I. Der BefundI. The Assessment

Sie schneiden ihm den Panzer auf, und er sieht dabei zu.

They are cutting his armour open, and he is watching.

Das ist der erste Umstand, den Joran Vashko an diesem Tag bemerkenswert findet: dass er zusieht. Ein Mensch, dem man den Brustpanzer aufschneidet, sieht weg. Ein Skitarii hat die Schmerzführung auf ein Viertel, seit er sie hat, und was von der linken Seite kommt, kommt als Meldung und nicht als Schmerz. Sektion vier, Integrität sechzehn Prozent, Fortsetzung nicht empfohlen. Und man kann einer Meldung zusehen.

That is the first circumstance Joran Vashko finds remarkable that day: that he is watching. A man whose breastplate is being cut open looks away. A Skitarii has had his pain routing at a quarter since he got it, and what comes from the left side comes as a report and not as pain. Section four, integrity sixteen per cent, continuation not advised. And one can watch a report.

The tech-priest above him is called Dorrek and has been working for fourteen hours. His smock sleeves are wet to the armpits.

"You can no longer move the hand. Are you aware of that?"

Joran sieht an sich hinunter. Die linke Hand liegt auf der Bahre, sechs Zentimeter neben seinem Bein, in einer Haltung, die er nicht gewählt hat. Er schickt den Befehl. Es passiert nichts. Er schickt ihn noch einmal, langsamer, so wie man ein Wort wiederholt, das der andere nicht verstanden hat.

Joran looks down at himself. The left hand lies on the litter, six centimetres beside his leg, in a posture he did not choose. He sends the command. Nothing happens. He sends it again, more slowly, the way one repeats a word the other person did not understand.

„Jetzt ist es mir bewusst."

"Now I am aware of it."

Dorrek nickt und schreibt.

Das Feld, in das er schreibt, ist Joran vertraut. Es ist dasselbe Feld, in das man auf Kel-Vantor alles schreibt, was ein Mensch nicht mehr kann: Befund. Vier Zeilen. Darunter zwei Kästchen, und die Kästchen sind der Grund, warum ein Skitarii, der auf einer Bahre liegt, nicht auf den Techpriester sieht, sondern auf dessen Hand.

The field he writes in is familiar to Joran. It is the same field into which everything is written on Kel-Vantor that a person can no longer do: Finding. Four lines. Beneath it two boxes, and the boxes are the reason a Skitarii lying on a litter does not look at the tech-priest but at his hand.

Er sieht nicht, welches Kästchen es wird. Dorrek hält das Brett falsch herum.

He does not see which box it becomes. Dorrek is holding the board the wrong way round.

Draußen räumen sie den Südwesten. Man hört es nicht, weil die Lazarettebene neun Ebenen unter der Oberfläche liegt, aber Joran hat den noosphärischen Rand noch offen, und über den Rand kommen weiter die Nachträge herein, in dem flachen, gleichmäßigen Ton, in dem die Zwölfte Kohorte seit sechs Tagen ihre Verluste meldet.

Outside they are clearing the south-west. One cannot hear it, because the infirmary level lies nine levels below the surface, but Joran still has the noospheric edge open, and over the edge the supplements keep coming in, in the flat, even tone in which the Twelfth Cohort has been reporting its losses for six days.

Ansek, Bo — nicht bergungsfähig. Drenn, Hala — nicht bergungsfähig. Vashko, Joran — geborgen, Lazarett drei.

Er hört seinen eigenen Namen in derselben Liste wie die anderen, und er stellt fest, dass ihm der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Vermerken kleiner vorkommt, als er sein sollte.

He hears his own name in the same list as the others, and he finds that the difference between the two entries seems smaller to him than it should be.

Vier Stunden später kommt der Alpha.

Four hours later the Alpha comes.

Marte Vend ist zweiundfünfzig und führt die Vorhut seit elf Jahren. Sie hat drei Finger, ein Auge und eine Stimme, die aus einem Gerät kommt, weil ihr eigener Kehlkopf 989 in einem Schacht geblieben ist. Sie setzt sich nicht.

Marte Vend is fifty-two and has led the vanguard for eleven years. She has three fingers, one eye and a voice that comes out of a device, because her own larynx stayed in a shaft in 989. She does not sit down.

„Bo und Hala", sagt Joran.

"Bo and Hala," says Joran.

„Ja."

"Yes."

„Und Brekk?"

"And Brekk?"

„Brekk steht", sagt Vend. „Brekk steht, Orsk steht, ich stehe. Von neunzehn."

"Brekk stands," says Vend. "Brekk stands, Orsk stands, I stand. Out of nineteen."

Sie sieht auf seine linke Hand. Sie sieht lange darauf.

She looks at his left hand. She looks at it for a long time.

„Vashko", sagt sie dann, „hast du den Befund gesehen?"

"Vashko," she then says, "have you seen the finding?"

„Nein."

"No."

„Ich schon."

"I have."

Und sie sagt es nicht so, wie man eine gute Nachricht anfängt, und auch nicht so, wie man eine schlechte anfängt. Sie sagt es so, wie ein Alpha etwas sagt, das sie in elf Jahren siebenmal gesagt hat.

And she does not say it the way one begins good news, and not the way one begins bad news either. She says it the way an Alpha says something she has said seven times in eleven years.

II. Erzbahnkopf VierII. Ore-Rail Head Four

Sechs Tage vorher steht die Vorhut der Zwölften Kohorte an einem Ort, an dem nichts passieren wird.

Six days earlier the vanguard of the Twelfth Cohort stands at a place where nothing will happen.

Das ist der Auftrag, und der Auftrag ist richtig. Die Astartes liegen im nördlichen Werkrand und lassen sich schlagen, damit die Masse nach Süden ins offene Feld läuft, wo die Titanen sie erwarten. Was die Zwölfte macht, ist die Rückseite: vier Erzbahnköpfe sichern, über die niemand kommen wird, weil niemand einen Grund hat, dorthin zu gehen.

That is the assignment, and the assignment is correct. The Astartes lie in the northern works margin and let themselves be beaten, so that the mass runs south into the open field where the Titans await it. What the Twelfth does is the reverse side: secure four ore-rail heads across which no one will come, because no one has a reason to go there.

Neunzehn Vorhut. Vier Köpfe. Fünf Tage Regen aus Schlackestaub.

Nineteen vanguard. Four heads. Five days of rain made of slag dust.

„Wir stehen an der Tür, durch die keiner geht", sagt Brekk am dritten Tag, „damit hinterher niemand sagen kann, dass die Tür offen war."

"We stand at the door nobody goes through," says Brekk on the third day, "so that afterwards nobody can say the door was open."

„Genau das", sagt Vend.

"Precisely that," says Vend.

Am sechsten Tag geht doch jemand durch.

On the sixth day someone does go through.

Es sind keine vierzigtausend. Es ist eine Splittergruppe von vielleicht dreihundert, die im Süden zwischen zwei Hallen durchgekommen ist, weil die Masse dort eine halbe Stunde lang so dicht stand, dass sie sich gegenseitig aus der Deckung geschoben hat, und die jetzt an der falschen Stelle ist und das nicht weiß.

It is not forty thousand. It is a splinter group of perhaps three hundred that got through in the south between two halls, because for half an hour the mass there stood so densely that it shoved itself out of cover, and which is now in the wrong place and does not know it.

Zwei Galvanikgewehre auf einen Gang von sechs Metern Breite, das ist die ganze Lage. Ein Galvanikgewehr tötet einen Ork bei jedem Treffer, und ein Ork braucht bei sechs Metern Breite dreieinhalb Sekunden für die Strecke, und drei von ihnen passen nebeneinander. Man rechnet das im Kopf, während man schießt. Man rechnet es die ganze Zeit.

Two galvanic rifles onto a passage six metres wide, that is the whole situation. A galvanic rifle kills an Ork with every hit, and an Ork needs three and a half seconds for the distance at six metres' width, and three of them fit side by side. One works that out in one's head while shooting. One works it out the whole time.

Bo Ansek fällt in der siebten Minute. Er hat noch neun Sekunden lang geschossen, nachdem ihm der linke Arm weg war, weil das Galvanikgewehr am Rücken verankert ist und nicht in der Hand liegt — es ist eine der Modifikationen, für die niemand dankbar ist, bis sie einmal zählt.

Bo Ansek falls in the seventh minute. He went on shooting for nine seconds after his left arm was gone, because the galvanic rifle is anchored at the back and does not lie in the hand — it is one of the modifications nobody is grateful for until it counts once.

Hala Drenn fällt in der elften. Sie fällt nicht durch einen Ork. Sie fällt, weil ein Ork mit brennendem Rücken in einen Bahnkasten läuft und der Bahnkasten einen Druckspeicher hat, den dort niemand vermutet hätte, weil ein Erzbahnkopf keinen haben sollte.

Hala Drenn falls in the eleventh. She does not fall to an Ork. She falls because an Ork with a burning back runs into a rail housing and the rail housing has a pressure reservoir that no one would have suspected there, because an ore-rail head should not have one.

Joran ist neun Meter weiter und dreht sich in die falsche Richtung.

Joran is nine metres further on and turns the wrong way.

He remembers the turning. He does not remember the impact. He remembers that shortly afterwards he lay on his back and that the report in his head was very polite: Section four. Integrity sixteen per cent.

And he remembers that he thought of his father while it happened, and not of anything particular, only that his father must also have lain on his back at some point.

Es steht in keinem Bericht. Das ist keine Klage; die Zwölfte Kohorte hat nichts gehalten, was für den Ausgang der Schlacht erheblich gewesen wäre, und die Erzbahnköpfe wären, wenn sie gefallen wären, in derselben Nacht zurückgenommen worden.

It stands in no report. That is not a complaint; the Twelfth Cohort held nothing that would have been material to the outcome of the battle, and the ore-rail heads, had they fallen, would have been retaken the same night.

Was in keinem Bericht steht, ist trotzdem geschehen, und siebzehn von neunzehn haben dafür bezahlt.

What stands in no report happened all the same, and seventeen of nineteen paid for it.

Joran Vashko denkt in den sieben Tagen danach oft daran, und er kommt jedes Mal zu demselben Ergebnis: Es hat sich gelohnt, und es steht nirgends, und beides gleichzeitig zu glauben ist die eigentliche Ausbildung, die ein Skitarii bekommt.

Joran Vashko thinks of it often in the seven days that follow, and every time he reaches the same result: it was worth it, and it stands nowhere, and to believe both at once is the actual training a Skitarii receives.

III. Was ein Skitarii istIII. What a Skitarius Is

Man muss verstehen, wie ein Skitarii entsteht, sonst hält man das Folgende für eine Grausamkeit, und es ist keine. Es ist ein Verfahren mit einer Lücke.

One has to understand how a Skitarii comes into being, or one takes what follows for a cruelty, and it is not one. It is a procedure with a gap.

Joran Vashko ist mit sechzehn zur Aushebung gegangen, freiwillig, wie fast alle auf Kel-Vantor, weil ein Skitarii Rationen der zweiten Stufe bekommt und weil sein Vater in der Verwaltung saß und ihm ohne ein Wort klargemacht hatte, dass er sich für den Schmelzdienst nicht eigne.

Joran Vashko went to the levy at sixteen, voluntarily, like almost everyone on Kel-Vantor, because a Skitarii gets second-grade rations and because his father sat in the administration and had made clear to him without a word that he was not suited to the smelting service.

Mit siebzehn bekam er das erste. Die Ausatmung — eine Filterkopplung an der Luftröhre, damit die Schmiedelunge ihn nicht kriegt wie seinen Vater. Er hat drei Tage danach zum ersten Mal seit seiner Kindheit tief eingeatmet und geweint, was ihm peinlich war und was der Adept ihm freundlich als üblich bezeichnete.

At seventeen he got the first. The exhalation — a filter coupling at the windpipe, so that the forge-lung would not take him as it had his father. Three days later he breathed deeply for the first time since his childhood and wept, which embarrassed him and which the adept kindly described as usual.

Mit neunzehn die Beine. Mit einundzwanzig die Schmerzführung. Mit vierundzwanzig die Augen, und mit den Augen die Noosphäre, was der eigentliche Einschnitt ist: Ab dann ist man nie mehr allein in seinem Kopf, sondern hört immer den flachen Ton, in dem die Kohorte über sich selbst Buch führt.

At nineteen the legs. At twenty-one the pain routing. At twenty-four the eyes, and with the eyes the noosphere, which is the actual break: from then on one is never alone in one's head again but always hears the flat tone in which the cohort keeps account of itself.

Mit siebenundzwanzig die rechte Hand, weil die alte in einer Sicherungsluke geblieben war.

At twenty-seven the right hand, because the old one had stayed in a security hatch.

Er ist jetzt einunddreißig. Er ist zu ungefähr zwei Fünfteln Gerät.

He is thirty-one now. He is roughly two fifths device.

Und keiner dieser Schritte hat ihm etwas genommen.

And not one of these steps has taken anything from him.

Das ist der Punkt, und die Priesterschaft betont ihn zu Recht: Die reguläre Modifikation ist graduell. Sie geht so langsam, dass der Mensch darin mitwächst. Man setzt nicht ein Gerät in einen Menschen, man setzt einen Menschen fort. Joran Vashko denkt in derselben Sprache wie mit sechzehn, er erinnert sich an dieselbe Kammer, er mag dieselbe Sorte Brei, und wenn er nachts an seinen Vater denkt, dann denkt er es mit demselben Ärger wie mit siebzehn.

That is the point, and the priesthood rightly stresses it: the regular modification is gradual. It goes so slowly that the human being grows along with it. One does not set a device into a man, one continues a man. Joran Vashko thinks in the same language as at sixteen, he remembers the same chamber, he likes the same sort of gruel, and when he thinks of his father at night, he thinks it with the same irritation as at seventeen.

Zwei Fünftel Gerät, und alles noch da.

Two fifths device, and everything still there.

Deshalb ist ein Skitarii nicht zu vergleichen mit einem Servitor, und deshalb sprechen Skitarii über Servitoren so, wie Menschen über Wetter sprechen: mit einer Selbstverständlichkeit, in der eine kleine, gut versteckte Vorsicht sitzt.

That is why a Skitarii cannot be compared to a servitor, and that is why Skitarii speak about servitors the way people speak about the weather: with a matter-of-factness in which a small, well-hidden caution sits.

Und deshalb bedeutet die vollständige Konvertierung etwas anderes, als sie zu bedeuten scheint.

And that is why full conversion means something other than what it appears to mean.

Sie ist nicht der nächste Schritt. Sie ist das Ende des Verfahrens und der Anfang eines zweiten, das mit dem ersten nichts zu tun hat: Ein schwerverwundeter Skitarii, dessen Instandsetzung teurer wäre als sein Ersatz, wird in eine Kataphronen-Einheit oder in einen Servitor überführt, ohne Rücksicht auf verbleibende Persönlichkeit oder kognitive Kapazität.

It is not the next step. It is the end of the procedure and the beginning of a second that has nothing to do with the first: a severely wounded Skitarii whose repair would cost more than his replacement is transferred into a Kataphron unit or into a servitor, without regard to remaining personality or cognitive capacity.

Ohne Rücksicht auf. Das steht so im Verfahren. Joran hat es zweimal gelesen, beide Male in Ausbildungsunterlagen, beide Male ohne hinzusehen, so wie man die Rückseite eines Formulars liest.

Without regard to. That is how it stands in the procedure. Joran has read it twice, both times in training documents, both times without looking, the way one reads the back of a form.

Er hat den Satz seit sechs Tagen im Kopf und er wird ihn nicht mehr los, und der Grund ist ein Wort, das dort nicht steht.

He has had the sentence in his head for six days and he cannot get rid of it, and the reason is a word that is not there.

Im ganzen Verfahren der vollständigen Konvertierung kommt keine Frist vor.

In the entire procedure of full conversion no term of reflection occurs.

IV. Die ListeIV. The Roll

„Ich stehe drauf", sagt er.

"I am on it," he says.

„Ja", sagt Vend.

"Yes," says Vend.

„Seit wann?"

"Since when?"

„Seit heute Morgen." Sie sieht auf ihre eigene Hand, die drei Finger hat. „Vashko, ich sage dir jetzt, wie es abläuft, weil dir das sonst keiner sagt und weil es besser ist, wenn du es von mir hörst als von einem Adepten."

"Since this morning." She looks at her own hand, which has three fingers. "Vashko, I am going to tell you now how it goes, because otherwise nobody will and because it is better that you hear it from me than from an adept."

Und dann sagt sie es, in vier Sätzen, ohne zu beschönigen:

And then she says it, in four sentences, without softening it:

Die Liste heißt Nachtragsliste und liegt bei der Materialverwaltung, nicht bei der Priesterschaft, weil eine Konvertierung verwaltungstechnisch eine Instandsetzung ist, die anders gebucht wird. Es steht kein Datum daneben. Es steht nie ein Datum daneben. Man wird geholt, wenn die Konvertierungshalle Kapazität hat, und die Halle hat Kapazität, wenn der Vorlauf abgearbeitet ist, und wie lang der Vorlauf ist, weiß die Materialverwaltung und sonst niemand.

The list is called the supplementary roll and lies with the materiel administration, not with the priesthood, because a conversion is administratively a repair and is booked differently. There is no date beside it. There is never a date beside it. One is fetched when the conversion hall has capacity, and the hall has capacity when the backlog is worked off, and how long the backlog is, the materiel administration knows and nobody else.

Nach der Zwölften Kohorte, nach sechs Tagen Südwestfeld, ist der Vorlauf lang.

After the Twelfth Cohort, after six days of the south-west field, the backlog is long.

„Wie lange", fragt Joran.

"How long," Joran asks.

„Bei Bekk waren es neun Tage. Bei Sarn zwei." Vend richtet sich auf. „Und bei einem, dessen Namen ich dir nicht sage, waren es vier Stunden, weil zufällig ein Tisch frei war."

"With Bekk it was nine days. With Sarn two." Vend straightens. "And with one whose name I will not tell you, it was four hours, because a table happened to be free."

Joran liegt sehr still.

Joran lies very still.

Was er in diesem Moment empfindet, ist nicht Angst, jedenfalls nicht die Sorte, für die er ausgebildet ist. Er hat auf dem Südwestfeld sechs Tage lang mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit gerechnet und dabei ordentlich gearbeitet; die Zwölfte Kohorte hat die Erzbahnköpfe gehalten, gegen einen Feind, der dort nie erschienen ist, und Joran weiß, dass in keinem Bericht stehen wird, dass sie das getan haben.

What he feels in that moment is not fear, at least not the sort he is trained for. On the south-west field he reckoned for six days with high probability and worked properly at it; the Twelfth Cohort held the ore-rail heads against an enemy who never appeared there, and Joran knows that no report will state that they did.

Es ist etwas anderes. Es ist der Umstand, dass er nicht weiß, wann.

It is something else. It is the circumstance that he does not know when.

Ein Mann, der weiß, dass er in sieben Tagen aufhört, hat sieben Tage. Ein Mann, der nicht weiß, ob es neun Tage sind oder vier Stunden, hat gar nichts. Er hat nur eine Tür, die jederzeit aufgehen kann, und einen Kopf, der ab jetzt nichts anderes mehr tut, als auf die Tür zu sehen.

A man who knows he stops in seven days has seven days. A man who does not know whether it is nine days or four hours has nothing. He has only a door that can open at any moment, and a head that from now on does nothing but watch the door.

„Kann man Einspruch einlegen?"

"Can one appeal?"

„Nein."

"No."

„Kann man einen Antrag stellen?"

"Can one submit an application?"

Marte Vend schweigt eine Weile. Ihr Gerät gibt dabei ein leises, gleichmäßiges Geräusch von sich, das Skitarii, die lange zusammen dienen, an einer Kameradin genauso kennen wie ihr Gesicht.

Marte Vend is silent for a while. Her device makes a quiet, even sound while she does, one that Skitarii who serve together for a long time know in a comrade as well as they know her face.

„Ja", sagt sie schließlich. „Man kann einen Antrag stellen. Aber nicht gegen die Konvertierung."

"Yes," she says at last. "One can submit an application. But not against the conversion."

V. Der UnterschiedV. The Difference

Der Adept der Aussonderungsverwaltung kommt am zweiten Tag nach dem Befund, weil er kommen muss; es steht in seinem Amt, dass er jeden Fall persönlich unterrichtet, in dem beide Wege offenstehen.

The adept of the Severance Administration comes on the second day after the finding, because he has to come; it stands in his office that he must inform personally in every case in which both ways are open.

Corvin Aeth ist Anfang dreißig, hat einen sehr geraden Rücken und blinzelt beim Zuhören nicht. Er trägt zwei Mappen. Er legt sie nebeneinander auf den Hocker neben der Bahre, was Joran später als das Ehrlichste an dem ganzen Gespräch in Erinnerung behält: dass sie nebeneinander lagen und nicht übereinander.

Corvin Aeth is in his early thirties, has a very straight back and does not blink while listening. He carries two folders. He lays them side by side on the stool beside the litter, which Joran later remembers as the most honest thing about the whole conversation: that they lay side by side and not one on top of the other.

„Vorhut Vashko. Ich habe Ihnen drei Sachen zu erklären und keine davon ist ein Angebot."

"Vanguard Vashko. I have three things to explain to you and none of them is an offer."

„Ich höre."

"I am listening."

„Erstens. Sie stehen auf der Nachtragsliste der Materialverwaltung. Das ist kein Urteil und keine Strafe; es ist eine Kostenrechnung. Ihre Instandsetzung ist mit vierhundertzwanzig Einheiten veranschlagt, Ihr Ersatz mit einhundertsiebzig. Ich sage Ihnen diese Zahlen, weil man sie Ihnen sonst vorenthält und weil ich es für falsch halte, einem Menschen die Zahl vorzuenthalten, die über ihn entscheidet."

"First. You stand on the supplementary roll of the materiel administration. That is not a sentence and not a punishment; it is a costing. Your repair is estimated at four hundred and twenty units, your replacement at one hundred and seventy. I tell you these figures because otherwise they are withheld from you and because I hold it wrong to withhold from a man the number that decides about him."

Joran sagt nichts.

Joran says nothing.

"Second. On this roll there is no term. You will not be notified. Two bearers come, and then it is the day."

Es gibt auf diesem Mond drei Wege, auf denen ein Mensch aufhört, ein Mensch zu sein, und Sie kennen sie alle. Der Schweigeschnitt trifft die Kontaminierten und hat vier Tage Bedenkzeit. Die vollständige Konvertierung trifft die, deren Instandsetzung sich nicht rechnet, und hat keine. Und der Letzte Dienst trifft niemanden."

"I know that you know it. I must say it all the same." Aeth lays his hand on the left folder. "Third. There are three ways on this moon by which a person stops being a person, and you know all of them. The silence-cut falls on the contaminated and has four days of reflection. The conversion hall lies elsewhere and has nothing at all. But what lies on the table at the end in all three is the same, and what walks the passages afterwards is the same.

He spoke little altogether; as a child Joran thought that was severity, and has known for some years that it was shortness of breath.

In those nine months he thought of his father three times, each time briefly, each time with irritation.

He walked the administration for four days then. Level nine, level twelve, the cohort record office, twice the Smelting Cathedral. He was twenty-three, he wore armour, and for four days he spoke with people who kindly explained to him that they were not permitted to explain anything to him.

On the fifth day he stopped.

And then the adept says the sentence for which Joran will seek him out two days later.

"To be notified. Two lines at the foot of the sheet. The petitioner may name a person to whom notification is made after execution." Aeth does not open the folder; he knows it by heart, which taken by itself is a piece of information. "He entered you. Complete, with service designation. And he did not strike it out."

Am vierten Tag kommt ein Astartes ins Lazarett drei, und die Ebene wird sehr still.

On the fourth day an Astartes comes into infirmary three, and the level goes very quiet.

He is armoured, because he comes straight from the ramp, and he has to stoop under the doorway, and a tech-priest who happens to be in his path walks backwards without noticing it. On his shoulder sits the mark of the Iron Veins, and his right arm is not there.

"Vanguard Joran Vashko."

„Herr."

"Lord."

„Bruder-Techmarine Kael'dun." Depth profiles, rock classes, cap thicknesses, clean, ordered.

And Brother-Techmarine Kael'dun, who left his right arm on the Great Ramp and who is not yet finished with his confessing, says the cruellest and most decent thing anyone says to Joran Vashko in those seven days.

"Something was there. I do not know what."

"He cleared the shaft. He let Amsel —"

„Vashko." Kael'dun beugt sich vor. „Hören Sie mir zu, denn ich werde das nicht zweimal sagen. In dieser Einheit lagen zwei Menschen. Der eine hat den Bogen gesehen, weil er darunter stand. Der andere hat den Stempel gesetzt, der den anderen hineingelassen hat. Beide könnten dieses Bild tragen. Ich weiß nicht, welcher es war. "Vashko." Kael'dun leans forward. "Listen to me, for I will not say this twice. In that unit lay two people. One saw the arch, because he stood beneath it. The other set the stamp that let the first one in. Both could carry that image. I do not know which it was. I could tell you, and it would be kind, and it would be invented."

He does not submit it because the Astartes consoled him. He is not consoled. What Kael'dun brought him is the worst news of his life, and he spent the night bringing it into the only form in which it can be borne:

IX. Tag zweiIX. Day Two

Am zweiten Tag lässt er sich in die Schmelzkathedrale bringen.

On the second day he has himself taken to the Smelting Cathedral.

Er kann gehen. Das Bein ist unversehrt, und ein Skitarii, dem die halbe linke Seite fehlt, geht immer noch besser als ein gesunder Werker; das ist der Teil der Modifikation, den niemand romantisch findet und der jeden Tag zählt. He can walk. The leg is undamaged, and a Skitarii missing half his left side still walks better than a healthy worker; that is the part of the modification nobody finds romantic and which counts every day. A bearer accompanies him, because it is regulation. The bearer is nineteen and does not talk.

It is the only place on Kel-Vantor where the moon looks the way a stranger imagines it: a black wedge out of the ground, hollow within, six hundred metres high, and in the middle the heat hangs like a second body. Joran was here twice as a child, because his father held it to be educational, and he remembers nothing but his father's hand at his collar, pulling him away from the railing.

A Skitarii with fourth-grade eyes can resolve a movement signature at sixty metres, and Joran has known for six years which position his father held, and in six years has looked exactly once and not again afterwards, and the reason for that was not cowardice but a very precise notion of what the looking does to a man.

On the way back the nineteen-year-old bearer asks something for the first time.

Joran überlegt, ob er lügt.

Joran considers whether to lie.

„Mein Vater", sagt er.

"My father," he says.

Der Junge nickt und redet den ganzen Rückweg nicht mehr, und an der Schleuse zu Lazarett drei sagt er: „Meiner ist auf Bahn zwei", und geht.

X. Tag dreiX. Day Three

Am dritten Tag kommt die Vorhut.

On the third day the vanguard comes.

Brekk has a dressing on his head and will keep it, because dressings are seldom changed on Skitarii. Orsk has nothing at all and therefore looks like a coward, which he is not; the south-west field chose without asking.

„Wir haben gehört, du hast unterschrieben", sagt Vend.

"We heard you signed," says Vend.

„Ja."

"Yes."

„Warum."

"Why."

Joran hat auf diese Frage vier Antworten vorbereitet und keine davon ist es.

Joran has prepared four answers to that question and none of them is it.

„Weil ich wissen wollte, wann."

"Because I wanted to know when."

Vend nickt langsam. Ihr Gerät gibt das leise, gleichmäßige Geräusch von sich.

Vend nods slowly. Her device makes its quiet, even sound.

Und dann tut die Vorhut der Zwölften Kohorte etwas, wofür es keine Vorschrift gibt und das in keinem Bericht steht.

And then the vanguard of the Twelfth Cohort does something for which there is no regulation and which stands in no report.

They stay.

Nicht lange — sie haben Dienst, die Kohorte steht bei sechs von neunzehn und muss trotzdem die Erzbahnköpfe sichern. Sie bleiben zweiundvierzig Minuten. Sie reden nicht über den Antrag. Brekk erzählt eine sehr lange, sehr langweilige Geschichte über einen Kompressor. Orsk isst Joran den halben Nährbrei weg, weil Orsk das seit elf Jahren tut. Vend sitzt daneben und sagt fast nichts.

Not long — they are on duty, the cohort stands at six of nineteen and must secure the ore-rail heads all the same. They stay forty-two minutes. They do not talk about the application. Brekk tells a very long, very boring story about a compressor. Orsk eats half of Joran's nutrient paste, because Orsk has been doing that for eleven years. Vend sits beside them and says almost nothing.

XI. Der VerlustabgleichXI. The Reconciliation of Losses

Am dritten Tag bringt ihm ein Adept der Materialverwaltung ein Formular ans Bett.

On the third day an adept of the materiel administration brings him a form at his bedside.

Das ist nicht Bosheit und nicht einmal Gedankenlosigkeit. Es ist Zuständigkeit: Joran Vashko ist der nächste eingetragene Angehörige der Person, die dem Körper zugrunde lag, der unter der Designation 0839 geführt wurde, und ein Verlustabgleich braucht eine Erklärung des nächsten Angehörigen, wenn ein Körper ohne beigebrachte Belege ausfällt.

That is not malice and not even thoughtlessness. It is jurisdiction: Joran Vashko is the next registered relative of the person underlying the body that was carried under the designation 0839, and a reconciliation of losses needs a statement from the next of kin when a body fails without documents produced.

Ein Bruder-Techmarine der Eisenadern hat ihm gestern zehn Minuten lang die Umstände erklärt: eine Einspeisung in das Manifold eines Warlord-Titanen, vierzig Minuten Übernahme, sieben Schachtkappen unter der Großen Rampe, zweiundzwanzig Schächte, die im Kataster der Zwölften Kohorte nicht stehen.

He could fill it. A Brother-Techmarine of the Iron Veins explained the circumstances to him for ten minutes yesterday: a feed into the manifold of a Warlord Titan, forty minutes of assumption, seven shaft caps beneath the Great Ramp, twenty-two shafts that do not stand in the cadastre of the Twelfth Cohort.

He says: "Not known."

"A failure without documents cannot be booked as a loss," says the adept. "It stays open."

"The allocation runs on. Ration entitlement lapses for servitors, but maintenance shifts, spare-part quota and shift planning stay open until the process is closed." He gathers his sheets. "In practice it means that the Smelting Cathedral goes on scheduling a maintenance shift every four months for a unit that no longer exists."

„Wie lange?"

"For how long?"

XII. Tag vierXII. Day Four

Am vierten Tag will er zurück.

On the fourth day he wants to withdraw.

Es kommt ohne Anlass. Er liegt seit zwei Stunden wach, es ist die dritte Schicht, auf der Ebene ist es still bis auf die Umluft, und irgendwann stellt er fest, dass er die Tage falsch herum zählt. Er hat bis zum vierten Tag gezählt, was man tut, wenn man Zeit hat. Ab jetzt zählt er von sieben abwärts, was man tut, wenn man keine mehr hat.

It comes without occasion. He has lain awake for two hours, it is the third shift, on the level it is quiet but for the air circulation, and at some point he notices that he is counting the days the wrong way round. He has counted up to the fourth day, which one does when one has time. From now on he counts down from seven, which one does when one has none left.

You would have stood on it for nine days."

Joran liegt sehr still.

It is not a threat, barely a warning. It is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is built such that for a man in Joran Vashko's position there is no way back that gains him time — the way back takes from him the only time he has, and gives him in exchange a door that can open at any moment.

„Ich habe eine Frage", sagt Joran am fünften Tag. „Und ich weiß, dass Sie sie nicht beantworten müssen."

"I have a question," says Joran on the fifth day. "And I know you do not have to answer it."

„Fragen Sie."

"Ask."

„Führen Sie eine Liste?"

"Do you keep a list?"

Corvin Aeth sieht ihn an. Es dauert lange.

Corvin Aeth looks at him. It takes a long time.

"Yes."

"Every case of the Hall of Last Duty gets a second mark from me. There are three." He says it as though reading it off, which he is not doing. "The first means the petitioner came of his own accord and did not waver. The second means he wavered and came anyway. The third means that someone spoke with him."

Sometimes a foreman who needed a place. Sometimes a son. And one single time a procedure that charged the petitioner for the way back, without anyone having wanted it so."

"Yes."

"How many of those were Skitarii?"

XIV. Tag sechsXIV. Day Six

Der Rückstand liegt bei achtundvierzigtausend Einträgen.

The backlog stands at forty-eight thousand entries.

Ein Skitarii im Feld empfängt über die Noosphäre alles, was die Kohorte über sich selbst weiß, und der überwiegende Teil davon ist Schrott: Bestandsmeldungen, Wartungsintervalle, Rationszuteilungen, Verlegungen. Damit ein Kämpfender davon nicht taub wird, filtert die Ausrüstung nach Belangklassen. Klasse eins bis vier gehen durch. Fünf bis neun gehen in einen Rückstand, der nie gelesen wird, weil ihn niemand lesen kann.

A Skitarii in the field receives over the noosphere everything the cohort knows about itself, and the greater part of it is refuse: stock reports, maintenance intervals, ration allocations, redeployments. So that a fighting man does not go deaf from it, the equipment filters by relevance class. Classes one to four go through. Five to nine go into a backlog that is never read, because nobody can read it.

He is not angry at the administration. He has lived thirty-one years on this moon and knows that it is not malice: the notification was created, dispatched, delivered and archived, every step correct, and the only error in the whole chain is that a father did not know his son does not read class seven, and that there is no office that could have told him.

In the afternoon he has the sheet brought.

XV. Die NachtXV. The Night

He does not sleep.

That is not fear. It is a Skitarii circumstance: the pain routing works differently at night, and the left side has been reporting the same thing every four minutes for six days, and one can ignore a report, but one cannot ignore that one is ignoring it.

Also liegt er wach und macht das Einzige, was ihm einfällt: eine Aufstellung.

So he lies awake and does the only thing that occurs to him: an inventory.

The legs are not his. The hip is half his. The right hand is not his, the left is his and does nothing. The ribcage is his, with the exception of section four. The windpipe has a coupling. The eyes are not his. The skull is his. What is inside it, nobody knows exactly, and that is the point at which every inventory of this kind stops being an inventory.

That night he notices that the number says nothing, because it measures the wrong quantity. It counts what was replaced. It does not count what never stood in any register.

What he finds is this: he is nine years old and standing with his father on a catwalk above the charging line, because his father holds it to be educational. It is hot and loud. He stands at the railing and looks down, and at some point his father reaches from behind into his collar and pulls him two steps back, without a word, without explanation, and leaves the hand lying there afterwards for about five seconds.

He is not summoned, he has no orders, and to the question why he is there he can give no answer; he announces twice that he is about to go again, and then stays sitting on the stool until 05:40. In those two and a half hours they talk about compressors, because Brekk raised the subject three days earlier and because it is the only one on offer.

The Hall of Last Duty is smaller than he had thought.

Er hat sie sich wie eine Kammer vorgestellt und sie ist ein Saal, aber ein niedriger, mit einer Decke aus schwarzem Stein, in der die Ewige Flamme sich spiegelt, so dass man sie zweimal sieht. Es riecht nach heißem Metall und nach dem Öl, mit dem man Kerzen nicht ölt und Geräte schon.

He had imagined it as a chamber and it is a hall, but a low one, with a ceiling of black stone in which the Eternal Flame is reflected, so that one sees it twice. It smells of hot metal and of the oil with which one does not oil candles and does oil devices.

Es gibt vier Sitzbänke. Es gibt keine Kapuzen.

There are four benches. There are no hoods.

Zwei Ebenen tiefer liegt die Aussonderungshalle Neun, und dort gibt es Kapuzen und keine Bänke, und Joran Vashko denkt in dem Moment, in dem er hereingeführt wird, zum ersten und einzigen Mal, dass diese zwei Ebenen vielleicht doch etwas sind.

Two levels lower lies Severance Hall Nine, and there are hoods there and no benches, and Joran Vashko thinks in the moment he is led in, for the first and only time, that these two levels are perhaps something after all.

Man führt ihn nicht. Das ist eine der Bestimmungen, und sie ist die einzige, an der man merkt, dass sich jemand etwas dabei gedacht hat: Ein Petent des Letzten Dienstes geht auf eigenen Beinen hinein, solange er es kann. In Halle Neun wird geführt.

He is not led. That is one of the provisions, and it is the only one in which one notices that somebody gave it thought: a petitioner of the Last Service walks in on his own legs as long as he can. In Hall Nine one is led.

Joran Vashko kann. Er geht die elf Meter selbst und braucht dafür lange, weil die linke Seite bei jedem Schritt einen Bruchteil hinterherkommt, und niemand hilft ihm, und das ist die Höflichkeit.

Joran Vashko can. He walks the eleven metres himself and takes a long time over it, because the left side lags a fraction behind at every step, and nobody helps him, and that is the courtesy.

Auf den Bänken sitzen vier.

Four sit on the benches.

Marte Vend, Brekk und Orsk, in Panzern, die man nicht gereinigt hat, weil die Kohorte seit acht Tagen nicht aus dem Dienst gekommen ist. Und ganz hinten, allein auf der vierten Bank, der neunzehnjährige Träger, dessen Namen Joran nicht kennt und dessen Vater auf Bahn zwei steht.

Marte Vend, Brekk and Orsk, in armour that has not been cleaned, because the cohort has not been off duty for eight days. And right at the back, alone on the fourth bench, the nineteen-year-old bearer whose name Joran does not know and whose father stands on track two.

Kein Astartes. Er hat auch keinen erwartet; ein Techmarine der Eisenadern hat auf einem Forge-Mond, unter dem zweiundzwanzig Schächte verschlossen werden müssen, anderes zu tun, und Joran ist ihm für zehn Minuten Wahrheit im Lazarett dankbarer, als er es für zwei Stunden auf einer Bank wäre.

No Astartes. He did not expect one either; a Techmarine of the Iron Veins has other things to do on a forge moon beneath which twenty-two shafts must be sealed, and Joran is more grateful to him for ten minutes of truth in the infirmary than he would be for two hours on a bench.

He did not arrange with Vend that they should come. He told her the day before in the equipment passage that it would be on the seventh day, and she nodded and walked on, because the vanguard had to mount up in four minutes.

Brekk weint nicht und Orsk isst nichts, und beide tun etwas, das ihnen sichtbar schwerfällt: Sie sehen hin.

Brekk does not weep and Orsk eats nothing, and both do something that visibly comes hard to them: they look.

Das Ankleiden dauert zwanzig Minuten und wird von zwei Adepten vollzogen, die nicht sprechen.

The dressing takes twenty minutes and is performed by two adepts who do not speak.

Es besteht darin, dass man ihm die Panzerung abnimmt, Stück für Stück, in der Reihenfolge, in der man sie ihm über vierzehn Jahre gegeben hat. It consists in their taking the armour off him, piece by piece, in the order in which it was given to him over fourteen years. That is not meant symbolically; it is necessary, because what comes beneath connects at other points. But it coincides, and nobody in this hall has ever claimed that this is a coincidence.

At the filter coupling on the windpipe the younger adept pauses briefly.

"The first," says Joran.

The adept nods and goes on, and afterwards Joran breathes the air of this moon for the first time in fourteen years as it is, and it tastes of hot metal and of oil, and he coughs, and the cough is his father's cough.

At twenty past four Corvin Aeth presents the sheet a second time.

Unit 0839 no longer exists. It failed eleven days ago in the head of a Warlord Titan, cleanly, without twitching, and somewhere in the materiel administration there lies an unclosed reconciliation of losses for it, lacking documents and always lacking them.

Corvin Aeth spricht die Litanei nicht. Corvin Aeth does not speak the litany. A priest does that, an old man with a speech device who comes from another level and who has never seen Joran Vashko and never will again, and that is as it should be: a rite spoken by one who knows you would be a farewell, and a farewell is something the administration is not entitled to.

Aeth stands to the side. His office is the paper.

In the last of them Joran Vashko hears the flat, even tone in which the Twelfth Cohort keeps account of itself, and he still hears his own name appear in it, in the same list as on the day they cut his armour open — and he finds that this time the difference between the entries seems large enough to him.

XVII. Das vierte ZeichenXVII. The Fourth Mark

Corvin Aeth schließt den Vorgang am selben Abend ab. Es dauert neun Minuten, wie immer.

Corvin Aeth closes the case that same evening. It takes nine minutes, as always.

Danach nimmt er das Heft heraus, das amtlich nicht existiert, und schlägt es bei der laufenden Zeile auf.

Afterwards he takes out the notebook that officially does not exist and opens it at the current line.

Vierhundertsechzig.

Four hundred and sixty.

Er setzt das zweite Zeichen. Gewankt und trotzdem gekommen — es stimmt, es ist um 02:40 geschehen, es hat niemand gesehen außer ihm, und er hat es nicht in die Akte geschrieben.

He sets the second mark. Wavered and came anyway — it is correct, it happened at 02:40, nobody saw it but him, and he did not write it in the file.

Then he sits for a while.

He does not yet know that evening what it will mean. He knows only what he set it for: for a case in which the way back was dearer than the way forward, and not because anyone wanted it so, but because two houses sort by different rules.

Wenn es dafür ein Zeichen gibt, kann man es zählen.

If there is a mark for that, one can count it.

Und wenn man es lange genug zählt, hat man irgendwann eine Zahl, und eine Zahl ist das Einzige auf diesem Mond, dem jemand zuhört.

And if one counts it long enough, one has a number at some point, and a number is the only thing on this moon that anyone listens to.
