I. Der VordruckI. The Form

Der Vordruck M-9 hat vierzehn Felder, und in dreizehn davon steht, was man erwartet: Einheit, Abschnitt, Zeitraum, Kopfstärke bei Antritt, Kopfstärke bei Abschluss, Art des Verlustes, Beleg. Das vierzehnte Feld heißt Bemerkungen und ist zwei Zentimeter hoch, und in neun von zehn Meldungen bleibt es leer.

Form M-9 has fourteen fields, and in thirteen of them stands what one expects: unit, sector, period, head strength at commencement, head strength at conclusion, kind of loss, evidence. The fourteenth field is called Remarks and is two centimetres high, and in nine returns out of ten it stays empty.

Der Zobelmark ist ein Moor. Das steht so in keiner Vorabunterrichtung; dort steht Heide- und Bruchland, befestigungsgünstig. Es ist ein Moor. The Sable Reach is a bog. That stands so in no preliminary briefing; there it says heath and fenland, favourable for fortification. It is a bog. It is black, it is to a depth of two metres water that looks like ground, and all the year round it smells of wet smoke although nothing is burning. One does not dig a trench in the Sable Reach; one builds it. One drives piles, one sets planks, one stacks peat bricks like masonry, and every eleven days the whole thing sinks a hand's breadth and one starts again at the top.

Im ersten Winter starben achtzig Mann am Wasser, bevor einer am Feind starb.

In the first winter eighty men died of the water before one died of the enemy.

As to the enemy: in the preliminary briefing it said scattered insurgents, estimated strength two thousand. They were Genestealer Cults. The clerk wrote that down only in the third year, because the word was not spoken in the chancellery of Belthane and because he did not know it.

What followed from that the clerk later had to write in a sentence he began three times over, because it seemed to him too large for a form: The unit was deployed against an enemy that came into being because a works was carried as closed that was never closed.

Er hat den Satz stehen lassen. Es war der erste, bei dem er wusste, dass er ihn nicht mehr streichen würde.

He let the sentence stand. It was the first at which he knew that he would not strike it out again.

Zwei Anmerkungen zur Form, weil beide später wichtig werden.

Two notes on form, because both become important later.

Die erste betrifft die Gliederung. Eine Verlustmeldung ist kein Tagebuch. Sie wird nach Sachzusammenhang geordnet, nicht nach Datum, siehe Abschnitt zwei, Absatz elf, und das ist vernünftig, weil eine Kanzlei nach Sachen sucht und nicht nach Tagen. Wo in dieser Meldung ein Datum steht, ist es geprüft. Wo eines fehlt, fehlt es, weil der Schreiber es nicht mehr feststellen konnte.

The first concerns the arrangement. A loss return is no diary. It is ordered by subject matter, not by date, see section two, paragraph eleven, and that is sensible, because a chancellery searches by subject and not by day. Where a date stands in this return, it has been checked. Where one is missing, it is missing because the clerk could no longer establish it.

Die zweite betrifft die Person.

The second concerns person.

A clerk writes in the third person. That is regulation, it stands in the Standing Instruction for chancellery service of the ground forces, section two, and it has a sensible reason: the clerk is not a witness but an instrument. He is not to have seen, he is to have established.

The clerk of the Third has held to that for five years.

II. Die PünktlichenII. The Punctual Ones

Alle sechsunddreißig Tage kommt der Rückläufer.

Every thirty-six days the return convoy comes.

Vier Kettenschlepper des Munitorum, jeder mit zwei Anhängern, über die alte Torfbahntrasse von Halvern-Ost, achtzehn Stunden Fahrt durch Gelände, in dem sich seit vier Jahren nichts mehr bewegt außer ihnen. Sie kommen am Morgen des sechsunddreißigsten Tages an, zwischen der siebten und der neunten Stunde, und in fünf Jahren sind sie zweimal später gekommen und niemals ausgeblieben.

Four tracked haulers of the Munitorum, each with two trailers, over the old peat railway line from Halvern-East, eighteen hours' journey through country in which nothing has moved for four years except them. They arrive on the morning of the thirty-sixth day, between the seventh and the ninth hour, and in five years they have come late twice and have never failed to come.

Die Kompanie nannte sie die Pünktlichen.

The company called them the Punctual Ones.

They bring: rations for two thousand eight hundred men. Burning paste. Water filters. Peat saws. Cable. Fourteen barrels of disinfectant. Post sacks, mostly empty. And ammunition, calculated by a consumption key drawn up for heath and fenland and which for a bog is about a third too low.

They bring nothing that is a human being.

Im ersten Jahr fiel das niemandem auf, weil im ersten Jahr niemand Ersatz erwartet. Im zweiten Jahr fiel es dem Hauptmann auf. Im dritten Jahr fiel es allen auf.

In the first year no one noticed, because in the first year no one expects replacements. In the second year the Captain noticed. In the third year everyone noticed.

Hauptmann Ottokar Brehm führte die Dritte seit der Aufstellung. Er war ein schwerer, langsamer Mann aus dem Werftbezirk, der die Angewohnheit hatte, vor jeder Antwort einmal auszuatmen, was ihn dumm wirken ließ und was er sich, wie der Schreiber vermutet, genau deshalb angewöhnt hatte. Er hat in fünf Jahren zweimal die Stimme erhoben, und beide Male ging es nicht um den Feind.

Captain Ottokar Brehm led the Third since its raising. He was a heavy, slow man from the shipyard district who had the habit of breathing out once before every answer, which made him seem stupid and which, as the clerk suspects, he had adopted for exactly that reason. In five years he raised his voice twice, and both times it was not about the enemy.

Am 212. Tag 816.M41 stand Brehm neben dem dritten Schlepper, während abgeladen wurde, und zählte die Rationskisten.

Brehm breathed out. "Then write a return report. Eight hundred and sixty ration sets too many. And write with it that we would take eight hundred and sixty men instead."

Der Schreiber schrieb die Rückmeldung. Sie ging mit dem Rückläufer hinaus.

The clerk wrote the return report. It went out with the return convoy.

Auf die zweite antwortete niemand. Auf die dritte antwortete jemand.

To the second no one replied. To the third someone replied.

Die Antwort kam am 248. Tag 816.M41, ein halbes Blatt, gestempelt, ohne Unterschrift, und sie lautete in ihrer Gesamtheit:

The reply came on the 248th day 816.M41, half a sheet, stamped, without signature, and it ran in its entirety:

Zuteilung erfolgt nach Sollstärke. Sollstärke unverändert. Abweichungen der Iststärke sind mit Vordruck M-9 zu belegen. Vordruck M-9 liegt hier nicht vor.

Allocation is made according to establishment strength. Establishment strength unchanged. Deviations of actual strength are to be evidenced by Form M-9. Form M-9 is not held here.

Der Schreiber hat dieses halbe Blatt fünf Jahre lang aufbewahrt. Es ist Blatt zwei dieser Meldung.

The clerk kept that half sheet for five years. It is sheet two of this return.

Er hat damals nicht verstanden, was darauf stand. Er hat verstanden, dass es zwei Sätze enthielt, die einander im Weg standen, und dass ihm das gefiel, weil er dachte, ein Fehler sei etwas, das man findet und dann behebt.

He did not understand at the time what stood on it. He understood that it contained two sentences that stood in each other's way, and that this pleased him, because he thought that an error is something one finds and then remedies.

III. Der dritte WinterIII. The Third Winter

Der Schreiber hält es für erforderlich, an dieser Stelle den Zustand der Stellung zu beschreiben, weil eine Verlustmeldung ohne den Zustand der Stellung eine Liste von Zufällen ist.

The clerk holds it necessary at this point to describe the condition of the position, because a loss return without the condition of the position is a list of coincidences.

Ein Graben im Zobelmark ist kein Graben, sondern ein Kasten. Man treibt Pfähle bis auf den Fels, man setzt Bohlen dagegen, man füllt hinter die Bohlen Torfziegel, und dann hat man einen Kasten aus Holz und Torf, der im Wasser steht und den man leerpumpen muss. Der Boden des Kastens liegt unter dem Wasserspiegel. Immer. Das ist keine Nachlässigkeit; es gibt im Zobelmark keinen Punkt, der darüber liegt.

A trench in the Sable Reach is no trench but a box. One drives piles down to the rock, one sets planks against them, one fills peat bricks behind the planks, and then one has a box of wood and peat standing in water which one has to pump out. The floor of the box lies below the water level. Always. That is no negligence; there is in the Sable Reach no point that lies above it.

In the third winter the men stood between eleven and fourteen hours a day in water whose temperature, by the record of medic Gerda Ohm, lay between two and six degrees. Ohm treated a hundred and six cases of trench foot in the winter of 817, forty of them requiring amputation, and she carried out two, because she could carry out only two.

Zur Pumpe.

As to the pump.

Die zweite Pumpe war seit dem Frühjahr 817 ausgefallen, und der Rückläufer brachte kein Ersatzteil, weil das Ersatzteil nicht auf dem Verbrauchsschlüssel für Heide- und Bruchland steht. Soldat Anselm Duhr, gelernter Maschinenschlosser aus dem Hafenbezirk, hat sie im Herbst 817 aus Teilen einer Torfsäge, zwei Ölfässern und dem Getriebe eines zerschossenen Karrens wieder in Gang gesetzt.

The second pump had failed since the spring of 817, and the return convoy brought no spare part, because the spare part does not stand on the consumption key for heath and fenland. Trooper Anselm Duhr, a trained machine fitter from the harbour district, got it running again in the autumn of 817 from parts of a peat saw, two oil drums and the gearing of a shot-up cart.

The clerk entered the circumstance according to regulation. He entered, contrary to regulation, the day before as well: Duhr serviced the pump on the 13th day, as every tenth day, and he serviced it properly, and he readjusted the bearing block, which would not have been necessary if he had known that he would not need it any more.

The clerk has often thought about that and enters here his opinion, though no one has asked for it: Duhr serviced it because it was to go on running after him. He knew what he would do. He gave it the three hours all the same.

As to the rations.

The consumption key provides three thousand two hundred calories for heath and fenland. A man who stands fourteen hours in water at four degrees consumes, according to Ohm, about four thousand eight hundred. The difference comes from the man.

Im dritten Winter wog die Dritte Kompanie im Schnitt neun Kilogramm weniger als bei der Landung.

In the third winter the Third Company weighed on average nine kilograms less than at the landing.

Gardistin Meta Cobb, ausgehoben aus dem Bezirk Nordschleuse, hat ihre Rationsmarken gegen Nähnadeln getauscht. Sie hat den halben Zug in Filz eingenäht — Torffilz, aus den Ziegeln geschnitten, zwischen Stiefel und Fuß, was gegen den Grabenfuß nicht half, aber gegen die Kälte, und was die Männer, die es hatten, mit einem Ernst verteidigten, der aus der Entfernung lächerlich wirkt und aus der Nähe nicht.

Guardswoman Meta Cobb, raised from the North Sluice district, traded her ration chits for sewing needles. She sewed half the platoon into felt — peat felt, cut from the bricks, between boot and foot, which did not help against trench foot but did against the cold, and which the men who had it defended with an earnestness that from a distance seems ridiculous and from close up does not.

The Sinter came by night, in small groups, between six and twenty men, without preparatory fire and without a plan of withdrawal. They came on average every nine days. They came in every weather, and they came even when it was plainly pointless, and in thirty months the Third was not once able to recover a wounded man of theirs, because they always took their wounded with them, even when it cost them two more.

The clerk notes: in this period a hundred and twelve ration sets per day were delivered in excess of the actual head strength. They were not refused; there was no procedure for it. They were stacked.

IV. Was nicht kommtIV. What Does Not Come

It cost the clerk a further seven months to put it together, and he sets out here how, because a loss return needs evidence and because this is the only evidence he has.

Am 171. Tag 818.M41 führte Feldwebel Rasch mit vierzig Mann einen Stoß auf Sinter-Sieben.

On the 171st day 818.M41 Sergeant Rasch led a thrust with forty men against Sinter-Seven.

Der Zweck war begrenzt und wurde ordnungsgemäß befohlen: Feststellung der Feindstärke, weil die Kanzlei in Halvern-Ost seit vier Jahren auf der Zahl zweitausend bestand und weil Brehm eine Zahl brauchte, die er belegen konnte.

The purpose was limited and properly ordered: establishment of enemy strength, because the chancellery in Halvern-East had insisted for four years on the figure two thousand and because Brehm needed a figure he could evidence.

IX. Die GegenzeichnungIX. The Countersignature

Der Vordruck M-9 verlangt bei Meldung des vollständigen Verlustes einer Einheit zwei Unterschriften.

Form M-9 requires two signatures for the report of the complete loss of a unit.

Die Erstzeichnung leistet der Führer der Einheit. Die Gegenzeichnung leistet ein Offizier, der ihm nicht untersteht — in der Regel der Kommissar, ersatzweise der Medicus, ersatzweise ein Offizier einer Nachbareinheit. Der Sinn ist einleuchtend und der Schreiber hält ihn bis heute für richtig: Eine Einheit, die ihre eigene Auslöschung bescheinigt, bescheinigt zugleich, dass niemand mehr da ist, der widersprechen könnte. The sense is evident and the clerk holds it right to this day: a unit that certifies its own extinction certifies at the same time that no one is left who could contradict it. Two hands that have nothing to do with each other are the only safeguard a chancellery has across eighty light years.

X. OstreihX. Ostreih

Am 12. Tag 819.M41 versuchten die Sinter den Durchbruch bei Ostreih.

On the 12th day 819.M41 the Sinter attempted the breakthrough at Ostreih.

Zur Sache selbst kann der Schreiber wenig beitragen, was ein Beleg wäre. Er lag in der Kanzlei unter zwei Bohlen, weil man ihm gesagt hatte, die Kassette dürfe nicht nass werden, und er hat sechs Stunden lang nichts gesehen. Was hier steht, ist zusammengetragen aus zweiundvierzig Befragungen, die er in den folgenden neun Tagen geführt hat, und wo sich die Aussagen widersprechen, hat er beide aufgenommen.

To the matter itself the clerk can contribute little that would be evidence. He lay in the chancellery under two planks, because he had been told that the case must not get wet, and for six hours he saw nothing. What stands here is compiled from forty-two interviews he conducted in the following nine days, and where the accounts contradict one another he has taken up both.

The demolition took place at 04:44 and broke the attack apart in the middle and saved the remainder of the Third, and the clerk holds it his duty to record here that Brehm did not seem heroic while doing it but annoyed: by the account of three men he breathed out twice on the way there and said that it was not his job.

XI. Eine HandXI. One Hand

Der Schreiber hat vom 22. bis zum 61. Tag 819.M41 versucht, eine Unterschrift zu beschaffen. Er führt die Versuche einzeln auf, weil er möchte, dass jemand sieht, dass es Versuche waren.

From the 22nd to the 61st day 819.M41 the clerk attempted to obtain a signature. He lists the attempts singly, because he wants someone to see that they were attempts.

Wiederholt am 24., 26., 29. Tag. Keine Antwort. Ansfeld stellte am 29. Tag fest, dass die Gegenstelle des Kellerwerks seit dem 14. Tag 819.M41 zwar Trägerwelle sendet, aber nicht mehr moduliert. Das bedeutet, dass dort ein Gerät läuft.

First. Application to the regimental staff in the Cellar Works for the dispatch of an officer for the first signature. Sent on the 22nd day by vox by vox operator Ruthe Ansfeld. No answer. Colonel Malwin Tesch had begun it. He had filled in unit, sector, period and head strength at commencement, in a very small, very straight hand. He had got as far as the field evidence. In it stood one word, and the word was see, and after it there was nothing.

Daneben lagen einunddreißig Blatt, die der Schreiber mitgenommen hat und die in dieser Meldung als Blatt einhundertachtzig bis zweihundertzehn geführt werden. Es sind Entwürfe. They are thirty-one attempts at the same application, over fourteen months, each formulated a little differently, each a little shorter, and the last consists of two sentences.
