A thing without provenance is scrap. A thing with provenance is goods.

Bei Menschen ist es genau umgekehrt, und ich habe zweiundzwanzig Jahre gebraucht, um das zu bemerken, obwohl es täglich an meinem Laden vorbeifuhr.

With people it is exactly the other way round, and it took me twenty-two years to notice, although it drove past my shop daily.

Mein Laden liegt auf Ebene siebenunddreißig, im Sechsten Sektor, hinter einer Tür, die aussieht, als führe sie in einen Pumpenraum. Das ist Absicht. My shop is on level thirty-seven, in the Sixth Sector, behind a door that looks as though it leads into a pump room. That is deliberate. Whoever is looking for me finds me; whoever is not looking for me should not find me, and the middle between the two is the only place on this moon where a man in my trade grows old.

That is not the same as fencing, even if it is the same charge number. A fence buys what was stolen and sells it on, and what interests him is the price. What interests me is the route. A switch arm from a conveyor is a switch arm; a switch arm from a conveyor that was buried in Shaft Four in 792 and whose cohort was subsequently written off entire is something else. Not more valuable — different. One can prove something with it.

Deshalb nennen sie mich den Kurator. Sie halten sich dabei für witzig, wie immer, wenn Leute einem einen Namen geben.

That is why they call me the Curator. They think themselves witty in doing so, as people always do when they give someone a name.

Two hundred metres of cable with works markings from a hall that has been listed as burnt down for six hundred years. Forty unused breath filters, year of manufacture correct, issuing point false. A case with three hundred and eleven service tags of the dead, sorted by cohort. A book that is not a book but the transcribed occupancy roll of Severance Hall Nine for eleven years, written by a man who was paid for it and who later regretted it.

And, because someone will ask: nothing that breathes. I have never dealt in people.

That is a lie. I did it once. It stands at the end of this record, in the place where it belongs, and whoever wants to know it beforehand should stop reading.

What I sell is seldom the object. It is the information attached to it.

Eine Frau kommt, weil ihr Bruder in einer Abrechnung fehlt, und will wissen, ob er gefallen ist oder abgehauen. Ein Vorarbeiter kommt, weil ihm eine Lieferung fehlt, und will wissen, wer sie hat. Ein Techpriester kommt — selten, aber er kommt — und will wissen, was in einer Halle stand, bevor die Halle etwas anderes war.

A woman comes because her brother is missing from an accounting, and wants to know whether he fell or ran. A foreman comes because a delivery is missing, and wants to know who has it. A tech-priest comes — rarely, but he comes — and wants to know what stood in a hall before the hall was something else.

Für jede dieser Fragen gibt es irgendwo einen Beleg. Auf einer Schmiedewelt gibt es für alles einen Beleg; das ist der ganze Betriebszweck. Der Beleg liegt nur meistens an einer Stelle, an die zu kommen die Verwaltung nicht vorgesehen hat, und dazwischen stehe ich.

For every one of these questions there is a document somewhere. On a forge world there is a document for everything; that is the entire purpose of the operation. Only the document usually lies in a place the administration did not provide for reaching, and between the two stands me.

I take money for it, when someone has money.

Mostly no one has money.

An example, so that one understands what I live on.

Vor vier Jahren kam ein Vorarbeiter aus der Gießerei Neun und wollte wissen, wer ihm zwei Fässer Kühlöl abgezogen hat. Er hatte einen Verdacht, und der Verdacht war ein Junge, den er nicht mochte, und er wollte von mir die Bestätigung.

Four years ago a foreman from Foundry Nine came and wanted to know who had siphoned off two barrels of cooling oil from him. He had a suspicion, and the suspicion was a boy he did not like, and he wanted the confirmation from me.

Ich habe die Bestätigung nicht verkauft. I did not sell him the confirmation. Instead I told him, for thirty marks, that the barrels had never been in his hall: the delivery marking he had in his book belonged to a batch that had been issued four days earlier in Sector Two, and in Sector Two sits his own brother-in-law.

He left angry. Two months later he came back and brought me a case of filters.

Das ist der Beruf. Nicht: dem Kunden geben, was er will. Sondern: ihm geben, was stimmt, und ihn wütend gehen lassen, denn ein Kunde, der wütend geht und wiederkommt, kommt sein Leben lang wieder, und ein Kunde, dem man einmal etwas Falsches verkauft hat, kommt einmal.

That is the trade. Not: give the customer what he wants. But: give him what is correct, and let him leave angry, for a customer who leaves angry and comes back comes back all his life, and a customer to whom one has once sold something false comes once.

Deshalb prüfe ich alles zweimal, bevor ich es sage.

That is why I check everything twice before I say it.

Deshalb ist das, was auf den folgenden Seiten steht, auch kein Geständnis. Ich gestehe nichts. Ich lege einen Vorgang zusammen, so wie ich es immer tue, und wenn er am Ende gegen mich ausgeht, dann geht er gegen mich aus, und das ändert an der Reihenfolge der Belege nichts.

That is also why what stands on the following pages is not a confession. I confess nothing. I am assembling a case, as I always do, and if it goes against me in the end, then it goes against me, and that changes nothing about the order of the documents.

II. Die KundinII. The Client

Sie kam an einem Dienstag, in der dritten Schicht, und das war der erste Fehler, weil in der dritten Schicht auf Ebene siebenunddreißig niemand unterwegs ist, der nicht dorthin gehört, und sie gehörte sichtbar nicht dorthin.

She came on a Tuesday, in the third shift, and that was the first mistake, because in the third shift nobody is about on level thirty-seven who does not belong there, and she visibly did not belong there.

Hedda Ossek. Neununddreißig. Schmelzkohorte Sechs, Reinigungsdienst, was heißt: Sie hat zwanzig Jahre lang das weggeräumt, was beim Gießen danebengeht. Ihre Hände waren an den Kanten heller als in der Mitte. Das haben sie alle.

Hedda Ossek. Thirty-nine. Smelting Cohort Six, cleaning service, which means: for twenty years she cleared away what goes astray in the casting. Her hands were lighter at the edges than in the middle. They all are.

Sie hatte kein Geld. Ich sah es an der Art, wie sie hereinkam — Leute mit Geld sehen sich um; Leute ohne Geld sehen einen an.

She had no money. I saw it in the way she came in — people with money look around; people without money look at you.

„Sie finden Sachen", sagte sie.

"You find things," she said.

„Ich finde, wo Sachen herkommen. Das ist ein Unterschied, und der Unterschied ist der Preis."

"I find where things come from. That is a difference, and the difference is the price."

I have twenty-two years in this trade, and I have heard that sentence perhaps six hundred times, and I have an answer to it that is quick and injures no one.

"He is none of those," she said. "He has been struck from the roll."

Ich habe sie gebeten, das zu wiederholen.

I asked her to repeat that.

Ausgetragen ist kein Wort aus dem Werkerjargon. Es ist ein Wort aus der Verwaltung, und es bedeutet, dass ein Name aus einer laufenden Liste genommen wurde, ohne dass er in einer anderen erschienen ist. Nicht gestorben, nicht verurteilt, nicht versetzt. Ausgetragen. Man kriegt das zu sehen, wenn man in der Kohortenschreibstube arbeitet, oder wenn man, wie Hedda Ossek, zwanzig Jahre lang um sechs Uhr am selben Schwarzen Brett vorbeigeht und irgendwann jeden Buchstaben darauf kennt.

Struck from the roll is not a word from the workers' jargon. It is a word from the administration, and it means that a name has been taken off a running list without appearing on another. Not died, not sentenced, not transferred. Struck from the roll. One gets to see that if one works in the cohort record office, or if one, like Hedda Ossek, walks past the same notice board at six o'clock for twenty years and eventually knows every letter on it.

„Sie haben die Liste gelesen."

"You read the list."

„Ich lese sie seit zwanzig Jahren." Sie zog ein Stück Papier heraus, das aus einem Rationsbuch stammte, und darauf stand in einer sehr sorgfältigen, sehr ungeübten Schrift: Ossek, Marten, Kohorte Sechs, Gießerei Zwei — ausgetragen, 12. „Am Zwölften. Er ist am Neunten das letzte Mal nach Hause gekommen und hat sich rasiert."

"I have read it for twenty years." She pulled out a piece of paper that came from a ration book, and on it, in a very careful, very unpractised hand, stood: Ossek, Marten, Cohort Six, Foundry Two — struck from the roll, 12th. "On the twelfth. He came home for the last time on the ninth and shaved."

„Rasiert."

"Shaved."

„Er hat sich vierzehn Jahre nicht rasiert. Am Neunten hat er sich rasiert, und am Zwölften stand er nicht mehr auf der Liste, und es ist jetzt achtzehn Tage her."

"He had not shaved in fourteen years. On the ninth he shaved, and on the twelfth he was no longer on the list, and it is now eighteen days ago."

Ich habe sie gefragt, was er in den letzten Monaten gemacht hat.

I asked her what he had been doing in the last months.

Es ist die Frage, mit der ich anfange, seit zweiundzwanzig Jahren, und sie klingt nach Anteilnahme und ist eine Ermittlung. Menschen ändern ihr Verhalten, bevor sie verschwinden, und sie merken es selbst nicht, und die, die mit ihnen leben, merken es und halten es für nichts.

It is the question I begin with, and have for twenty-two years, and it sounds like sympathy and is an investigation. People change their behaviour before they disappear, and they do not notice it themselves, and those who live with them notice it and take it for nothing.

She listed it without having to think, which means she had listed it before, for herself, at night.

In the spring he had begun oiling his tools, although they stay at the works and do not belong to him.

Er hat im Sommer die Kammer gestrichen. Eine Kammer auf Ebene vierzig, viereinhalb Quadratmeter, und er hat vier Schichten dafür geopfert und Farbe dafür getauscht, die er sich nicht leisten konnte.

In the summer he had painted the chamber. A chamber on level forty, four and a half square metres, and he had sacrificed four shifts for it and traded for paint he could not afford.

Er hat aufgehört, mit ihr über die Rente zu reden, die es für Schmelzkohorten ohnehin nicht gibt und über die alte Leute unten trotzdem reden, so wie andere über das Wetter.

He had stopped talking with her about the pension that does not exist for smelting cohorts anyway and about which old people down here talk regardless, the way others talk about the weather.

Und er hat im Herbst zweimal gefragt, ob sie mit ihrer Schwester in Sektor Neun wieder rede.

And in the autumn he had asked twice whether she was speaking with her sister in Sector Nine again.

„Und?" habe ich gesagt.

"And?" I said.

„Ich rede nicht mit meiner Schwester."

"I do not speak with my sister."

„Jetzt schon."

"You do now."

Sie hat mich angesehen, und ich habe gesehen, wie sie es in derselben Sekunde begriff und wieder wegschob, weil es sonst nicht auszuhalten gewesen wäre. Ein Mann, der wissen will, ob seine Frau danach jemanden hat.

She looked at me, and I saw how she grasped it in the same second and pushed it away again, because otherwise it would not have been bearable. A man who wants to know whether his wife will have somebody afterwards.

Ich habe in diesem Moment gewusst, was passiert war. Ich sage das nicht, um schlau zu wirken. Ich sage es, weil alles Folgende auf diesem einen Umstand beruht: Ich habe es am zweiten Satz gewusst, und ich habe es ihr nicht gesagt, und dafür gab es einen Grund, und der Grund war nicht Rücksicht.

I knew in that moment what had happened. I do not say that to look clever. I say it because everything that follows rests on this one circumstance: I knew it at the second sentence, and I did not tell her, and there was a reason for that, and the reason was not consideration.

Der Grund war, dass ich es nicht beweisen konnte, und dass ich in zweiundzwanzig Jahren gelernt habe, nichts zu verkaufen, was ich nicht belegen kann.

The reason was that I could not prove it, and that in twenty-two years I have learned to sell nothing I cannot document.

"What do you want from me?"

„Ich will wissen, wo er ist." Sie faltete das Papier wieder zusammen, sehr genau, an denselben Kanten. „Und wenn er das ist, was ich glaube, dass er ist, dann will ich wissen, welcher."

"I want to know where he is." She folded the paper together again, very precisely, along the same edges. "And if he is what I think he is, then I want to know which one."

III. Der PreisIII. The Price

Es gibt auf Kel-Vantor drei Wege, auf denen ein Mensch aufhört, ein Mensch zu sein, und alle drei enden in demselben Gehäuse.

There are three ways on Kel-Vantor by which a person stops being a person, and all three end in the same casing.

Der erste ist der Tod. Der ist billig und wird gut dokumentiert; Tote gehen in die Schmelze und in ein Verzeichnis, und das Verzeichnis ist öffentlich, weil ein Toter niemandem mehr etwas kostet.

The first is death. That one is cheap and well documented; the dead go into the smelt and into a register, and the register is public, because a dead man costs no one anything any more.

Der zweite ist der Ritus der Aussonderung, den unten alle den Schweigeschnitt nennen. Der trifft, wer als kontaminiert eingestuft ist. Vier Tage Bedenkzeit, dann Halle Neun, dann ist die Person weg und der Körper arbeitet weiter. Auch das wird dokumentiert. Ein Schweigeschnitt ist ein Urteil, und Urteile werden aufgeschrieben, sonst wären sie keine.

The second is the Rite of Severance, which everyone down here calls the silence-cut. It falls on whoever is classified as contaminated. Four days of reflection, then Hall Nine, then the person is gone and the body works on. That too is documented. A silence-cut is a sentence, and sentences are written down, otherwise they would not be sentences.

Der dritte ist der Letzte Dienst. Freiwillig. Für Leute, die zu krank oder zu verbraucht sind, um weiterzumachen, und die statt eines gewöhnlichen Todes noch einmal Nützlichkeit wählen. Sieben Tage Frist der Besinnung, weil der Petent den Weg selbst wählt und man ihm drei Tage mehr zubilligt als einem Verurteilten. Halle der Letzten Pflicht, zwei Ebenen über Halle Neun, mit Kerzen und einer besseren Decke.

The third is the Last Service. Voluntary. For people too ill or too spent to go on, and who choose usefulness once more instead of an ordinary death. Seven days of the Span of Reflection, because the petitioner chooses the way himself and one grants him three days more than a condemned man. Hall of Last Duty, two levels above Hall Nine, with candles and a better ceiling.

Und der Letzte Dienst wird nicht öffentlich verzeichnet.

And the Last Service is not publicly recorded.

Das ist keine Bosheit. Es ist Rücksicht, und zwar echte: Ein Mann, der sich freiwillig meldet, soll seine Familie nicht in einer aushängenden Liste finden lassen, was er getan hat. Es ist die einzige Stelle in diesem ganzen Apparat, an der jemand an Gefühle gedacht hat.

That is not malice. It is consideration, and genuine consideration at that: a man who volunteers should not have his family find out from a posted list what he has done. It is the only place in this whole apparatus where someone thought about feelings.

Sie ist deshalb auch die einzige Stelle, an der man einen Menschen vollständig verschwinden lassen kann, ohne eine einzige Vorschrift zu brechen.

It is therefore also the only place where one can make a person disappear entirely without breaking a single regulation.

„Der Preis", sagte ich.

"The price," I said.

„Ich habe vierzig Marken."

"I have forty marks."

„Das ist kein Preis, das ist ein Trinkgeld." Ich habe mich hingesetzt, weil ich, wenn ich rechne, sitze. „Frau Ossek, ich will Ihnen erklären, was Sie kaufen. Nicht, was es kostet, sondern was es ist. Wenn Ihr Mann tot ist, kriegen Sie es umsonst; das steht im Verzeichnis, gehen Sie in die Kohortenschreibstube und fragen Sie. Wenn er einen Schweigeschnitt hat, kriegen Sie es von mir für vierzig Marken, denn ich habe die Belegungsliste der Halle Neun und da steht er drin oder nicht. Beides ist billig."

"That is not a price, that is a gratuity." I sat down, because when I calculate, I sit. "Frau Ossek, I want to explain to you what you are buying. Not what it costs, but what it is. If your husband is dead, you get it for nothing; that stands in the register, go to the cohort record office and ask. If he has had a silence-cut, you get it from me for forty marks, for I have the occupancy roll of Hall Nine and he is in it or he is not. Both are cheap."

„Und das Dritte."

"And the third."

„Das Dritte gibt es nicht in Papier, das an einer Wand hängt. Das Dritte steht in der Aussonderungsverwaltung, in einem Vorgang, der nicht ausgehängt wird, und um da hineinzusehen, brauche ich einen Menschen, der da drinsitzt."

"The third does not exist on paper that hangs on a wall. The third stands in the Severance Administration, in a case that is not posted, and to look into that I need a person who sits in there."

„Dann fragen Sie ihn."

"Then ask him."

„Der fragt zurück", sagte ich. „Das ist das Problem an dieser Verwaltung, Frau Ossek. Sie nimmt kein Geld. Sie hat noch nie Geld genommen. Was sie nimmt, ist die einzige Ware, die ich nicht führe."

"He asks back," I said. "That is the problem with this administration, Frau Ossek. It takes no money. It has never taken money. What it takes is the one commodity I do not stock."

Sie hat es sofort verstanden. Ich habe sie deshalb später sehr gemocht, was mir nicht geholfen hat.

She understood at once. I liked her very much for that afterwards, which did not help me.

„Einen Namen", sagte sie.

"A name," she said.

IV. Kohorte Sieben, Sektor CIV. Cohort Seven, Sector C

Vor meiner Tür läuft ein Förderband.

A conveyor belt runs past my door.

Nicht direkt davor — vier Meter weiter, in einem Gang, der Sektor C mit den Schmelzbahnen verbindet, und weil die Tür meines Ladens aus Blech ist und weil ich nachts nichts anderes zu hören habe, kenne ich den Takt. Elf Sekunden Lauf, drei Sekunden Halt, elf Sekunden Lauf. Bei Schichtwechsel neun und vier.

Not directly in front of it — four metres further, in a passage that connects Sector C with the smelting lines, and because the door of my shop is sheet metal and because I have nothing else to listen to at night, I know the rhythm. Eleven seconds run, three seconds halt, eleven seconds run. At shift change nine and four.

An diesem Band arbeitet die Fördereinheit der Kohorte Sieben. Sechs Servitoren. Sie heben, was von der Bahn fällt, zurück auf die Bahn. Das ist die ganze Arbeit. Sie tun sie seit Jahren, in derselben Reihenfolge, und wenn einer ausfällt, kommt binnen zwei Wochen ein neuer, weil an Aussonderungen kein Mangel ist.

The conveyor unit of Cohort Seven works at that belt. Six servitors. They lift back onto the line what falls off it. That is the whole work. They have done it for years, in the same order, and if one fails, a new one comes within two weeks, because there is no shortage of severances.

The third from the left is a man I sold.

Ich schreibe das hier hin und mache keinen Satz daraus, der es besser aussehen lässt. Er hieß Dietrich Kroll. Er war ein Dieb, und er war ein schlechter, was ihn mir sympathisch machte, weil schlechte Diebe reden und gute nicht. Er hat mir drei Jahre lang Kleinteile gebracht und dafür genommen, was ich ihm gegeben habe, ohne zu handeln.

I write that down here and make no sentence of it that makes it look better. His name was Dietrich Kroll. He was a thief, and he was a bad one, which made him likeable to me, because bad thieves talk and good ones do not. For three years he brought me small parts and took for them what I gave him, without haggling.

Es steht in Abschnitt VIII, wie es dazu kam. Hier gehört nur hin, dass er vier Meter von meiner Tür entfernt arbeitet, dass ich ihn in neun Jahren nicht ein einziges Mal angesehen habe, und dass ich seinen Platz in der Reihe kenne, ohne hinzusehen, so wie man weiß, wo im eigenen Zimmer der Tisch steht.

It stands in Section VIII how it came about. Here belongs only that he works four metres from my door, that in nine years I have not looked at him once, and that I know his place in the row without looking, the way one knows where the table stands in one's own room.

People will ask why I did not move.

Ich habe darüber nachgedacht. Ebene einundvierzig war frei, zweimal, und beide Male habe ich abgesagt, und beide Male habe ich mir einen geschäftlichen Grund dafür ausgedacht, und beide Gründe waren gut.

I have thought about it. Level forty-one was free, twice, and both times I declined, and both times I invented a business reason for it, and both reasons were good.

Das ist der Beruf: Man weiß, wo etwas herkommt. Man weiß es auch, wenn man es lieber nicht wüsste, denn das Wissen ist keine Sammlung, die man abstellen kann; es ist die Art, wie man in einen Raum hineinsieht. Wer den Weg eines Dinges kennt, hört nicht auf, ihn zu kennen, weil er woanders wohnt.

That is the trade: one knows where something comes from. One knows it even when one would rather not, for the knowing is not a collection one can set aside; it is the way one looks into a room. Whoever knows the route of a thing does not stop knowing it because he lives elsewhere.

Und wenn ich weggegangen wäre, dann hätte es aufgehört, ein Beleg zu sein, und wäre eine Erinnerung geworden.

And if I had gone away, it would have stopped being a document and become a memory.

Über die Arbites muss ich etwas sagen, sonst hält man mich für mutiger, als ich bin.

About the Arbites I must say something, or people will hold me braver than I am.

Auf einer Schmiedewelt sind die Arbites nicht die Herren. Die Priesterschaft ist der Herr; die Arbites sind geduldet, wie ein Gast, den man nicht ausladen kann, weil er auf einem alten Vertrag sitzt. Sie haben eine Wache auf Ebene zwölf, sechzehn Mann, und sie kümmern sich um das, was die Kohorten nicht selbst regeln wollen: Diebstahl über einer bestimmten Summe, Totschlag unter Werkern, und alles, was mit Gegenständen zu tun hat, deren Herkunft heikel ist.

On a forge world the Arbites are not the masters. The priesthood is the master; the Arbites are tolerated, like a guest one cannot uninvite because he sits on an old contract. They have a station on level twelve, sixteen men, and they concern themselves with what the cohorts do not want to settle themselves: theft above a certain sum, manslaughter among workers, and everything to do with objects whose provenance is delicate.

Damit sind wir bei mir.

Which brings us to me.

Arbitrator Vogt kam alle zwei Monate. Er kam nie in Rüstung, er kam nie zu zweit, und er kaufte immer etwas. Meistens Kleinkram — einmal einen Satz Dienstmarken, einmal ein Stück Kabel, das er offensichtlich nicht brauchte. Er zahlte anständig und er ließ sich Zeit.

Arbitrator Vogt came every two months. He never came in armour, he never came in pairs, and he always bought something. Mostly small things — once a set of service tags, once a piece of cable he obviously did not need. He paid decently and he took his time.

That is not negligence. An Arbitrator who buys out and shuts down a fence on level thirty-seven has afterwards no fence on level thirty-seven, and the goods flow all the same, only he no longer knows where. An Arbitrator who leaves him standing and buys a cable every two months has a source.

There is one room on this moon into which no one looks: not the Arbites, not the cohorts, not the families. And that is the one room the priesthood goes into every day."

He picked the cable up again and paid.

At the door he turned round.

"And if you go in, Sorr — then you do not come out again empty-handed. That is not a warning. That is a finding about rooms of that kind."

VI. Der AdeptVI. The Adept

Die Aussonderungsverwaltung sitzt auf Ebene neun, was von unten aus gesehen weit oben ist, und sie besteht aus vier Räumen und einem Menschen, den ich brauchte.

The Severance Administration sits on level nine, which seen from below is a long way up, and it consists of four rooms and one person I needed.

Er heißt Corvin Aeth. Er war damals einunddreißig oder zweiunddreißig, was für die Stelle jung ist. And then something happened that took me four days to place: he did not answer at once.

Corvin Aeth always answers at once. He has a memory like a register, and when he does not know something, he says in the same second that he does not know it. Instead he laid his hands on the table, left beside right, and breathed once.

"Why are you asking."

"His wife is asking."

There is a case under that name. I signed it myself. And I may not tell you in which hall."

We looked at each other for a while. His ear twitched, which does not suit an adept. On the table to his left lay a stack, out of the top of which a sheet protruded on which stood a line: Application stage four — Renke, Smelting Cohort Four — and the rest was covered.

„Was verlangt die Verwaltung", sagte ich.

"What does the administration require," I said.

„Die Verwaltung verlangt nichts. Ich verlange nichts." Er zog den Stapel zu sich, weg von meinem Blick, ordentlich, ohne Eile. „Aber Sie fragen nach einem Vorgang aus der Halle der Letzten Pflicht, und Vorgänge daraus werden nicht ausgehängt. Wer sie sehen will, braucht ein dienstliches Interesse. Ein Interesse ist dienstlich, wenn es an einem anderen Vorgang hängt."

"The administration requires nothing. I require nothing." He drew the stack towards himself, away from my gaze, neatly, without haste. "But you are asking after a case from the Hall of Last Duty, and cases from it are not posted. Whoever wants to see them needs an official interest. An interest is official if it is attached to another case."

„Sagen Sie es gerade heraus, Adept. Ich bin nicht empfindlich."

"Say it straight out, Adept. I am not sensitive."

Ich habe den Abend danach in meinem Laden gesessen und gerechnet, und ich schreibe die Rechnung hier auf, weil ich möchte, dass jemand sie nachprüft.

I sat in my shop that evening and calculated, and I write the calculation down here because I want someone to check it.

Was Aeth verlangte, war kein Mord.

What Aeth demanded was not murder.

Das ist wichtig. Er wollte keinen Menschen ausgesondert sehen, der es nicht ohnehin würde. Er wollte einen Antrag. Einen freiwilligen Antrag auf den Letzten Dienst, von einem Menschen, der die Aufnahmekriterien erfüllt (Schmiedelunge Stufe vier oder vergleichbarer Verschleiß), und der ihn ohne mein Zutun vielleicht in zwei Monaten gestellt hätte, oder nie, oder zu spät.

That is important. He did not want to see a person severed who would not be anyway. He wanted an application. A voluntary application for the Last Service, from a person who met the acceptance criteria (forge-lung stage four or comparable wear), and who without my involvement might have submitted it in two months, or never, or too late.

Das ist der ganze Betrug, und er ist erbärmlich klein: Ich sollte jemandem, der sowieso stirbt, die Entscheidung vorziehen.

That is the whole fraud, and it is pitifully small: I was to bring forward the decision of someone who is dying anyway.

I laid it out for myself that way six or seven times that evening, and every time it came out even, and the coming out even was the suspicious part of it. When a calculation comes out too cleanly, one has left out a line.

The line I had left out was the term.

A condemned man has four days. A petitioner has seven. On those three days of difference hangs the entire claim that the two rites are not the same — that the one is a sentence and the other a choice. Three days. That is all that lies between Hall Nine and the Hall of Last Duty, apart from two storeys and a few candles.

And if I bring a man's application forward by two months, then I do not take his life. I take from him the two months in which he could have changed his mind, and that is the difference I am selling.

There is a second line I had left out, and that one is worse.

I opened the whole calculation with the point that Aeth demands no murder. That is true. What I had not written down is that in this calculation I am myself the entry that changes.

Nine years ago I gave a name because someone had put a rope round my neck. That is self-defence, at any rate I have booked it that way for nine years, and I have never questioned the entry.

This time no one is putting anything round my neck. This time it is a piece of information for a woman who has forty marks and brings me soup.

Wenn ich es also wieder tue, dann ist die Buchung von damals falsch gewesen. Nicht weil sich etwas Neues herausgestellt hätte, sondern weil ein Mann, der es zweimal tut, beim ersten Mal nicht gezwungen war, sondern geeignet.

So if I do it again, then the entry from back then was false. Not because something new has come to light, but because a man who does it twice was not compelled the first time but suited.

Das ist die Sorte Gedanke, die man nicht zu Ende denkt, wenn man ihn im Sitzen denkt und draußen ein Band läuft.

That is the sort of thought one does not think through to the end when one thinks it sitting down and a belt is running outside.

She did not mean it as a bribe. That is the bad thing about such people. She had heard that I live alone, and had concluded from that that I eat nothing warm, and in that she was right.

"Is he dead?"

„Nein."

And there I made my mistake, the only real one in this whole business, and it did not consist in my selling a name later. It consisted in my telling her the truth in that moment without being able to document it.

Ein Techniker aus der Kohorte Vier brachte mir einen Datenkern. Handtellergroß, Mechanicus-Gehäuse, älter als die Kennungen darauf, was bei Kel-Vantor nichts Besonderes ist — hier ist die Hälfte aller Gehäuse älter als ihre Kennung.

A technician from Cohort Four brought me a data core. Palm-sized, Mechanicus casing, older than the markings on it, which on Kel-Vantor is nothing special — here half of all casings are older than their markings.

Er wollte achtzig Marken. Ich habe ihm sechzig gegeben und war zufrieden.

He wanted eighty marks. I gave him sixty and was satisfied.

Vier Tage später kam ein Mann in Kittel und ohne Kennmarke und erklärte mir freundlich, dass dieser Kern aus einer Grabung im Sechsten Schacht stammte, dass die Grabung eingestellt worden sei, dass alles aus ihr als kontaminiert geführt werde, und dass der Besitz eines kontaminierten Gegenstandes auf Kel-Vantor nicht als Hehlerei behandelt wird, sondern als Kontamination.

Four days later a man came in a smock and without an ident-tag and explained to me in a friendly manner that this core came from an excavation in the Sixth Shaft, that the excavation had been discontinued, that everything from it was listed as contaminated, and that possession of a contaminated object on Kel-Vantor is not treated as fencing but as contamination.

Kontamination ist keine Anklage. Kontamination ist eine Feststellung. Man kann sich gegen eine Anklage verteidigen.

Contamination is not a charge. Contamination is a finding. One can defend oneself against a charge.

Ich hatte drei Tage.

I had three days.

Ich habe in diesen drei Tagen fünf Dinge versucht, von denen vier nichts wert waren. Das Fünfte war Dietrich Kroll.

In those three days I tried five things, four of which were worth nothing. The fifth was Dietrich Kroll.

Kroll hatte den Kern angefasst. Das war wahr. Er hatte ihn zweimal in der Hand gehalten, weil er ihn für mich vom Techniker abgeholt hatte, und er hatte dabei gefragt, was das sei, und ich hatte gesagt, das sei nicht seine Sache.

Kroll had touched the core. That was true. He had held it in his hand twice, because he had collected it from the technician for me, and he had asked what it was, and I had said that was not his business.

Ich bin zu den Arbites gegangen und habe gesagt, wer den Kern gebracht hat.

I went to the Arbites and said who had brought the core.

Ich habe nicht gelogen. Ich möchte, dass das genau so dasteht, weil es der Kern der Sache ist: Ich habe kein falsches Wort gesagt. Ich habe eine wahre Auskunft zu einem Zeitpunkt gegeben, an dem sie einem Menschen das Leben gekostet hat, und ich habe genau gewusst, was sie kostet, weil ich das Verzeichnis der Halle Neun besser kenne als die Verwaltung.

I did not lie. I want that to stand exactly so, because it is the heart of the matter: I did not say one false word. I gave a true piece of information at a moment when it cost a man his life, and I knew exactly what it cost, because I know the register of Hall Nine better than the administration does.

Vier Tage Bedenkzeit. Dann Halle Neun.

Four days of reflection. Then Hall Nine.

Der Techniker, der mir den Kern gebracht hat, arbeitet heute noch. Nach ihm hat niemand gefragt. Das ist nicht Ironie, das ist Verfahren: Die Arbites nehmen den, den man ihnen nennt, und suchen nicht weiter, weil eine Feststellung mit einem Namen abgeschlossen ist.

The technician who brought me the core still works today. No one asked after him. That is not irony, that is procedure: the Arbites take the one you name them and look no further, because a finding is closed with a name.

Kroll hat in den vier Tagen nach mir geschickt.

Kroll sent for me during the four days.

Dreimal. Ich weiß es genau, weil dreimal derselbe Junge kam, ein Läufer aus Sektor D, der von Kroll zwei Marken bekommen hatte und deshalb den Auftrag ernst nahm.

Three times. I know it exactly, because the same boy came three times, a runner from Sector D who had got two marks from Kroll and therefore took the errand seriously.

Beim ersten Mal sagte er: „Der Kroll lässt fragen, ob Sie ihm was besorgen können." Das war am zweiten Tag. Ich habe gesagt, ich hätte gerade nichts.

The first time he said: "Kroll asks whether you can get him something." That was on the second day. I said I had nothing at the moment.

The second time he said: "Kroll asks whether you will come." That was on the third. I said I had work to do.

The third time, on the fourth day, the boy said nothing, but only stood there, and then he said: "He said I should wait until you say yes."

That is the place where an explanation is expected of me, and I have none that is worth anything. I was not afraid. It would have cost me nothing; the chambers of reflection are on level eleven and are not guarded, because a condemned man who runs draws the sentence onto his family and therefore does not run.

It took me three days to talk myself into believing that I did not have to look for anyone, because one had long since been there.

Auf Aeths Tisch hatte ein Bogen gelegen, und oben stand: Antrag Stufe vier — Renke, Schmelzkohorte Vier. Ich habe das gesehen, wie man alles sieht, ohne es zu wollen, und ich habe daraus in drei Tagen ein ganzes Gebäude gebaut. Der Antrag lag schon da. Ich musste ihn nicht erzeugen. A sheet had lain on Aeth's table, and at the top stood: Application stage four — Renke, Smelting Cohort Four. I saw it the way one sees everything without wanting to, and out of it I built a whole edifice in three days. The application was already there. I did not have to produce it. I only had to name it, and then I would have my case and Aeth his, and no one would have done anything that would not have happened without me.

"The Renke application has been lying there nineteen days," he then said. "The term is seven. Do you know why it is still lying there?"

„Weil sie ihn dreimal zurückgezogen und dreimal neu gestellt hat." Er zog den Bogen hervor und drehte ihn nicht zu mir, sondern legte nur die Hand daneben, als sei das Papier ein Tier. „Beim ersten Mal nach zwei Tagen. Beim zweiten Mal nach fünf. Beim dritten Mal nach einem. Sie ist jetzt im vierten Anlauf, Tag drei."

"Because she has withdrawn it three times and submitted it three times." He drew the sheet out and did not turn it towards me, but only laid his hand beside it, as though the paper were an animal. "The first time after two days. The second time after five. The third time after one. She is now on her fourth attempt, day three."

"Then it has been submitted."

"It has been submitted and it is worth nothing." Aeth looked at me. "I do not need an application, Sorr. I have applications. I have twelve applications, and nine of them are like this one: submitted, withdrawn, submitted. What I need is a case that goes to its end, for only a case that goes to its end is opened, and only to an opened case does an official interest attach."

I do not write that to make it look better. I write it because it is the proof that I knew what I was doing. A man with nothing wrong in mind goes once.

Level fifty-three is a residential level, which means: passages the width of two people, doors four metres apart, and over it all the note of the air circulation that one no longer hears after two days and that after twenty years goes with one into sleep. Notices hang on the walls. Shift plans, ration adjustments, once a month the cohort list.

She was perhaps forty-eight and looked sixty, which is normal at stage four. She breathed in two stages — a short draw, then a shorter one, like someone climbing a step while speaking.

Man kann als Werker nicht in die Halle der Letzten Pflicht; sie ist kein öffentlicher Raum, und wer dort steht, hat entweder ein Amt oder liegt auf dem Tisch. Aber ich hätte hingehen können, wenn ich gewollt hätte. As a worker one cannot enter the Hall of Last Duty; it is not a public room, and whoever stands there either holds an office or lies on the table. But I could have gone if I had wanted to. I have three routes into that level, and I calculated all three of them that day, the way one calculates a journey one will not take.

Instead I worked.

In the afternoon I shut the shop, which I never do.

And at four o'clock I sat down and began to calculate where she was just then. That is an activity I do not recommend.

At four is the dressing. I know that because I have had Aeth's schedule for six years in a folder I once bought for twelve marks and never needed. At four twenty the sheet is presented a second time so that the petitioner can make changes, and the adept hands over the stylus. At half past four the litany begins. It lasts eleven minutes, and after that it takes about another twenty, and then the case is what in the administration is called a closed case.

Ich habe an diesem Nachmittag angefangen, es wissen zu wollen, und es war zu spät, und das ist die Strafe für Leute in meinem Beruf: Man bekommt die Neugier immer erst dann, wenn die Auskunft nichts mehr nützt.

To be notified. Two lines. Renke had a chamber with two beds, one of which had stood empty and neatly made for months, and I had not asked whose it had been, because one does not have to ask everything. That afternoon I began to want to know, and it was too late, and that is the punishment for people in my profession: one gets the curiosity only when the information is no longer any use.

I read the list twice that evening. The second time not because I was looking for anything.

I read it because it was the only thing still in existence from the conversation in her chamber, and because in twenty-two years I have learned that a document is the only thing that does not grow smaller when one looks at it.

That is not true, by the way. I write it down because I believed it then.

XII. Die zweite ListeXII. The Second List

Aeth hat mich zwei Tage warten lassen. Ich habe das für Verwaltung gehalten.

Aeth kept me waiting two days. I took that for administration.

Als ich am dritten Tag hinaufkam, lag der Vorgang Ossek nicht auf dem Tisch. Auf dem Tisch lag ein Heft.

When I came up on the third day, the Ossek case was not on the table. On the table lay a notebook.

„Setzen Sie sich", sagte er.

"Sit down," he said.

Ich habe mich nicht gesetzt. Ein Mann in meinem Gewerbe setzt sich nicht, wenn ihm jemand einen Stuhl anbietet, der ihm vorher nie einen angeboten hat.

I did not sit down. A man in my trade does not sit down when someone offers him a chair who has never offered him one before.

„Sie führen Listen", sagte Corvin Aeth. „Das ist bekannt. Die Belegungsliste der Halle Neun, elf Jahre, abgeschrieben von einem Mann, der dafür bezahlt wurde und es später bereut hat. Er heißt Wenzel und lebt noch, und ich weiß es, weil er es mir gebeichtet hat, was bei uns kein Sakrament ist, sondern eine Meldung."

"You keep lists," said Corvin Aeth. "That is known. The occupancy roll of Hall Nine, eleven years, transcribed by a man who was paid for it and later regretted it. His name is Wenzel and he is still alive, and I know it because he confessed it to me, which with us is not a sacrament but a report."

„Und?"

"And?"

"I keep one too."

He did not open the notebook. He only laid his hand on it, as he had laid his hand beside Renke's sheet.

Das erste bedeutet, dass der Petent von sich aus gekommen ist und nicht gewankt hat. Das zweite bedeutet, dass er gewankt hat und trotzdem gekommen ist. Und das dritte bedeutet, dass jemand mit ihm gesprochen hat."

"For six years," he said. "Every case of the Hall of Last Duty gets a second mark from me. Not in the case file — here. There are three marks. The first means the petitioner came of his own accord and did not waver. The second means he wavered and came anyway. And the third means that someone spoke with him."

Ich habe eine Weile nichts gesagt.

I said nothing for a while.

"How many have the third."

"In six years one hundred and nineteen out of four hundred and seven." He did not take his hand away. "It is not an accusation, Sorr. It is written nowhere who spoke, and I do not ask it either. Mostly it is a foreman who needs a place. Sometimes a son. Twice it was a husband."

„Warum führen Sie das."

"Why do you keep it."

Und da hat Corvin Aeth, der beim Zuhören nicht blinzelt, zum ersten Mal in neun Jahren etwas gesagt, das nicht nach einer Bestellnummer klang.

And there Corvin Aeth, who does not blink while he listens, said for the first time in nine years something that did not sound like an order number.

„Weil die Verwaltung sagt, es gebe zwei Riten, und der Unterschied sei die Freiwilligkeit. Und weil ich seit sechs Jahren an diesem Tisch sitze und weiß, dass die Freiwilligkeit an einhundertneunzehn Stellen so aussieht, dass jemand im richtigen Moment im Zimmer stand." Er hat auf das Heft gesehen. „Wenn das stimmt, dann sind es nicht zwei Riten. Dann ist es einer mit zwei Fristen, und der Unterschied sind drei Tage und ein paar Kerzen. Ich kann das niemandem sagen. Ich kann es nur zählen."

"Because the administration says there are two rites, and that the difference is the voluntariness. And because I have sat at this table for six years and know that the voluntariness looks, in one hundred and nineteen places, like somebody standing in the room at the right moment." He looked at the notebook. "If that is so, then they are not two rites. Then it is one rite with two terms, and the difference is three days and a few candles. I cannot tell anyone that. I can only count it."

„Und was machen Sie mit der Zahl?"

"And what do you do with the number?"

„Nichts", sagte er. „Genau wie Sie mit Ihren einhundertacht Blatt."

"Nothing," he said. "Exactly as you do with your one hundred and eight sheets."

Dann hat er das Heft weggelegt und den Vorgang Ossek hervorgeholt und ihn vor mich hingeschoben, und dabei hat er hinzugefügt, ohne den Ton zu ändern:

"Renke has the third mark. She is the one hundred and nineteenth. I do not tell you that to punish you. I tell you because you are the only person on this moon who understands what a complete list is worth, and because for six years I have had no one to whom I could show mine."

Ich habe an diesem Tag zum ersten Mal begriffen, warum er mich in neun Jahren nie gemeldet hat.

That day I understood for the first time why he had never reported me in nine years.

Two days later the Ossek case lay on the same table, and Aeth looked out of the window while I read. He did it for exactly four minutes. He did not sell it to me as a favour and I did not thank him.

Ossek, Marten. Schmelzkohorte Sechs, Gießerei Zwei. Vierundfünfzig Jahre. Befund: Schmiedelunge Stufe vier, bestätigt durch zwei Untersuchungen. Antrag auf Vollzug des Letzten Dienstes, eigenhändig, gestellt am Fünften.

Ossek, Marten. Smelting Cohort Six, Foundry Two. Fifty-four years. Finding: forge-lung stage four, confirmed by two examinations. Application for execution of the Last Service, in his own hand, submitted on the fifth.

Fünfter. Vollzogen am Zwölften. Sieben Tage, wie vorgeschrieben, keinen mehr und keinen weniger.

Fifth. Executed on the twelfth. Seven days, as prescribed, not one more and not one less.

Am Neunten, in der Mitte seiner Frist, ist er nach Hause gegangen und hat sich rasiert.

On the ninth, in the middle of his term, he went home and shaved.

Auf dem Bogen gibt es unten ein Feld. Es heißt Zu benachrichtigen und ist zwei Zeilen hoch, und in der Anleitung daneben steht, dass der Petent eine Person benennen kann, der nach Vollzug Mitteilung gemacht wird.

At the bottom of the sheet there is a field. It is called To be notified and is two lines high, and in the instruction beside it stands that the petitioner may name a person to whom notification is to be made after execution.

Marten Ossek hat es ausgefüllt.

Marten Ossek filled it in.

Er hat hineingeschrieben: Ossek, Hedda, Kohorte Sechs, Kammer 4114 — vollständig, mit Kammernummer, in einer sorgfältigen, ungeübten Schrift, die aussah wie die auf ihrem Zettel, weil Leute, die zusammen leben, irgendwann gleich schreiben.

He wrote in it: Ossek, Hedda, Cohort Six, Chamber 4114 — complete, with chamber number, in a careful, unpractised hand that looked like the one on her slip of paper, because people who live together eventually write alike.

Und dann hat er es durchgestrichen.

And then he struck it out.

Einmal, waagerecht, und daneben in dieselbe Zeile gesetzt: entfällt.

Once, horizontally, and set beside it in the same line: not applicable.

Aeth hat weiter zum Fenster hinausgesehen.

Aeth went on looking out of the window.

„Wann", habe ich gefragt.

"When," I asked.

„Was, wann?"

"When what?"

„Wann streicht man das durch. Beim Ausfüllen oder später."

"When does one strike that out. At the filling in or later."

Er hat es mir gesagt, ohne den Kopf zu drehen. „Der Bogen wird am ersten Tag ausgefüllt. Am letzten wird er dem Petenten noch einmal vorgelegt, damit er Änderungen anbringen kann. Die Änderungen macht er in der Halle, kurz vorher. Es ist der einzige Vorgang, bei dem die Verwaltung ein Papier zweimal zeigt."

He told me without turning his head. "The sheet is filled in on the first day. On the last it is presented to the petitioner once more so that he can make changes. He makes the changes in the hall, shortly beforehand. It is the only procedure in which the administration shows a paper twice."

„Also am Zwölften."

"So on the twelfth."

„Also am Zwölften", sagte Corvin Aeth. „Zwischen dem Ankleiden und dem Ritus. Ich stehe dabei. Ich reiche ihnen den Stift."

"So on the twelfth," said Corvin Aeth. "Between the dressing and the rite. I stand by. I hand them the stylus."

XIV. Das PapierXIV. The Paper

Hedda Ossek hat mir nicht geglaubt.

Hedda Ossek did not believe me.

I had reckoned she would weep. I had reckoned she would scream. For twenty-two years I have sold people bad information, and there are three or four ways it goes, and I know them all.

Twice she began to say something. The first time it became the beginning of But he — and then she stopped, because it struck her that every sentence beginning that way goes up against the paper and loses. The second time it was only a breath.

Dann hat sie gefragt, ob er dabei allein war.

Then she asked whether he had been alone.

I said no. An adept stands by, and the adept is always the same one, and he hands them the stylus.

XV. WelcherXV. Which One

She came once more a week later. It was the last time.

„Welcher ist er", sagte sie.

"Which one is he," she said.

Das ist die Frage, an der mein Gewerbe hängt. Nicht ob und nicht wo — welcher. Ein Servitor hat keine Kennung, die ein Mensch lesen kann; er hat eine Designation, und die steht in einer Zuteilungsliste, und Zuteilungslisten sind das Erste, was ich in diesem Beruf gelernt habe zu beschaffen, weil sie niemand für wichtig hält.

That is the question my trade hangs on. Not whether and not where — which one. A servitor has no marking a person can read; he has a designation, and that stands in an assignment roll, and assignment rolls are the first thing I learned in this profession to procure, because nobody holds them to be important.

Ich hätte sagen können, dass ich es nicht herausfinde.

I could have said that I could not find out.

Marten Ossek works on the charging line of the Smelting Cathedral, upper track, third position counted from the chute. One can get within six metres; above it runs a grated catwalk on which workers are permitted to pass, because a catwalk carries no prohibition of entry.

Ich habe es ihr gesagt. Position, Bahn, Uhrzeit.

I told her. Position, track, time of day.

People will perhaps now think that this is the one decent move in this record.

From above, the charging line looks like a clockwork in which one cog wears a smock. Four positions on the upper track, a grip every seven seconds, and the movements are not identical but uniform, which is something else: each still has his own way of gripping, because the conversion takes the body and not the shoulder he accustomed himself to over thirty years.

That is why she could recognise him. Not by the face — faces are under the hood. By the left shoulder, which he pulls a little higher than the right, because at twenty-four in Foundry Two he took a girder on the shoulder, which she had told me on the first evening without my having asked.

A servitor of the charging line lifts, turns, lets go. Seven seconds. He does not look up. He never looks up; in the conversion, sight is the first thing reduced to the necessary, because a gaze that wanders is a gaze that holds things up.

Nach elf Minuten ist sie gegangen.

After eleven minutes she left.

She did not call and did not wave and did not weep, and she did nothing I could have written down. She looked for eleven minutes at a man laying ore on a belt, and then she went back to her shift.

She never came to me again. I reckoned with it for two years.

XVI. Sektor CXVI. Sector C

Sechzehn Tage nach dem Vollzug an Renke kam eine neue Einheit in die Fördereinheit der Kohorte Sieben, Sektor C.

Sixteen days after the execution on Renke, a new unit came to the conveyor unit of Cohort Seven, Sector C.

Das ist nichts Besonderes. Ich habe im ersten Abschnitt geschrieben, dass binnen zwei Wochen Ersatz kommt, wenn einer ausfällt, und in diesem Fall war keiner ausgefallen, sondern die Bahn war erweitert worden, und Erweiterungen brauchen Personal, und Personal ist auf einer Schmiedewelt das Einzige, woran es nie mangelt.

That is nothing special. I wrote in the first section that replacements come within two weeks when one fails, and in this case none had failed, but the line had been extended, and extensions need personnel, and personnel is the one thing a forge world never lacks.

Ich habe die Zuteilungsliste am selben Abend geholt. Ich musste sie nicht suchen; ich hole sie jeden Monat, seit neun Jahren, aus Gründen, die in Abschnitt VIII stehen.

I fetched the assignment roll that same evening. I did not have to look for it; I fetch it every month, and have for nine years, for reasons that stand in Section VIII.

There is a rule in this trade one finds written down nowhere, because it goes without saying: one does not collect documents against oneself.
