The boy on my table is called Ilm and in four hours will no longer have a name he chose himself.

It has a practical reason and a second one that we no longer speak aloud, since we are what we are: that a son of Vulkan is made in fire and not in a sterile chamber.

He is fourteen and comes from the ash fields of Kethris, where we have taken for a hundred and twenty years, because there nobody counts any longer how many children a place has. He has the chest of a child who has carried heavy things, and hands on which the forefinger of the left is shorter than that of the right. That is why I took him. Not in spite of it: because of it. A child who loses a finger at nine and is still hauling stone at fourteen has something I cannot implant.

Nesk passes me the Narthecium without my reaching for it. He has done it that way for sixty years: he does not lay the tool in my hand, but two fingers' breadth beside it on the cloth. He has it from the serf who broke him in, and that one had it from his, and somewhere at the beginning of this line stands an Apothecary who once burned his hand when something hot was laid into it. Nobody knows the man any more. Nesk still lays it beside.

If he does not take it, one sees that too, and then I do not need the other eighteen steps.

Ossmodula und Biscopea zusammen, in einem Gang, weil sie sich gegenseitig brauchen: das eine baut den Knochen um, das andere den Muskel, und wer sie einzeln setzt, bekommt einen Jungen, dessen Sehnen an Knochen ziehen, die noch nicht wissen, dass sie sich verändern sollen.

Now comes the long work. Ossmodula and Biscopea together, in one pass, because they need each other: the one rebuilds the bone, the other the muscle, and whoever sets them separately gets a boy whose tendons pull on bones that do not yet know they are supposed to change.

Zwei Stunden. Ich rede in diesen zwei Stunden nicht, und Nesk redet nie.

Two hours. In those two hours I do not talk, and Nesk never talks.

Larraman's Organ is the step at which I become slow, because it is the step after which a mistake no longer bleeds.

Vor drei Tagen kam Bruder Sef'ran in die Apothecarion.

Three days ago Brother Sef'ran came into the Apothecarion.

Der Kataleptische Knoten sitzt im Hinterhirn und sorgt dafür, dass ein Astartes den Schlaf abschalten kann. Es ist der Schritt, bei dem ich am wenigsten Nutzen von meiner Erfahrung habe, weil Hirngewebe nicht verhandelt.

The Catalepsean Node sits in the hindbrain and sees to it that an Astartes can switch off sleep. It is the step at which I have the least use for my experience, because brain tissue does not negotiate.

That is normal. It is so with all of us, and we know exactly why: the Catalepsean Node I have just set in Ilm interferes with sleep, and what is laid down in the four hours before it is not properly stored in the first weeks after. We lose the night in which we are made. All of us.

Der Preomnor ist ein zweiter Magen, der Gift abfängt. Die Omophagea sitzt im Rückenmark und lässt einen Astartes aus dem Fleisch eines Toten dessen Erinnerung ziehen.

The Preomnor is a second stomach that catches poison. The Omophagea sits in the spinal cord and lets an Astartes draw the memory of a dead man out of his flesh.

Ich setze die Omophagea seit dreihundert Jahren mit derselben Sorgfalt und mit derselben Abneigung. Nicht aus Zartheit. Ich habe sie zweimal benutzt und beide Male bekommen, was ich wollte, und beide Male das dazu, was ich nicht wollte, und niemand hat mich vorher gewarnt, weil es niemanden gibt, der einen davor warnt.

I have set the Omophagea for three hundred years with the same care and the same distaste. Not out of delicacy. I have used it twice and both times got what I wanted and both times what I did not want along with it, and nobody warned me beforehand, because there is nobody who warns one of that.

"You wanted to know whether I stop you, Apothecary, otherwise you would not have come here, but gone to the book chamber." He picked the breech up again. "I do not stop you. But I will tell you why there is nobody who knows it, and then you can decide for yourself whether you take that for permission."

He went on oiling.

The other two die because a fourteen-year-old is awake for four hours while he is taken apart, and because something in those four hours either carries him or does not."

The Multi-lung needs room, and room has to be taken. That is the step at which I open the boy's ribs a second time, and it is the step at which, if they die, they mostly die.

In der Bücherkammer der Kalten Esse stehen einundzwanzig Abschriften des Buches der Einschmelzung.

In the book chamber of the Cold Forge stand twenty-one copies of the Book of the Smelting-In.

Das ist kein Zufall und keine Sammelleidenschaft. Ein Apothecarius fertigt in seinem Dienst mindestens eine Abschrift an, von Hand, ohne Vorlage außer der vorigen Abschrift, und die alte wird nicht vernichtet. Der Grund ist derselbe wie bei allem anderen in diesem Ritus: Wenn eine Abschrift verdirbt, sollen zwanzig übrig sein, und wenn eine Abschrift von der vorigen abweicht, soll man es sehen können.

That is no accident and no collector's passion. An Apothecary makes at least one copy in his service, by hand, without any exemplar but the previous copy, and the old one is not destroyed. The reason is the same as with everything else in this rite: if one copy spoils, twenty are to remain, and if one copy departs from the previous one, it is to be possible to see it.

It is not for the book. The book is there twenty-one times over.

Der Okkulolob sitzt hinter den Augen und stellt sie um. Es ist ein feiner Eingriff, und ich habe ihn immer gemocht, weil er der einzige ist, nach dem ein Kandidat mich zum ersten Mal so ansieht, wie er mich den Rest seines Lebens ansehen wird.

The Occulobe sits behind the eyes and adjusts them. It is a fine intervention, and I have always liked it, because it is the only one after which a candidate looks at me for the first time the way he will look at me for the rest of his life.

Ilm sieht mich an.

Ilm looks at me.

Achtzehn Schritte.

Eighteen steps.

IX. Achter Guss — das Lymanische OhrIX. Eighth Pour — Lyman’s Ear

Das Lymanische Ohr ist der Schritt, bei dem ich sie warnen muss, und es ist der einzige, bei dem die Warnung etwas nützt: Die Welt wird gleich sehr laut, und wenn du in den nächsten Minuten glaubst, dass jemand neben dir spricht, dann ist das jemand, der zwei Decks tiefer spricht.

Lyman's Ear is the step at which I have to warn them, and it is the only one at which the warning is any use: the world is about to become very loud, and if in the next few minutes you believe that somebody is speaking beside you, then that is somebody speaking two decks below.

Ilm hört, wie das Feuer im Becken atmet, und erschrickt darüber, und ich lege ihm die Hand auf die Stirn, bis es aufhört.

Ilm hears how the fire in the basin breathes, and is frightened by it, and I lay my hand on his forehead until it stops.

Er rechnet. Das dauert bei ihm länger als sonst, und ich lasse ihm die Zeit, weil das Rechnen die einzige Beschäftigung ist, die ich ihm anbieten kann.

He reckons. That takes him longer than usual, and I give him the time, because reckoning is the only occupation I can offer him.

„Dann bin ich über der Hälfte."

"Then I am over half."

„Du bist seit dem sechsten über der Hälfte. Es ist nicht gleich verteilt."

"You have been over half since the sixth. It is not evenly divided."

„Was ist der schlimmste?"

"Which is the worst?"

Ich hätte lügen können. Man lügt an dieser Stelle üblicherweise, weil der schlimmste noch kommt und weil ein Kandidat, der ihn erwartet, ihn schlechter übersteht.

I could have lied. One usually lies at this point, because the worst is still to come and because a candidate who expects it comes through it worse.

„Der sechzehnte."

"The sixteenth."

„Warum?"

"Why?"

„Weil du bei den ersten fünfzehn glaubst, dass es aufhört", sage ich. „Beim sechzehnten hörst du damit auf."

"Because with the first fifteen you believe that it stops," I say. "With the sixteenth you stop believing that."

Ilm liegt eine Weile still. Das Feuer im Becken macht ein Geräusch, das er heute zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben hört und das ich nicht mehr höre.

Ilm lies still for a while. The fire in the basin makes a sound that he is hearing today for the first time in his life and that I no longer hear.

Vierhundertsiebenundzwanzig Kandidaten. Ich habe die Frage nie bekommen, und ich habe drei Tage vorher dieselbe Frage von einem Neunundzwanzigjährigen bekommen, und beide Male stand ich mit den Händen in jemandem und hatte keine Antwort.

Four hundred and twenty-seven candidates. I have never been asked the question, and three days earlier I was asked the same question by a twenty-nine-year-old, and both times I stood with my hands inside somebody and had no answer.

„Ein Wort", sage ich.

"A word," I say.

„Was für eins?"

"What sort of one?"

„Das erfährst du, wenn du es hörst."

"You will find that out when you hear it."

Er gibt sich damit zufrieden. Sie geben sich immer damit zufrieden, und das ist der Grund, warum in sechshundert Jahren niemand gefragt hat: Man fragt nicht nach dem Ende, solange man noch acht Schritte davor liegt, und danach erinnert man sich nicht.

He is satisfied with that. They are always satisfied with that, and that is the reason nobody has asked in six hundred years: one does not ask about the end while one is still eight steps short of it, and afterwards one does not remember.

Neben Merr'oths Hinzufügung steht eine Randnotiz.

Beside Merr'oth's addition stands a marginal note.

Sie ist vier Wörter lang und in derselben engen Schrift geschrieben, und ich habe sie in dreihundert Jahren nie gelesen, weil ich Band zehn nie geöffnet habe, und weil in meiner eigenen Abschrift keine Randnotiz steht.

It is four words long and written in the same narrow hand, and I have never read it in three hundred years, because I never opened volume ten, and because in my own copy there stands no marginal note.

That is the point at which I have to stop for a moment, even now, with my hands in the ear of a child.

Die neun Apothecarii nach Merr'oth haben den Schritt abgeschrieben und die Randnotiz weggelassen.

The nine Apothecaries after Merr'oth copied out the step and left out the marginal note.

Sie haben nichts falsch gemacht. Eine Randnotiz ist kein Bestandteil des Ritus. Man schreibt den Ritus ab, nicht die Arbeitsvermerke dessen, der ihn abgeschrieben hat. Ich hätte es genauso gemacht. Ich habe es genauso gemacht, dreihundert Jahre lang, an einem Buch, dessen Randnotizen ich nie gesehen habe.

They did nothing wrong. A marginal note is no part of the rite. One copies out the rite, not the working notes of the man who copied it out. I would have done exactly the same. I have done exactly the same, for three hundred years, with a book whose marginal notes I have never seen.

So verschwindet etwas. Nicht durch Verschweigen. Durch Sorgfalt.

That is how something disappears. Not through concealment. Through care.

Merr'oth war Apothecarius. Er hat getan, was ein Apothecarius tut, wenn er etwas übernimmt, dessen Ursprung er nicht selbst bezeugen kann: Er hat die Fundstelle angegeben.

Merr'oth was an Apothecary. He did what an Apothecary does when he takes over something whose origin he cannot himself attest: he gave the source.

Das Zugangsbuch führt jede Aufnahme von Gensaat in unseren Bestand. Herkunft, Datum, Zustand, Zahl der Zylinder, Name des Übergebenden. Es ist das einzige Buch an Bord, das älter ist als der Orden selbst, weil wir es aus dem Festungskloster mitgenommen haben, als wir es verließen, und weil es das einzige war, worüber es damals keine Diskussion gab.

The intake book carries every reception of gene-seed into our stock. Origin, date, condition, number of cylinders, name of the deliverer. It is the only book aboard that is older than the Chapter itself, because we took it with us from the fortress-monastery when we left it, and because it was the one thing about which there was no discussion at the time.

I instead shut the Book of the Smelting-In, laid it back in the case, pushed the case into the bottom shelf and went into the Apothecarion and made the preparations for Ilm, although there were still two days until the Smelting-In.

I cleaned the basin that afternoon, sorted the clamps, stripped the table, opened the cold chamber and took out the cylinder from which Ilm's progenoid glands come, and checked it, and afterwards laid it back in and took it out again and checked it once more.

Nesk hat mir dabei zugesehen und nichts getan, was er sonst immer tut.

Nesk watched me doing it and did nothing that he otherwise always does.

Am Abend bin ich in die Bücherkammer zurückgegangen und habe das Zugangsbuch aufgeschlagen, und dann habe ich zweihundert Seiten weit zurückgeblättert, bis zum Jahr 347.

In the evening I went back to the book chamber and opened the intake book, and then I turned back two hundred pages, to the year 347.

X. Neunter Guss — die Sus-an-MembranX. Ninth Pour — the Sus-an Membrane

Die Sus-an-Membran erlaubt es einem Astartes, für Jahre in etwas zu fallen, das kein Schlaf ist. Ich habe drei Brüder darin gehabt. Zwei sind zurückgekommen.

The Sus-an Membrane allows an Astartes to fall for years into something that is not sleep. I have had three brothers in it. Two came back.

Ilm wird sie hoffentlich nie brauchen. Sie bekommen sie trotzdem alle, weil man nicht weiß, wer sie braucht.

Ilm will, one hopes, never need it. They all get it all the same, because one does not know who will need it.

Zugang 347/11.

Intake 347/11.

Der Eintrag ist elf Zeilen lang, was für dieses Buch ungewöhnlich viel ist. Ein normaler Zugang hat drei: woher, wie viel, in welchem Zustand.

The entry is eleven lines long, which for this book is unusually much. A normal intake has three: whence, how much, in what condition.

Ich schreibe ihn hier vollständig auf, weil ich ihn seit dieser Nacht auswendig kann und weil es der einzige Text ist, den ich in meinem Leben auswendig gelernt habe, ohne es zu wollen.

I write it out here in full, because I have known it by heart since that night and because it is the only text I have learned by heart in my life without wanting to.

Zugang 11 des Jahres 347.M41. Übergeben am neunten Tag, dritte Wache, am Nebentor der Schmiedehalle. Vierzehn Zylinder. Gensaat. Zustand: sechs unbrauchbar, acht brauchbar, davon drei rein. Herkunft nach Angabe des Übergebenden: geborgen von Gefallenen, deren Orden nicht mehr besteht. Übergebender: ohne Wappen. Ohne Rang. Ohne Namen. Auf Befragung: keine Angabe. Without rank. Without name. On being questioned: no statement. On repeated questioning: no statement. The deliverer asked for nothing and accepted nothing. He asked leave to be present at the next Smelting-In. Leave was granted. He went away afterwards. Note of the Apothecary: He was one of us. Not of our Chapter. Of us. — Merr'oth, Apothecary

Ich habe an dieser Stelle das Buch offen liegen lassen und bin hinausgegangen und einmal um das ganze Deck herumgegangen, was neunzehn Minuten dauert, und bin dann zurückgekommen und habe weitergelesen.

I left the book lying open at this point and went out and walked once round the whole deck, which takes nineteen minutes, and then came back and read on.

Es steht nichts weiter da. Der nächste Eintrag ist Zugang 12 des Jahres 348, Schiffslieferung, drei Zylinder, Routine.

There is nothing further. The next entry is Intake 12 of the year 348, ship's delivery, three cylinders, routine.

Ein Mann ohne Wappen, ohne Rang und ohne Namen bringt vierzehn Zylinder Gensaat an ein Nebentor, sagt nicht, wer er ist, will nichts dafür, und bittet um eine einzige Sache: dabeisein zu dürfen, wenn ein Kind aufgeschnitten wird.

A man without device, without rank and without name brings fourteen cylinders of gene-seed to a side gate, does not say who he is, wants nothing for it, and asks for one single thing: to be allowed to be present while a child is cut open.

Und Merr'oth hat es erlaubt.

And Merr'oth allowed it.

Ich habe versucht, mir Merr'oth vorzustellen, und es ist mir nicht gelungen, weil ich zu viel über ihn weiß und nichts davon nützt.

I have tried to picture Merr'oth to myself, and I have not succeeded, because I know too much about him and none of it helps.

Ich kenne seine Handschrift besser als die meines Vorgängers, weil ich Band zehn in drei Nächten öfter gelesen habe als Band elf in dreihundert Jahren. Ich weiß, dass er das k nach unten zog. I know his hand better than my predecessor's, because I read volume ten more often in three nights than volume eleven in three hundred years. I know that he drew the k downwards. I know that in copying he became faster in the second half, like everyone. I know from the intake book that in his service he entered two hundred and ninety intakes and set a note against six of them.

Fünf dieser Vermerke sind Beanstandungen. Verdorbene Ware, falsche Zählung, ein Lieferant, den er nie wieder empfangen wollte.

Five of those notes are objections. Spoiled goods, a false count, a supplier he never wanted to receive again.

The sixth is the sentence He was one of us. Not of our Chapter. Of us.

Ein Mann, der in seinem ganzen Dienst fünfmal etwas beanstandet und einmal etwas anderes tut, ist kein Schwärmer. Er ist jemand, dem in einer bestimmten Nacht etwas passiert ist, wofür sein Buch keine Spalte hatte, und der es deshalb in ganzen Sätzen hingeschrieben hat.

A man who in his whole service objects to something five times and once does something else is no enthusiast. He is somebody to whom something happened on a particular night for which his book had no column, and who therefore wrote it out in whole sentences.

Ich weiß nicht, was ich getan hätte. Das ist die ehrlichste Antwort, die ich habe. Ich habe in dreihundert Jahren einiges erlaubt, und wenn ich mich an die Gründe erinnere, waren die schlechtesten immer die vernünftigen.

I do not know what I would have done. That is the most honest answer I have. I have permitted a good deal in three hundred years, and when I remember the reasons, the worst were always the sensible ones.

Merr'oth hat ihn hineingelassen, und der Mann ohne Namen hat vier Stunden lang an der Wand der Kammer der Einschmelzung gestanden und zugesehen, wie ein Vierzehnjähriger auseinandergenommen wurde.

Merr'oth let him in, and the man without a name stood for four hours at the wall of the chamber of the Smelting-In and watched a fourteen-year-old being taken apart.

Und am Ende, als die Progenoiddrüsen saßen und der Junge zum ersten Mal begriff, was mit ihm gemacht worden war, hat er etwas gesagt.

And at the end, when the progenoid glands were seated and the boy grasped for the first time what had been done to him, he said something.

Und Merr'oth hat es aufgeschrieben.

XI. Zehnter Guss — das Melanochromische OrganXI. Tenth Pour — the Melanochromic Organ

Das Melanochromische Organ regelt die Haut. Bei uns färbt sie sich in den Wochen danach dunkel, und wir haben nach dem Fall lange darüber gestritten, ob wir das noch wollen, und die Antwort war, dass wir es nicht abstellen können, ohne die Gensaat zu verderben.

The Melanochromic Organ regulates the skin. With us it darkens in the weeks afterwards, and after the fall we argued for a long time about whether we still wanted that, and the answer was that we cannot switch it off without spoiling the gene-seed.

Es gibt Dinge, die man nicht wegnehmen kann, ohne alles wegzunehmen. Das ist die kürzeste Fassung von allem, was ich in dieser Nacht gelernt habe.

There are things one cannot take away without taking everything away. That is the shortest version of everything I learned on this night.

Ich habe im Zugangsbuch weitergesucht.

I went on searching in the intake book.

Nicht vorwärts — rückwärts und vorwärts, in beide Richtungen, Jahr für Jahr, nach demselben Wortlaut. Ohne Wappen. Ohne Rang. Ohne Namen.

Not forwards — backwards and forwards, in both directions, year by year, for the same wording. Without device. Without rank. Without name.

Ich fand zwei weitere.

I found two more.

Zugang 4 des Jahres 289.M41. Neun Zylinder. Am selben Nebentor. Derselbe Wortlaut, kürzer gefasst, von einem Apothecarius, der Merr'oths Vorvorgänger war und offenbar weniger Sinn für Vermerke hatte.

Intake 4 of the year 289.M41. Nine cylinders. At the same side gate. The same wording, more briefly put, by an Apothecary who was Merr'oth's predecessor but one and evidently had less feeling for notes.

Zugang 19 des Jahres 409.M41. Sechs Zylinder. Zustand schlecht. Und dahinter, in einer dritten Handschrift, ein einziger Satz: Er ist nicht bis zum Tor gekommen. Man hat ihn davor gefunden.

Intake 19 of the year 409.M41. Six cylinders. Condition poor. And behind it, in a third hand, one single sentence: He did not reach the gate. He was found before it.

Zweihundertneunundachtzig bis vierhundertneun. Einhundertzwanzig Jahre.

Two hundred and eighty-nine to four hundred and nine. A hundred and twenty years.

Ein Astartes, der einhundertzwanzig Jahre lang durch die Leere zieht, Gefallene birgt, deren Orden es nicht mehr gibt, und die Gensaat an fremden Nebentoren abgibt, ohne seinen Namen zu nennen und ohne etwas zu nehmen.

An Astartes who for a hundred and twenty years travels through the void, recovers the fallen whose Chapters no longer exist, and hands the gene-seed in at strange side gates, without giving his name and without taking anything.

Es gibt bei den Söhnen Vulkans ein Urteil dafür. Nicht bei allen, und nicht bei uns — wir haben nur zwei Urteile, und das ist einer der Gründe, warum wir sind, wo wir sind. Aber es gibt es.

Among the sons of Vulkan there is a judgement for that. Not among all of them, and not among us — we have only two judgements, and that is one of the reasons we are where we are. But it exists.

Der Verurteilte verliert Wappen, Rang und Namen. Der Name wird nicht gestrichen, sondern aus den Ordensbüchern herausgeschnitten, damit ein Loch bleibt und jeder, der die Seite umblättert, sieht, dass dort etwas war. Dann zieht er hinaus und bringt heim, was von den Vergessenen übrig ist, und gibt es ab, wo es hingehört, und niemand verzeichnet, dass er es getan hat.

The condemned man loses device, rank and name. The name is not struck out but cut out of the Chapter books, so that a hole remains and everyone who turns the page sees that something was there. Then he goes out and brings home what is left of the forgotten, and hands it in where it belongs, and nobody records that he did it.

I spent three nights on it, which I could not afford, and I used everything a Chapter such as ours has: intercepted registers, captured books, two prisoners I keep alive for other purposes.

Die beiden Gefangenen sind ein Ordensdiener und ein Bibliothekarsgehilfe, beide von der Welt, die wir vor sieben Jahren besucht haben, beide seit sieben Jahren an Bord. The two prisoners are a Chapter serf and a library assistant, both from the world we visited seven years ago, both aboard for seven years. I keep them alive because a warband without somebody who can read Imperial registers is blind, and because for that one needs somebody who has learned it.

They know what they are here for. We have never spoken about it, and they work well, which I took for self-preservation until the elder one asked me two years ago whether he might put the registers in order, because they were disordered.

I woke them in those three nights and told them what I was looking for, and I did not tell them why.

He was right, and he explained it to me although he knew that I would rather have heard it otherwise, and I needed three nights to notice that he had done what Nesk cannot and what Sef'ran has only lately begun to do.

That is the part at which the judgement works.

Es gibt kein Loch, das man von außen findet. Ein herausgeschnittener Name ist in dem Buch, in dem er stand, sehr deutlich und außerhalb davon überhaupt nicht vorhanden. Ich weiß nicht, aus welchem Orden er kam. Ich weiß nicht, wann er verurteilt wurde und wofür. Ich weiß nicht, ob er es als Strafe empfand.

There is no hole one finds from outside. A name cut out is very plain in the book in which it stood and outside it not present at all. I do not know which Chapter he came from. I do not know when he was condemned or for what. I do not know whether he felt it as a punishment.

Ich weiß, dass er in einhundertzwanzig Jahren mindestens neunundzwanzig Zylinder Gensaat abgegeben hat, an uns, an einem Nebentor, und dass davon vierzehn brauchbar waren.

I know that in a hundred and twenty years he handed in at least twenty-nine cylinders of gene-seed, to us, at a side gate, and that fourteen of them were usable.

And I know that he died before a gate that was not his, with six cylinders that were already spoiled.

Ilm hat in diesem Augenblick eine Haut, die noch die eines Kindes von Kethris ist. In drei Wochen wird sie dunkel sein wie meine, und dann wird niemand mehr sehen können, woher er kam, und das ist der Zweck der Sache.

Ilm at this moment has a skin that is still that of a child of Kethris. In three weeks it will be dark like mine, and then nobody will be able to see where he came from, and that is the purpose of the thing.

XII. Elfter Guss — die Oolithische NiereXII. Eleventh Pour — the Oolitic Kidney

Die Oolithische Niere filtert, was der Preomnor durchgelassen hat. Sie ist der Schritt, an dem ein Kandidat für gewöhnlich aufhört, mich als Person wahrzunehmen, und ich mag ihn deshalb nicht, obwohl er handwerklich einfach ist.

The Oolitic Kidney filters what the Preomnor has let through. It is the step at which a candidate usually stops perceiving me as a person, and I do not like it for that reason, although it is simple as craft.

Ilm ist seit einer halben Stunde nicht mehr ansprechbar. Das ist normal. Es ist normal, und ich habe es in vierhundertsiebenundzwanzig Nächten nie als Erleichterung empfunden, außer in dieser.

Ilm has been unresponsive for half an hour. That is normal. It is normal, and in four hundred and twenty-seven nights I have never felt it as a relief, except on this one.

Nesk kam am Morgen des dritten Tages, ohne dass ich ihn gerufen hätte, und stellte etwas zu essen neben mich, das ich nicht anrührte, und blieb stehen.

Nesk came on the morning of the third day, without my having called him, and set something to eat down beside me that I did not touch, and remained standing.

Er bleibt nie stehen. Er stellt ab und geht.

He never remains standing. He sets down and goes.

Ich sah auf, und er sah mich an, und dann tat er etwas, das ich in sechzig Jahren nicht gesehen hatte: Er hob die Hand und deutete auf das Zugangsbuch, das seit drei Nächten offen auf meinem Tisch lag.

I looked up, and he looked at me, and then he did something I had not seen in sixty years: he raised his hand and pointed at the intake book, which had lain open on my table for three nights.

There is a word in the Low Tongue that every void-born child knows, because it is said in every cabin in which children fall down, and that is all of them. One does not say it loudly. One says it in the tone in which one speaks to somebody who is small and in pain.

XIII. Zwölfter bis fünfzehnter Guss — die kleinen SchritteXIII. Twelfth to Fifteenth Pour — the Small Steps

Vier kleine Schritte hintereinander. Sie gehen schnell und sie gehen bei jedem gleich, und ein Apothecarius, der bei ihnen redet, ist ein Apothecarius, der bei ihnen nicht mehr aufpasst.

Four small steps one after another. They go quickly and they go the same with everyone, and an Apothecary who talks during them is an Apothecary who is no longer attending to them.

For three hundred years I took that for the turn of phrase of a captain who is no Apothecary. It is not. I have the figures; I keep them myself. Of four hundred and twenty-seven candidates, a hundred and seventy-seven did not come through the Smelting-In, and of those hundred and seventy-seven, eighty-eight died of something I carry in my own books as failure without finding.

The obvious version runs: the nineteenth step carries because it is the only moment in four hours in which somebody bends over the candidate and speaks in a different tone from the one in which one asks for tools.

Ich habe dagegen zwei Einwände gehabt und beide selbst widerlegt.

I have had two objections to this and refuted both myself.

Der erste Einwand: Es könnte am Wortlaut liegen. An der Silbenfolge, am Klang, an irgendetwas, das eine Wirkung hat, die ich nicht messen kann. Wir sind ein Orden, der zum Chaos übergegangen ist; wir haben genug gesehen, um Wirkungen ohne Ursache nicht auszuschließen.

The first objection: it might lie in the wording. In the sequence of syllables, in the sound, in something that has an effect I cannot measure. We are a Chapter that has gone over to Chaos; we have seen enough not to rule out effects without causes.

The wording was unchanged. What was missing was the half-metre.

The second objection: then it would be immaterial which word one says. One could say anything, in any language, so long as one bends and finds the tone.

I have failed to find it four hundred and twenty-seven times and got two hundred and fifty sons all the same, which means that it also works by halves.

There is no way of writing that down without the next man reading it and ceasing to be able to do it.

He came without a pretext. No dressing, no suture. He placed himself in the door of the Apothecarion and waited until I looked up.

„Sie sind seit neun Tagen nicht auf dem Übungsdeck gewesen." Er kam nicht herein. „Sie gehen jeden dritten Tag. Seit ich hier bin."

"You have not been on the training deck for nine days." He did not come in. "You go every third day. Since I have been here."

"He said it to a boy who lay on this table six hundred years ago, and the boy has been dead for five hundred years, and we have been saying it ever since because an Apothecary took it for a formula." Sef'ran looked past me, at the cold basin. "It was never meant for us. We are overhearing something that belonged to somebody else."

„Ja."

"Yes."

He did not finish the sentence. I did not let him finish it; I put a clamp in his hand and asked him to lay it in the basin, which was pointless, because the basin was cold.

And I, who in three hundred years have had an answer to every question in this chamber, because that is my trade and because an answer one does not have kills a candidate, said to a twenty-nine-year-old brother with two scars I closed myself:

This is the step for whose sake the other eighteen exist. Everything before it makes a warrior. This makes a father.

That is how we remain. Not by reinforcement. By harvest.

I take the cylinder out of the cold chamber. It is a hand long and of matt glass, and the label on the lid is my own hand from sixty years ago.

In the two days between Nesk's slate and this night I went through the lineage book of the stocks.

That is a different book from the intake book. The intake book records what comes in. The lineage book records what has become of what: which gland was harvested from which brother, from which gland he came, and so on, backwards, as far as the records reach.

I have kept it for three hundred years. I have never read it backwards. One does not read it backwards; one enters at the front.

That is a figure every one of us knows, because it occurs in every version of the story we tell ourselves. We cleared the fortress-monastery in eleven days, under fire, and what we took we took in whatever was to hand. There is a tale about how Chapter Master Vhorn carried a case with his own hands. The tale is probably even true.

Nine tenths of what we are is what he saved.

I looked at this point for something that makes the thing more bearable, and I found two possibilities and rejected both.

That is the point at which they grasp what has been done to them. Not before. Before it is pain, and pain is something that stops.

XV. Siebzehnter und achtzehnter Guss — das Schwarze CarapaxXV. Seventeenth and Eighteenth Pour — the Black Carapace

Das Schwarze Carapax kommt zuletzt, weil es nicht in den Körper gehört, sondern an ihn. Eine Schicht unter der Haut, über Brust und Rücken, mit Anschlüssen, in die eines Tages eine Rüstung greift. Es ist der einzige Schritt, bei dem ich nicht in einen Menschen schneide, sondern etwas an ihn hefte.

The Black Carapace comes last, because it does not belong in the body but on it. A layer under the skin, over chest and back, with connectors into which one day an armour takes hold. It is the only step in which I do not cut into a man but fasten something to him.

Es dauert vierzig Minuten und ist die sauberste Arbeit der ganzen Nacht.

It takes forty minutes and is the cleanest work of the whole night.

Ich will an dieser Stelle etwas klarstellen, weil ich es sonst stehen ließe, und weil ein Bericht, in dem der Verfasser gut aussieht, ein schlechter Bericht ist.

I want to make something clear at this point, because otherwise I would let it stand, and because a report in which the writer comes off well is a bad report.

Ilm wird in siebzehn Monaten zum ersten Mal mit uns hinuntergehen.

In seventeen months Ilm will go down with us for the first time.

Wir nehmen keine Welten. Dafür sind wir zu wenige. Wir tun, was Kriegsbänder unserer Größe tun: Wir kommen an Orte, an denen etwas ist, das wir brauchen, und wir nehmen es, und die Kosten trägt, wer dort wohnt. Wir haben in den vierhundertzwölf Jahren seit dem Fall neunzehn Welten so besucht, manche mehrmals.

We do not take worlds. We are too few for that. We do what warbands of our size do: we come to places where there is something we need, and we take it, and the cost is borne by whoever lives there. In the four hundred and twelve years since the fall we have visited nineteen worlds in that way, some of them more than once.

I do not offset that. There is no version of this story in which we come off well, and I have heard all the versions, mostly from myself.

Sef'ran, who asked eleven brothers what a word means, and who listened to me for eleven minutes without interrupting, two years ago on Halvest Secundus drove three hundred people into an air-circulation shaft and sealed the shaft, because that was quicker than the alternative and because we were in a hurry.

That is what we are. We are not the tale of the world we held against an order. We were that once, for twelve years, and after that we became what becomes of a Chapter that has been cast out and was in the right: something that no longer needs a reason.

Not out of shame. I do not have enough of that left for it to suffice for a decision. I have thought of it because it does not belong to us. Because a man without a name said it to a boy who had nothing to do with us, and because we have been using it ever since as we use everything we find at strange gates.

Das Carapax sitzt. Die Anschlüsse liegen frei. Nesk wischt mir den Unterarm ab, weil ich in dreihundert Jahren nicht gelernt habe, die linke Hand hoch genug zu halten.

The carapace is seated. The connectors lie free. Nesk wipes my forearm, because in three hundred years I have not learned to hold my left hand high enough.

It is the eighth hour. Outside it is neither night nor morning, because we are on a ship and there is none of that there.

XVI. Der neunzehnte SchrittXVI. The Nineteenth Step

Ilm liegt offen und ist bei Bewusstsein und hat begriffen, was mit ihm gemacht worden ist.

Ilm lies open and is conscious and has grasped what has been done to him.

Seine Hände liegen mit den Handflächen nach oben, so wie sie seit der ersten Drüse liegen, und sie bewegen sich nicht mehr. In den ersten zwei Stunden gingen sie auf und zu. Das hört immer irgendwann auf, und ich habe nie darauf geachtet, wann.

His hands lie with the palms upward, as they have lain since the first gland, and they no longer move. In the first two hours they opened and closed. That always stops at some point, and I have never noticed when.

The book lies open on the lectern, and the nineteenth step stands where it has stood for six hundred and twenty-four years, because an Apothecary named Merr'oth wrote it after the colophon at the lower edge, more narrowly, because the space was not intended for it.

He allowed a man without a name to stand at the wall, and the man watched for four hours, and at the end he said what one says in the Low Tongue when one picks up a child that has fallen down. And Merr'oth, who was an Apothecary and nothing further, heard a stranger say something in a language he did not speak about a candidate he had just taken apart himself — and took it for a blessing.

In six hundred and twenty-four years nobody has spoken it the way a woman in a cabin says it to a child that has fallen down.

I look at Ilm, who is fourteen and comes from the ash fields of Kethris and had a stone that looked like a face, and who no longer knows where he put it down.
