Inschrift am Kriegerdenkmal von Hive Voss, Verrath IV
Prolog: Die Stadt vor dem MorgenPrologue: The City Before Morning
Verrath IV was a world that had stopped sleeping.
That had been no decision. The sleeplessness had been forced on the planet from outside, by the growth of the cultist movement that over the last two years had eaten its way through the lower strata of the hive city of Hive Voss like mould through a wet wall: invisible, then everywhere. The work shifts in the factories had stopped sleeping because fear kept them awake. The trading houses in the Middle Ring had stopped sleeping because rumours do not rest. And the garrison troops of the 7th Calixis Infantry Regiment had stopped sleeping because one order after another came that meant: not yet. Not yet.
It was shortly after the third hour of the night when the last order came.
Keine Zusammenfassung.
No summary. No explanation. The words on the vox strip that the registrar copied out and passed on were so short that one could have taken them for an error:
ANGRIFF AUF DEN UNTEREN RING. ALLE EINHEITEN: STELLUNG HALTEN.
ATTACK ON THE LOWER RING. ALL UNITS: HOLD POSITION.
In the fourth barracks hall of the regimental base, in which three hundred soldiers sat or stood on their cots or had done without both and simply squatted on the floor, this order was heard in three different ways.
Trooper Mira Dahl heard it and stood up before the last word had been spoken.
Sergeant Tobas Kern heard it and closed his eyes for a moment, and in that moment he did something he had rarely done in twenty-seven years of service.
Young Guardsman Elio Vassar heard it and thought that he would die today, and noticed to his own surprise that this thought did not paralyse him.
That was the beginning of the only morning that counted for all three of them.
TEIL I: DAS MÄDCHEN AUS DEM UNTEREN RINGPART I: THE GIRL FROM THE LOWER RING
1. Herkunft
1. Origin
Ich bin nicht aus Pflicht Soldatin geworden.
I did not become a soldier out of duty.
That is the version I tell when an officer asks. The short version that raises no questions: the 7th Calixis took my home city under contract, and I chose the service because the service was better than the factory. That is even true — it is completely true. But it is not the whole truth.
The whole truth begins with my coming from the Lower Ring of Hive Voss.
The Lower Ring is not a place where one raises children. It is a place where children grow up, which is a subtly different thing: without design, without plan, in the gaps between what the city actually was before the Upper Ring ate it. The lights in the Lower Ring flickered, always. The gas had a metallic aftertaste, always. The walls, the floor, the water — everything had the same grey-brown colour that comes about when poverty is left alone long enough.
My mother taught me what an aquila was before I was eight. She explained it to me with both hands — fingers spread, hands laid together, a double-headed eagle of flesh and bone. "That is the Emperor," she said. "He sees us." I asked her why it is always dark in the Lower Ring, then, if he sees us.
Sie hat keine Antwort gehabt. Aber sie hat die Hände nicht weggelegt.
She had no answer. But she did not put the hands away.
That was the first contradiction that defined me: belief in a god who was plainly imperfect, or in a world that was plainly imperfect, and the decision to hold both at once. I never resolved it. I simply carried it.
At fifteen I worked shifts in converter plant, line 7-B. At sixteen I began to spend my free hours on the training ground the garrison maintained at the edge of the Lower Ring. Not because anyone had advised it. Because shooting at targets was the first thing in my life I was good at, and because it was good in a way I could explain: I aimed, I fired, I hit, that was correct. The converter plant had no such clear measures.
Mit siebzehn habe ich unterschrieben.
At seventeen I signed.
Gut. Ich will keine echte Verantwortung. Ich will kämpfen, ich will überleben, ich will zurückkehren in den Unteren Ring und meiner Mutter zeigen, dass die Hände mit dem Aquila etwas waren, das sich gelohnt hat.
That was four years ago. I am a trooper now, which in some regiments means a great deal and in the 7th Calixis means that one has survived long enough to earn a rank that carries no real responsibility. Good. I do not want real responsibility. I want to fight, I want to survive, I want to go back to the Lower Ring and show my mother that the hands with the aquila were something that was worth it.
Das ist der Plan.
That is the plan.
Ich bin gut darin, Pläne zu machen.
I am good at making plans.
2. Vor dem Angriff
2. Before the attack
The order comes at 03:12 hours, by Imperial standard time.
I stand up before it has been read out to the end, because I was already awake. Awake for two hours, on the cot, staring at the ceiling, and not out of fear — out of calculation. If I sleep, I sleep deeply. If I sleep deeply and the alarm comes, I am three minutes slower. Three minutes can mean everything. So I did not sleep.
My kit is already assembled: flak armour, lasgun, four power cells, combat knife. Medical pack. The small aquila of hardened glass that my mother gave me at parting and that I carry in the left breastplate pocket, there where the heart theoretically lies. I do not believe it protects me. Nor do I believe it does nothing.
Sergeant Kren gives out the march division: third platoon takes the southern section of the Lower Ring, Cross Street eight to twelve. That is my section. That is my home.
Kren does not know that. Nor is it relevant. It is a section like any other section, and I shall hold it like any other section.
I tell myself that while I step out of the barracks building into the early-spring air of Hive Voss. The city smells as the city always smells: metal dust, synthetic exhaust, the faint undertone of a hundred thousand people in a confined space. But tonight it also smells of something else.
Rauch. Aus dem Süden.
Smoke. From the south.
Aus dem Unteren Ring.
From the Lower Ring.
Ich laufe schneller.
I run faster.
I tell myself this is tactically sensible. The smoke means active engagement, that means we have to take position quickly. That is all true. I tell myself that because it is true and because it does not make the other thing, which lies behind it, untrue.
Meine Mutter wohnt in Querstraße neun.
My mother lives in Cross Street nine.
3. Querstraße Neun
3. Cross Street Nine
Die Kultisten kommen aus dem Kanal.
The cultists come out of the conduit.
Not dramatically — not with battle cries or Chaos symbols, not the way it is in the reports I had heard. They come out of the conduit that runs under Cross Street nine and in which no one has been since my childhood, because the water is poisonous and because the darkness there has a different quality from the darkness elsewhere. They come out like rats out of a flood: hasty, disordered, in groups that have no combat formation.
Thirty metres away when I first see them. Cover: an overturned industrial pallet of plasteel, dense enough for me, too low for shooting upright. I go to my knees.
Der erste Schuss sitzt.
The first shot lands.
Denken kostet Zeit. Zögern kostet Leben.
The lasgun makes the sound it always makes — a crack that is shorter than one expects, with a smell of burnt air — and the first cultist falls without a sound. That does nothing to me. I am trained, and what is trained is exactly this: the nothing between the moment in which one sees and the moment in which one fires. Thinking costs time. Hesitating costs lives.
Ich schieße neun Mal in zwanzig Sekunden.
I fire nine times in twenty seconds.
Dann höre ich meine Mutter.
Then I hear my mother.
Not her name, not a cry for help — her laughter. Her laughter from the second floor of the building behind me, which I would have recognised in a hundred other situations and which here, in this context, I first do not place. Then place. Then place wrongly: she is not laughing out of joy. She is laughing because fear sometimes sounds like that.
Ich mache den Fehler, mich umzudrehen.
I make the mistake of turning round.
A cultist I had not seen — from the north, not out of the conduit — is twelve metres behind me. I turn back. Too slowly. The blow strikes my shoulder, not my head — his arm, no tool, he has no weapon, he is a man in dirty clothes with a Chaos sigil painted on his forehead — but the blow is enough to put me off balance.
Ich falle.
I fall.
On the ground I think: this is the moment. I do not see the aquila in my pocket, but I feel its weight against my left breast, and I do not think of the Emperor and not of my faith and not of my death. I think of my mother, who made the aquila sign with her hands when I was eight, and who has since called the barracks every week to ask whether I am still alive, and to whom I have never said that I feel her calls to be the only constant conviction that all this has a reason.
The cultist raises his hand for the second blow.
Er kommt nicht.
It does not come.
What comes is a sound I had never heard live in my life, only in training films and vox transmissions: the deep, metallic rush of an armour servo being activated. The sound of weight moving that is too heavy for normal flesh.
Then a shadow so large that it covers a section of the night.
Ich denke: Space Marine.
I think: Space Marine.
I do not think it as relief. I think it as a fact, as a classification, as the placing of something into a context that until then had existed only in theory. Reality is larger than theory. That is the first thing I think.
The second is: he heard my mother. He was somewhere up there, had a line on the northern cultist, and did not fire because my mother was standing behind the cultist. He waited until the cultist moved, and then delivered a blow that carried the cultist three metres through the night.
He looks down at me. The visor of his power armour is dark — I see no eyes. I see an eagle on the shoulder plate, and beneath it a colour hard to place in the glow of the fire.
"Get up," he says. No explanation. No apology for the shock he has caused. Only: get up.
Ich stehe auf.
I get up.
"Nordwesten", sagt er. "Größere Gruppe. Du hast die Flanke."
"North-west," he says. "Larger group. You have the flank."
Nicht: Kannst du? Nicht: Bitte. Nur: Du hast die Flanke.
Not: can you? Not: please. Only: you have the flank.
I cycle the power cell and go in the direction of north-west.
Behind me, through the building, I hear that my mother has stopped laughing.
4. Was Glauben kostet
4. What faith costs
I had never understood faith as comfort.
That sounds cynical, and perhaps it is a little, but I mean it seriously: faith as comfort — as the warm feeling that someone watches over one, that everything has a meaning, that death is no ending — I have never felt that. In the Lower Ring one learns early that comfort is a form of lie one affords oneself when one can afford it.
Was ich gespürt habe, war etwas anderes.
What I have felt was something else.
Faith as structure. As the scaffold one stood on when nothing else stood. Not: the Emperor will protect me. Rather: the Emperor is the reason why protecting is a category that exists. The reason why rules are not arbitrary. The reason why I, when I fight, do not fight for myself — because fighting for oneself in this world is a way of going quickly in a direction that does not end well.
I fight for something that is greater than I am.
That is faith. Not the certainty of paradise. Rather the decision that there are things more significant than one's own survival, and that this decision has to be made voluntarily, every day, sometimes several times a day.
Tonight this faith costs me a broken rib.
I reach the north-west section and find thirty cultists pressing through an old factory entrance into a residential block. No way through from the front — too many, too narrow. So by the flank: through the side alley, over the metal fence that is rusted and cuts, onto the roof of the neighbouring building. From up there I have the alley.
Zwölf Schüsse. Sieben treffen.
Twelve shots. Seven hit. The other five are either cover or the movement error on my side, when the roof gives way beneath me — a section of corrugated iron that had been waiting for years — and I half break through and catch myself on the steel frame with my right elbow.
Die Rippe bricht beim Aufprall. Ich höre es.
The rib breaks on impact. I hear it.
That too is a kind of faith: the faith that pain is not an argument. That I keep firing even when every breath presents a bill I would rather not see.
Ich schieße weiter.
I keep firing.
The cultists withdraw. Not because I stopped them alone — the noise has alerted other Guardsmen, I hear lasgun fire from east and south. But I am the reason the north-west route is closed, and that is enough.
When I climb down from the roof it is shortly before five in the morning.
When I come back to Cross Street nine, my mother is sitting on the steps before her front door. She has made the aquila sign with her hands. Not for me — I see that her eyes are closed, that she is doing it for herself, for something she has just prayed.
Ich setze mich neben sie. Sage nichts.
I sit down beside her. Say nothing.
After a while she opens her eyes.
"Du hast Blut am Arm."
"You have blood on your arm."
"Gebrochene Rippe. Kein Problem."
"Broken rib. No problem."
"Lüg deine Mutter nicht an."
"Do not lie to your mother."
"Es ist ein Problem. Aber kein tödliches Problem."
"It is a problem. But not a fatal problem."
She looks at me, and in her face is what was always in it: exhaustion and something that is nevertheless not giving up. Then she lays a hand on my face, as she did when I was eight, and says: "The Emperor saw you."
Ich sage: "Ja, Mutter."
I say: "Yes, mother."
I believe that. I believe it in the way I have always believed it: not as comfort, but as structure. As the scaffold one stands on when nothing else stands.
Das reicht.
That is enough.
TEIL II: DER FELDWEBELPART II: THE SERGEANT
5. Siebenundzwanzig Jahre
5. Twenty-seven years
Sergeant Tobas Kern hatte in siebenundzwanzig Jahren Dienst bei der Astra Militarum dreizehn verschiedene Planeten gesehen.
Sergeant Tobas Kern had seen thirteen different planets in twenty-seven years of service with the Astra Militarum.
None of them was good. That was no complaint — he had volunteered at twenty, knowing that the Astra Militarum did not organise holiday travel. He had understood it as an exchange: his life, his time, his health, against the privilege of being part of something greater than a single man on a single planet.
Dreizehn Planeten.
Thirteen planets. Seven battles, of which three counted as such — the other four were operations that had other words, so that the casualty reports came out shorter. Four wounds, one of which had changed the knee for good; he limped now with an evenness that looked like a manner of walking, though it was not one. Twenty-three men and women dead under his command, of whom he knew every name.
Das war sein Archiv.
That was his archive.
He did not keep it out of sentimentality. He kept it because a sergeant who did not know the names of his dead was no sergeant but an administrator. And administrators made mistakes that sergeants did not make: they sent people into positions that would kill them without knowing why.
Tobas Kern had learned that when he was twenty-seven. He had learned it by making a mistake that had cost a man his life, a man who had recognised too late that he had misjudged Kern's situation report, and who had died because Kern had not asked the right questions.
Der Name des Mannes war Jelvan Mossart.
The man's name was Jelvan Mossart.
Er war der erste Name im Archiv.
He was the first name in the archive.
Now, at forty-seven, sitting on a cot in the fourth barracks hall of Base Voss-South, Tobas Kern heard the order and closed his eyes. For a moment. Only a moment.
Dann betete er.
Then he prayed.
That was the other thing he had learned in twenty-seven years. Not from the catechism of the Ecclesiarchy — he had read that once and never opened it again, because he found that faith needed no instruction manual. From the simple, repeated experience that there were moments in which one's own mind did not suffice, and that it was then good to turn to something greater than one's own mind.
The Emperor was dead or sleeping or far away. That was known. But that did not mean that he did not hear.
Tobas Kern betete: Lass mich heute keinen neuen Namen ins Archiv schreiben.
Tobas Kern prayed: let me write no new name into the archive today.
Dann stand er auf.
Then he stood up.
6. Die Jungen im Trupp
6. The young men in the squad
His squad was eight men, of whom six were under thirty.
That was nothing unusual — the 7th Calixis Regiment was, like all regiments of the Astra Militarum, an organism composed of constant loss and constant replacement, and replacement always came young. But the sight of these six had something that struck Tobas Kern every time he looked closely.
Not pity. He had learned to separate pity from what was useful. What struck him was something more precise: the knowledge that he was the only one in the room who knew what was coming, and that he had to handle that knowledge carefully.
To pass on too much of it paralysed. To give too little sent people unprepared into situations from which they did not come back.
He had not fully understood the border in twenty-seven years. He was approaching it.
"Fall in," he said, and his squad stood up — including the young Guardsman Vassar, whom he had been watching for three months and whom he could not yet fully place. Vassar did everything right. That was the problem: whoever did everything too rightly often did it out of fear, and fear was a poor compass.
"We get Cross Street three to seven," said Kern. "Southern section. Muri, Dellar, Vassar: vanguard. I am in the middle. Senne, Gross, Vraks: rearguard." He paused. "Cultists do not fight like us. They are not soldiers. That does not make them harmless — it makes them unpredictable. You do not look at the one who is loudest. You look at the one who is quiet."
Vassar hob kurz die Hand. "Feldwebel. Was wenn—"
Vassar briefly raised a hand. "Sergeant. What if—"
"Was wenn was?"
"What if what?"
"Was wenn es Zivilisten gibt. Im Kampfgebiet."
"What if there are civilians. In the combat zone."
Tobas Kern sah ihn an.
Tobas Kern looked at him. The question was good. It was the kind of question that showed that the one asking had really asked it, not out of fear of the mistake, but out of understanding that the mistake was a possibility.
"Then you hold before the shot," he said. "Even if that costs time. We do not fight for annihilation. We fight for restoration." He made a short pause, in which he noticed that he had said something he had not fully planned to say, but that was true. "The Emperor protects the living. We are the tool for it."
Vassar nickte.
Vassar nodded. Nothing dramatic — a short nod that said: I have heard that. I carry that with me.
Kern brachte seinen Trupp nach draußen.
Kern took his squad outside.
7. Querstraße Vier
7. Cross Street Four
Cross Street four was one of the old streets in the South Ring that still dated from the first settlement phase of Hive Voss, before the city had grown upward and the streets below had vanished into the shadow of the upper storeys.
That meant: low ceilings, narrow alleys, buildings raised over one another through centuries of improvisation whose structure no Imperial architect would ever have approved. It also meant: every wall a possible ambush, every window a field of view, every door a question.
Tobas Kern mochte keine Straßen, die Fragen waren.
Tobas Kern did not like streets that were questions.
They found the first group of cultists at the corner of Cross Street four and Way seven — eleven men and women who had broken open the door of a residential building and were about to go inside. Why? Kern asked himself that for a moment, and then he saw: the building had a cellar, and the cellar had shafts connected to the conduit system. A connecting route. The cultists did not need streets; they had a network of their own.
He gave the signs. Silent, precise: Muri to the left, Dellar onto the roof of the corner building, Vassar stays with me.
Das Feuergefecht dauerte weniger als eine Minute.
The firefight lasted less than a minute.
Neun Kultisten fielen.
Nine cultists fell. Two fled into the conduit. Kern let them — two fleeing cultists in a tunnel were no tactical problem, and to send six men below ground was a tactical problem.
"Sauber", sagte Muri.
"Clean," said Muri.
"Sauber", bestätigte Kern.
"Clean," Kern confirmed.
That was the word one used. Not: good. Not: won. Clean — the place was free of enemies, the place could be moved through. That was language that had learned to be exact.
Dann: Vassar.
Then: Vassar.
Vassar hatte seinen Schuss gehalten.
Vassar had held his shot.
Kern had seen it — the young Guardsman had had a clear line on a cultist, and he had not fired, because in the background, half hidden behind a corner, a woman had been standing who was no cultist. She had not moved; she was either frozen with fear or she knew her way about well enough to know that keeping still survives.
Vassar had not hit the cultist. The cultist had run on two metres, and then Muri had got him.
Kern trat neben Vassar. "Du hast richtig gehandelt."
Kern stepped over to Vassar. "You acted rightly."
Vassar sah ihn an.
Vassar looked at him. Something in his face was what stands in the faces of young soldiers after the first real firefight: not triumph, not shock, but the slow adjustment of the self-image to a new reality. I have done this now. That is me now.
"Er wäre trotzdem—"
"He would still have—"
"Muri hat ihn erwischt. Du hattest eine Zivilperson im Hinterfeld. Du hast richtig gehandelt." Kern machte eine kurze Pause. "Das nächste Mal gehst du etwas weiter links. Dann hättest du den Winkel gehabt."
"Muri got him. You had a civilian in the back field. You acted rightly." Kern made a short pause. "Next time you go a little further left. Then you would have had the angle."
That was sergeant's language: you acted rightly meant you acted ethically rightly. Next time you go a little further left meant tactically you made a mistake, and I am showing you how not to repeat it.
Vassar verstand beide Ebenen.
Vassar understood both levels. That was the first moment in which Kern thought that something would come of Vassar.
Sie gingen weiter durch Querstraße vier.
They went on through Cross Street four.
8. Der Chaos Space Marine
8. The Chaos Space Marine
He heard it before he saw it.
The striding. The deep, rhythmic striding of something too heavy for normal ground. The creak of servo joints, the hum of a force field, the metallic smell of weapons that had taken decades of corruption into themselves.
Tobas Kern knew that sound from two of the seven battles. He knew it from the information folders one gave to sergeants so that they would know what to do if it came to that.
Was zu tun war: Deckung. Fernwaffen. Ziel: Gelenke und Visier. Bloß kein offenes Feld.
What was to be done: cover. Ranged weapons. Target: joints and visor. Above all no open ground.
He called it over the vox, quietly and precisely, while he directed his squad into the cover of three heavy brick pillars that had survived the earthquake of '871 and would therefore probably survive the present problem as well.
The Chaos Space Marine came round the corner of Cross Street four.
He was of the kind that no longer had a colour — or rather: he had had colours, and the colours had dissolved over decades of corruption and reassembled into something that could no longer be clearly assigned to any Legion. His helm had been half replaced by a fleshy growth that pulsed. The weapon in his hand was a meltagun that had been modified in a way no Imperial weaponsmith had ever sanctioned.
Er war allein.
He was alone.
That was the problem with Chaos Space Marines: they sometimes came alone, because they needed no reinforcement, because a single one of them was enough to finish a squad of eight men if the squad had no plan.
Tobas Kern hatte einen Plan.
Tobas Kern had a plan.
The plan was not good. It was the best that was possible in twenty seconds.
"Vassar," he said quietly over the vox. "You run left through the side passage. You remember the shaft we saw?"
"Ja, Feldwebel."
"Yes, Sergeant."
"That leads to the level below. You go down and come up again from the south. If you can, you fire at the rear left knee joint — that is the weak point in old power armour when it is not maintained, and this is old power armour." He paused. "If you cannot, you make noise anyway. That is enough too."
"Und ihr?"
"And you?"
"Wir halten ihn vorn beschäftigt."
"We keep him busy at the front."
Eine kurze Stille. Dann: "Ja, Feldwebel."
A short silence. Then: "Yes, Sergeant."
Vassar verschwand in den Seitengang.
Vassar disappeared into the side passage.
What Tobas Kern then did was what he had learned in twenty-seven years: he did the necessary without the conviction that it would work, and with the decision that it had to be done whether it worked or not.
Er trat aus der Deckung.
He stepped out of cover.
The Chaos Space Marine saw him at once. Of course — a warrior two and a half metres tall in corrupted power armour had better senses than any normal human being. Kern saw himself in that gaze: an old, slightly limping sergeant with standard flak armour and a lasgun that against power armour was about as effective as a stone against a wall.
"Ich bin Tobas Kern", sagte er. Laut. Unnötigerweise laut — der Marine konnte ihn problemlos hören. "Feldwebel. 7. Calixis-Regiment, Astra Militarum."
"I am Tobas Kern," he said. Loudly. Unnecessarily loudly — the Marine could hear him without trouble. "Sergeant. 7th Calixis Regiment, Astra Militarum." He held the lasgun at hip height, not at the shoulder. "This street is Imperial."
Why that? Because every second in which the Marine spoke with him — or did not speak, that too was communication — was a second in which Vassar was climbing through the shaft.
Der Marine sagte nichts. Er hob das Schmelzgewehr.
The Marine said nothing. He raised the meltagun.
The first shot struck the wall three metres to Kern's left. Deliberately — a warning shot, or an assessment, or simply the play of a being that had lived long enough in the Warp to play with terror as others play with coins.
Kern trat einen Schritt vor.
Kern took a step forward.
That was the maddest thing about what he did — he stepped forward, because what was behind him needed time, and because a sergeant who steps back shows a squad that stepping back is an option.
"Diese Straße ist imperial", sagte er wieder.
"This street is Imperial," he said again.
The second shot would have hit him. It would have hit him if at that moment a shot had not come from the south, from the section of street behind the Chaos Space Marine, which scored no hit but was loud enough to turn the Marine for a moment.
And in that moment there fell, from another side — from the cover of the wall pillars, from Muri and Dellar and Senne and the others who had waited for Kern's sign — the most concentrated thing that seven lasguns can do to one point.
Ein Schuss traf das Visier.
One shot struck the visor.
It was no fatal shot. But a Chaos Space Marine without a visor was a Chaos Space Marine who could not see for three seconds.
Drei Sekunden waren genug.
Three seconds were enough.
The Marine withdrew. Not elegantly — a withdrawal that included pain, a withdrawal that meant: there is more resistance here than expected. He disappeared round the corner.
Tobas Kern wartete zehn Sekunden.
Tobas Kern waited ten seconds.
Dann ließ er das Lasergewehr sinken.
Then he let the lasgun sink.
Vassar came out of the side passage, out of breath, dirt on his arm. "I did not hit him."
"Ich weiß. Du hast ihn abgelenkt." Kern sah ihn an. "Das war der Auftrag."
"I know. You distracted him." Kern looked at him. "That was the task."
"Aber ich—"
"But I—"
"Vassar." Meine Leute leben. Das ist ein Sieg."
"Vassar." No impatience, no sharpness. Only: Vassar. One word that meant: I see you, and what I see is enough. "The Marine is gone. My people are alive. That is a victory."
Vassar schluckte. Nickte.
Vassar swallowed. Nodded.
Kern looked at the street, at the scorch mark where the meltagun had struck the wall, at the section of Cross Street four that was clean now.
He thought of Jelvan Mossart, the first name in the archive.
Heute kam kein neuer Name dazu.
Today no new name was added.
He prayed it briefly and silently, standing, without closing his eyes, because sergeants did not close their eyes when they were not certain.
Then he called his squad together and they went on.
TEIL III: DER ERSTE KAMPFPART III: THE FIRST FIGHT
9. Warum ich hier bin
9. Why I am here
There is a question young soldiers ask themselves, and they usually ask it in moments that permit no answers.
I am asking it now, in the corridor of the barracks building, lasgun at my shoulder, with the smell of the smoke from the south in my nose and the feeling in my legs that only much later I shall classify as the tingle of readiness, instead of as what I think now: fear.
Warum bin ich hier?
Why am I here?
Not existentially — I know why I am with the Astra Militarum. My father was with the Astra Militarum. My elder brother was with the Astra Militarum and died on Iocanthos, on a day that has no date in the official records, because the official records of Iocanthine operations sometimes have no dates. I am with the Astra Militarum because it is the family I know, and because a family one can join is better than no family.
I am with the Astra Militarum because I wanted to avenge my brother.
That would be the most honest answer, and I say it to no one, because revenge is a poor reason and because Sergeant Kern — who for three months has looked at me as though he were seeing behind my motives and had not yet fully placed what he finds there — would not approve of revenge as a compass.
Er hat recht.
He is right.
I have known that he is right for about six weeks. Since an exercise in which he showed me what happens when one fights for a personal aim: one adapts the tactics to the aim instead of to reality. One sees the enemy one wants to fight, not the enemy standing in front of one. That is a mistake that is fatal.
Was kämpfe ich also für?
So what am I fighting for?
The answer I have been developing over the past weeks is: for the street. Not for an abstract idea, not for the Emperor as a concept, not for the Imperium as a structure — for the specific street in the specific city in which specific people live who are to go on living. For the right of those people to get up tomorrow morning and think whatever it is they think.
Das klingt klein.
That sounds small.
I believe the small is the beginning of the great.
10. Querstraße Drei
10. Cross Street Three
Wir erreichen Querstraße drei um 03:47 Uhr.
We reach Cross Street three at 03:47 hours.
The street is not what I had expected. In training one learns what cultists do — one learns their patterns, their procedures, the signs by which one recognises whether a building is compromised or not. That is all correct. It is also incomplete.
Was man nicht lernt: der Geruch.
What one does not learn: the smell.
Kultisten riechen anders.
Cultists smell different. Not because they are dirty — dirt I know, the Lower Ring often smells of dirt, and that is an honest smell. This is a different smell: sharp and sweetish at once, a chemical undertone that comes from a process I do not yet fully understand, but which has to do with warp exposure. Sera explained that to me once, in a break between two exercises: the Chaos taint leaves physical traces. One can smell them if one knows what to look for.
Ich suche jetzt danach.
I am looking for it now.
The street is quiet. Too quiet — no civilians, no fleeing people, no lights in the windows. The silence has the quality of holding back.
Ich melde das auf dem Vox. "Feldwebel, Querstraße drei: leer. Ich rieche was."
I report it over the vox. "Sergeant, Cross Street three: empty. I smell something."
Eine kurze Pause. "Beschreib."
A short pause. "Describe."
"Chemisch. Süßlich. Nicht Rauch."
"Chemical. Sweetish. Not smoke."
Eine längere Pause. Dann: "Ich kenne das. Druck dich an die rechte Wand. Muri kommt zu dir."
A longer pause. Then: "I know that. Press yourself to the right-hand wall. Muri is coming to you."
Bevor Muri kommt, beginnt der Angriff.
Before Muri comes, the attack begins.
Not out of a house, not out of a window. Out of the drain cover in the middle of the street, which is flipped open and out of which fifteen cultists spill like a liquid that has found the wrong container. They are equipped with knives and improvised weapons, no firearms — that is the kind of close combat cultists prefer when they know that the enemy has lasguns.
I am alone on this side of the street.
That is the moment in which I notice that my hands are not shaking.
That surprises me. I thought my hands would shake. In all the simulations, in all the dreams I have had since my brother, my hands shake. But now, in the real moment, they are steady.
I take cover behind a pillar, load a new power cell, and begin to fire.
The first shot: left, outermost cultist, to pull the field apart. The second: middle, because the group is forming a formation even if they do not know it. The third: right, because the right wing is thicker.
I do not count the hits. I count the energy: change the cell after nine shots.
Muri kommt um 03:49 Uhr.
Muri comes at 03:49 hours.
Zusammen halten wir die Straße.
Together we hold the street.
11. Der Moment vor dem Tod
11. The moment before death
I say that literally: the moment before death. Not a metaphor.
It happens at 04:15 hours, in a rear yard behind Cross Street three, in which Muri and I have cornered the last four cultists of a group that has withdrawn through a cellar door. The rear yard is narrow — five by eight metres, high walls, a grating of some pipes overhead, a plasteel well in the middle.
I do not see the cultist waiting behind the well.
I do not see him because I am looking at the three I do see, and because the rear yard is dark enough for the movement of the fourth to disappear in my field of vision.
Muri sieht ihn.
Muri sees him.
Muri calls to me, over the vox, with my name — "Vassar, left!" — and I turn, but I turn in the wrong direction, because out of the corner of my eye I see a shadow to the left and the shadow comes from a pipe and the cultist is standing to the right.
Der Kultist ist nah. Drei Meter. Er hat ein Messer, kein Schussgewehr.
The cultist is close. Three metres. He has a knife, no firearm.
In the time I need to correct the direction, he is upon me.
What follows is not the elegant fight described in manuals. It is a confusion of elbows and arms, the clatter of the knife on my flak armour — flak armour is not made to stop blades, but it slows them — the weight of another body pressing against mine, and the lasgun I cannot use because we are too close together.
I do what Sergeant Kern taught in training: I do not fire. I seize the wrist, I turn, I create distance.
Der Kultist stolpert. Einen Schritt. Zwei.
The cultist stumbles. One step. Two.
In diesem Moment sehe ich sein Gesicht.
In that moment I see his face.
Er ist jung. Jünger als ich. Sechzehn, vielleicht siebzehn.
He is young. Younger than me. Sixteen, perhaps seventeen. His face does not yet have the complete transformation I have seen in the others — no discolourations, no false proportions. He is a boy from the Lower Ring who found a sign in a cellar doorway, who was promised something.
The decision I make is the decision Sergeant Kern taught me: I do not fire on one who is no longer moving.
He is no longer moving. He has stumbled and lies with his back against the plasteel wall and looks at me with eyes in which the Chaos fire still burns, but beneath it — beneath it is something I know, because I know it: the face of a person who has just understood that he is in a situation from which there is no good door.
Ich halte das Lasergewehr gerichtet.
I keep the lasgun levelled.
Er hebt die Hände.
He raises his hands.
That takes ten seconds. In those ten seconds I think of my brother. I do not think of the way he died, because I do not know that. I think of the way he lived: with the conviction that one distinguished people by what they did, not by what one had been told about them.
Ich rufe auf dem Vox: "Gefangener in Hinterhof B. Brauche Eskortierung."
I call over the vox: "Prisoner in rear yard B. Require escort."
Eine Pause.
A pause.
Dann Feldwebel Kern: "Verstanden."
Then Sergeant Kern: "Understood."
❧
❧
Muri looks at me oddly while we wait for the escort.
"Du hättest schießen können", sagt er.
"You could have fired," he says.
"Ich weiß."
"I know."
"Er hat dich angegriffen."
"He attacked you."
"Ich weiß."
"I know."
Eine kurze Pause. "Warum nicht?"
A short pause. "Why not?"
I think. Not for long — the answer is there, I only have to check whether it is the right one. "Because he is not a soldier. He is a boy someone told something to." I look at the cultist, who now sits quietly and stares at the ground. "Perhaps that is remediable."
Muri sagt eine Zeit lang nichts.
Muri says nothing for a while.
Dann: "Das ist ein teurer Gedanke."
Then: "That is an expensive thought."
"Perhaps," I say. "But Sergeant Kern said: we do not fight for annihilation. We fight for restoration."
Muri nickt. Kein weiteres Kommentar.
Muri nods. No further comment.
Das Schweigen ist der beste Kommentar.
The silence is the best comment.
12. Freiheit
12. Freedom
I understand freedom differently now from before this morning.
Freedom had been for me a concept I knew from my home: the freedom one had when one earned enough money to move to the Middle Ring. Freedom from bad smells and broken lights. The negative freedom — not the freedom to something, but the freedom from something.
What I have experienced this morning is the other kind.
The freedom to make a decision that is not the easiest decision. The freedom to keep the lasgun lowered. The freedom that only exists if one exercises it — if one decides that what one does is not determined by circumstances but by what one holds to be right.
That is no victory in the sense that I have made some great decision of battle. It is a small victory over the part of me that wanted to act out of revenge and fear and the will not to think.
The brother I was here for — I believe he would have done it that way.
Not because he was especially wise. But because he always said: a soldier who has stopped distinguishing is no longer a soldier.
At 06:30 hours the section is declared cleared.
I stand in Cross Street three and watch the sun come up — or what counts as sun on Hive Voss: a brightening of the industrial vapour that seeps yellowish and diffuse through the upper levels. It is no beautiful sun. It is a sun that fights to get through the layers.
Ich finde das passend.
I find that fitting.
Feldwebel Kern kommt zu mir. Sagt nichts.
Sergeant Kern comes over to me. Says nothing. Stands beside me and looks at the same brightening in the haze.
After a while: "You worked well this morning."
Das ist das einzige, was er sagt.
That is the only thing he says.
Das ist genug.
That is enough.
TEIL IV: DREI KERZENPART IV: THREE CANDLES
13. Was jeder nicht weiß
13. What none of them knows
It was the field medic Devos who brought them together.
Not deliberately — Devos had no dramatic intentions. He had been a medic with the 7th Calixis Regiment for twenty years, he was thirty kilograms heavier than his body actually allowed, he drank too much Imperial firewine in his free hours, and he had a bandage inventory to which he devoted himself with the care of an archivist. He brought people together because that was his profession and because the assembly point after the fighting was where he had set up his station.
Trooper Mira Dahl came first — three ribs, broken, the left shoulder dislocated, scratches on both forearms from the moment on the corrugated-iron roof. She sat down on the treatment bench and let Devos chart the damage without watching how he did it, because that set off a reaction in her that she did not classify as pain, but that came from roughly the same direction.
Sergeant Tobas Kern came ten minutes later — the knee had given out in the pursuit movement against the Chaos Space Marine, no break, but the inflammation he had been ignoring for three years had decided this morning not to be ignored any longer. He sat down beside Dahl without looking at her, because he was occupied with formulating his report, which was waiting on the vox strip, and because a sergeant who came to a treatment bench without having his report finished was not a well-functioning sergeant.
Guardsman Elio Vassar came last — no physical injury, but the combat protocol required documentation in the case of close-quarters contact, and close-quarters contact he had had. He sat down on the other side of the bench and waited until Devos would raise his pen, and in that waiting time he sat still and looked at his hands.
Devos worked from Mira to Tobas to Elio, wrote numbers into his inventory, issued warnings such as "this will hurt" and "I am saying this now so that you do not start", and filled the silence between the three of them in the way medics fill silence: with the sound of professional precision.
Das Schweigen war nicht unangenehm.
The silence was not uncomfortable.
It was the silence of people who had all experienced the same weather in the same night and had not yet found out whether the others had seen it that way too.
Mira, when Devos turned away to fetch a new bandage, looked briefly at Kern. The sergeant sitting there and speaking into the vox strip had the face of someone who had carried something heavy this morning and who would not talk about it, but who did not pretend that it had been light.
Kern, when Devos moved from Mira to him, noticed briefly the young Guardsman on the other side. The Guardsman had that stillness he had already noticed after the Cross-Street-four operation — no performance, no self-consciousness. He simply sat there and was present, and that was the sign of someone to whom the first real fight had added something rather than taken something away.
Vassar, as he looked at his hands, thought of the young cultist who had raised his hands. He thought that somewhere in this building the escort was processing him, and he did not know what came afterwards, whether rehabilitation was possible or whether there was no such thing, and he had the feeling that he wanted to know it without being able to force it.
Then Devos raised his pen and asked Mira: "Address for the injury report?"
Mira sagte: "Querstraße neun, Unterring."
Mira said: "Cross Street nine, Underring."
Devos schrieb.
Devos wrote.
Kern sah auf. "Unterring?"
Kern looked up. "Underring?"
"Ja." Sie sah ihn an. "Du kennst den Unterring?"
"Yes." She looked at him. "You know the Underring?"
"Meine erste Frau war aus dem Unterring. Lange her."
"My first wife was from the Underring. Long ago."
Mira nickte.
Mira nodded. A short nod that said: that was not what I expected, but it is an honest piece of information, and I value honest pieces of information.
Dann Devos, zu Vassar: "Heimatadresse?"
Then Devos, to Vassar: "Home address?"
Vassar sagte: "Keine aktuelle.
Vassar said: "None current. Was on the street when the regiment came."
Kern sah ihn an. "Auf der Straße seit wann?"
Kern looked at him. "On the street since when?"
"Zwei Jahre. Seit mein Bruder..."
"Two years. Since my brother..." He let it stand unfinished, in the way one left sentences that brought their own completeness with them.
Kern looked at the vox strip, then at Vassar, then at the vox strip. "What was his name?"
"Garen Vassar."
"Garen Vassar."
Eine kurze Pause.
A short pause.
"Iocanthos?"
"Iocanthos?"
Vassar sah auf. "Ja."
Vassar looked up. "Yes."
Kern laid the vox strip on the bench beside him. "I knew someone who was on Iocanthos. Not the same deployment — a year earlier. He told me about the campaign." He paused. "Your brother died on a night that has no date. That I know. I know no more."
It was no answer. It was the honest version of: I have no answer, but I take your question seriously.
Vassar schluckte. "Das ist mehr, als ich bisher hatte."
Vassar swallowed. "That is more than I had before."
Mira, who had heard all of this, laid the aquila of hardened glass on the bench between all three of them. Not deliberately — a gesture she had not planned. The aquila caught the light of the treatment lamp and threw small reflections onto the ceiling.
Niemand sagte etwas.
No one said anything.
Devos, who had the medic's instinct not to break a silence when the silence was the right thing, went on writing in his inventory.

Was keiner der drei wusste:
What none of the three knew:
That Mira Dahl had seen that morning the same Space Marine who had intervened at four different places in the Underring that night — at Cross Street nine, at Cross Street twelve, at a factory entrance, and at the point where Sergeant Kern's squad had met the Chaos Space Marine. He had been alone, had not asked for coordination, and his Chapter symbol had permitted no clear identification in the poor light.
That Sergeant Kern, in the moment when he stepped out of cover and said "this street is Imperial", had not only bought the time for Vassar — he had also given Mira Dahl three minutes to secure the north-west section, without which she would not have come.
That the young cultist whom Vassar had spared in the rear yard had, during his processing, given out a piece of information that had shown the regimental command the cultists' main conduit — the route through the conduit system through which two hundred people had been evacuated that night who would otherwise have been in the fire of the main attack.
Einer dieser zweihundert Menschen war Mira Dahls Mutter.
One of those two hundred people was Mira Dahl's mother.
Das wussten sie alle nicht.
None of them knew that.
They knew only: it was a morning that felt different from other mornings.
Mira took the aquila back and put it in her pocket.
Kern took the vox strip and spoke the last sentence of the report.
Vassar looked at his hands, which were not shaking.
Devos sagte: "Fertig. Der nächste."
Devos said: "Finished. Next."
The sun over Hive Voss went on fighting through the industrial haze.
Epilog: Der Abend nach dem MorgenEpilogue: The Evening After the Morning
In the barracks of the 7th Calixis Infantry Regiment, Base Voss-South, there was a small room officially listed as a meditation room and in which in fact there was a small picture of the Emperor that someone had hung up in the twenties and that had not been taken down since, because none of the successive commanders had seen a reason to take it down.
The picture was not particularly well painted. The Emperor on the Throne, golden light, the wings of the aquila in the background — the standard motif one found in every Imperial building if one searched long enough.
Drei Kerzen brannten davor.
Three candles burned before it. Not by order — no one had commanded it. Three different people, at three different times of day, had lit a candle, for three different reasons that were all different and that all said the same thing.
The first candle had been lit by Trooper Mira Dahl, in the early afternoon, after she had been discharged from treatment and before she had gone to her mother in the Underring. She had said no words to it. She had lit the candle, taken the aquila out of her pocket, looked at it briefly, and put it back.
The second candle had been lit by Sergeant Tobas Kern, in the late afternoon, after the final report, after the walk through the streets that were clean now. He had prayed briefly — two sentences, no ceremony — and then he had gone, the knee worse than in the morning, the report handed in.
The third candle had been lit by Guardsman Elio Vassar, in the evening, alone, after a long silence. He had sat for a while before the poor picture and had not prayed in the traditional sense, but had thought about what faith meant when one had not been raised in it but had grown into it.
At the end he had said: "I believe the morning meant something. I do not yet know what. But I am certain that it meant."
Then he had lit the candle and gone.
Die drei Kerzen brannten.
The three candles burned.
In the poor picture that someone had hung up in the twenties, the Emperor sat on the Throne with the golden light, and the light of the three candles threw new shadows on the old painting, shadows that moved and changed according to how the flames moved.
So all three fates looked, from a certain angle, like one picture.
Sie wussten das nicht.
They did not know that.
Sie mussten es nicht wissen.
They did not have to know it.
Es reichte, dass sie es getan hatten.
It was enough that they had done it.
