Der Mann auf meinem Tisch hieß Kellec, war seit vier Tagen tot und wusste nichts davon. Ich sah keinen Grund, es ihm zu sagen.

The man on my table was called Kellec, had been dead for four days and knew nothing about it. I saw no reason to tell him.

Seine Leber hatte aufgehört. Nicht plötzlich, wie es bei einem Treffer geschieht, sondern in der langsamen, beleidigten Art eines Organs, das über Jahre zu viel gebeten wurde. Ich hatte ihm drei Wochen gegeben. Er war bei sechzehn Tagen, und die Haut über seinem Brustbein hatte jene Farbe angenommen, die man nur ein einziges Mal lernen muss.

His liver had stopped. Not suddenly, as happens with a hit, but in the slow, affronted manner of an organ that has been asked too much over years. I had given him three weeks. He was at sixteen days, and the skin over his breastbone had taken on that colour one has to learn only once.

„Wie lange noch", fragte er.

"How much longer," he asked.

"Until we reach Vandau." That was no answer to his question. It was an answer to the question he had really asked, and that ran: am I still needed.

Er war ein Sterblicher aus dem unteren Deck, ein Mann mit dicken Handgelenken und einer Narbe, die aussah, als hätte jemand versucht, ihm den Kiefer abzunehmen und es sich anders überlegt. Er hatte zweiundzwanzig Jahre bei uns gedient. Er hatte, soweit ich es beurteilen konnte, in diesen zweiundzwanzig Jahren keinen einzigen Tag Hunger gehabt.

He nodded and let his head sink back. Kellec was no Astartes. He was a mortal from the lower deck, a man with thick wrists and a scar that looked as though someone had tried to take his jaw off and thought better of it. He had served with us for twenty-two years. He had, so far as I could judge, not gone hungry a single day in those twenty-two years.

I set the needle in his jugular and gave him twelve millilitres of something he took for a painkiller. It was one. It was also other things. When we reached Vandau, Kellec would be strong for three days, stronger than he had been at twenty, and on the fourth day there would be nothing left of him one could bury. I had developed the preparation myself. I had improved it seventeen times. It was, in its way, good work.

That is the part no one will believe of me, so I write it down first: I was good. Not willing, not broken, not bewitched. Good. My hands knew what they were doing, they had always known it, and in seventy-eight years no one compelled me to anything, not once.

Sie war ein Kasten aus Plaststahl, so lang wie mein Unterarm, mit zwanzig Fächern in zwei Reihen. Neunzehn davon waren belegt. Jedes Fach trug eine geätzte Zahl, keinen Namen, weil das Protokoll des Ordens Namen an dieser Stelle nicht vorsah — ein Apothecarius trägt keine Brüder, er trägt Gensaat, und Gensaat hat keinen Vornamen. Das Protokoll hatte natürlich recht. Ich hatte trotzdem irgendwann angefangen, die Namen von innen an den Deckel zu ritzen, mit der Spitze des Reduktors, in einer Schrift, die so klein war, dass ich sie selbst kaum lesen konnte.

It was a case of plasteel, as long as my forearm, with twenty compartments in two rows. Nineteen of them were occupied. Each compartment bore an etched number, no name, because the Chapter's protocol did not provide for names at that point — an Apothecary does not carry brothers, he carries gene-seed, and gene-seed has no given name. The protocol was of course right. I had nevertheless at some point begun to scratch the names into the inside of the lid, with the point of the reductor, in a hand so small that I could barely read it myself.

Dhalen. Sennik. Ovar. Merrek. Und fünfzehn weitere.

The cooling had worked for seventy-eight years. I had stripped it four times and three times replaced parts that did not properly exist aboard that ship. The Host had procured them for me. He had never asked what for.

That is the second thing no one will believe of me: they never took anything from me.

I closed the lid, locked it and laid my hand on it, as I had for seventy-eight years before sleeping. On the back of my hand, there where the gauntlet of the power armour ends, sits a tattoo I did not cut myself. It is small. It is at bottom rather pretty. For seventy-seven years I was able to look at it every morning and resolve to cut it out, and that is a great many mornings for a resolve that never grew older than the day.

I needed more than a century to understand that this is not an invitation. It is a stocktaking.

II. SerrivanII. Serrivan

That was 923.M41, and I am beginning at the wrong end. I am beginning at the wrong end because I am shirking writing down the beginning, and because an Apothecary has learned to set the cut where it hurts least. In this story there is no such place. So: the beginning.

Serrivan, 811.M41. Eine Schwarmwelt am Ostrand des Segmentum Tempestus, zweiundvierzig Milliarden Menschen, drei Kontinente aus gestapeltem Beton und eine Atmosphäre, die man auf der Zunge schmeckte, sobald man den Helm abnahm. Metall, Öl, Menschen. Vor allem Menschen. Vierundzwanzig Standardtage vor unserer Ankunft war in der Sub-Kaverne Neun ein Kult aufgeflogen, und drei Tage danach war die Sub-Kaverne Neun kein Ort mehr, sondern eine Diagnose.

Serrivan, 811.M41. A hive world on the eastern edge of Segmentum Tempestus, forty-two billion people, three continents of stacked concrete and an atmosphere one tasted on the tongue as soon as one took off the helm. Metal, oil, people. Above all people. Twenty-four standard days before our arrival a cult had been uncovered in Sub-Cavern Nine, and three days after that Sub-Cavern Nine was no longer a place but a diagnosis.

I was eighty-two years old at the time and had been Apothecary of the Third Company of the Ember Watch for eleven years.

Wir sind ein junger Orden, gemessen an denen, die uns gezeugt haben. We are a young Chapter, measured against those who begot us. Our gene-seed comes from Nocturne, by way of two intermediate stations, and what of it has arrived in us are the eyes, amber, in some almost yellow, and the skin, which on Kaldrath turns grey like cold ash, because on Kaldrath ash falls three hundred days in the year. What has likewise arrived, and that is more important: the conviction that a Chapter which does not protect people is no Chapter but a weapon that has forgotten whom it belongs to.

Every brother of the Ember Watch carries at his elevation a piece of charcoal from the Chapter hearth on Kaldrath in a sealed compartment at his belt. The hearth-coal. It is about the size of a finger joint and entirely worthless. When you die it is burned with you, and that is the whole purpose: you are to know that a part of the fire that made you goes out with you and does not come back. The Chapter gives you nothing it would not lose.

We were sent to Serrivan because the planetary guard stood at sixty-two per cent losses and because Sub-Cavern Nine was spreading like water through gravel — downward, sideways, into passages of which no one had charts any more.

Vierzehn Tage lang taten wir das, wofür wir gemacht sind.

For fourteen days we did what we are made for.

Und dann taten wir das, wofür wir gemacht worden sind, was etwas anderes ist.

And then we did what we have been made for, which is something else.

Am fünfzehnten Tag entschied Hauptmann Ossvir, dass die Ostspange von Bezirk Vier zu halten war, und weil die Ostspange zu halten war, mussten hundertsechzigtausend Menschen aus ihr heraus. Es gab genau einen Weg: die Versorgungsrampe Sieben, vier Kilometer lang, achtzehn Meter breit, mit einer Steigung, bei der ein alter Mensch nach zweihundert Metern stehen bleibt.

On the fifteenth day Captain Ossvir decided that the East Span of District Four was to be held, and because the East Span was to be held, a hundred and sixty thousand people had to get out of it. There was exactly one way: Supply Ramp Seven, four kilometres long, eighteen metres wide, with a gradient at which an old person stops after two hundred metres.

I was posted to the ramp with two squads.

I know that a woman called Marike gave me her child, because she was carrying her father and had no third hand. The child was called Osme, was four or five and had a head full of soot. I carried it two kilometres, in the crook of my left arm, and it slept the whole time, because a child that has been afraid long enough eventually simply sleeps.

Not: You are safe for the present. Not: It is safer here. I said the four words one says to a person when one wants them to stop being afraid, and I said them because I believed them, and because I was eighty-two years old and had never yet known the Imperium to go up a ramp and then do something other than what it had promised.

I know that in those fourteen hours I gave four hundred people my hand. I know that because I count. I have always counted. It is an occupational disease and it is the worst thing about me.

III. Der GratIII. The Ridge

Der Befehl kam am siebzehnten Tag, um 04:41 Bordzeit, über den Kanal des Ordensmeisters, und er war acht Sätze lang.

The order came on the seventeenth day, at 04:41 ship's time, over the Chapter Master's channel, and it was eight sentences long.

Inquisitorielle Anordnung. Der Erreger in Sub-Kaverne Neun war kein Erreger. Er war ein Träger. Neunzehn Tage Inkubation, Übertragung durch Kontakt, klinisch unauffällig bis zum letzten Drittel — und in diesem letzten Drittel nicht mehr behandelbar, sondern nur noch zu beenden. Inquisitorial directive. The pathogen in Sub-Cavern Nine was no pathogen. It was a carrier. Nineteen days' incubation, transmission by contact, clinically unremarkable until the last third — and in that last third no longer treatable, only to be ended. The East Span of District Four had been contaminated for sixteen days. What had come out of it was likewise contaminated. What touched what had come out of it would be so in nineteen days.

Serrivan war nicht mehr zu retten. Serrivan war einzudämmen, und einzudämmen bedeutete: von oben.

Serrivan could no longer be saved. Serrivan was to be contained, and to contain meant: from above.

Wir hatten sechsundzwanzig Stunden, um die Ordensdiener und das Gerät hochzubringen. Die Sammelstelle für die Evakuierten — mein Wort dafür, nicht seines; im Befehl stand die betroffene Population — lag auf dem Plateau über der Rampe Sieben und hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt siebenundneunzigtausend Menschen aufgenommen.

We had twenty-six hours to get the Chapter serfs and the equipment up. The collecting point for the evacuated — my word for it, not his; in the order it said the affected population — lay on the plateau above Ramp Seven and had at that time taken in ninety-seven thousand people.

I went to Chapter Master Hesk Torgan.

And he looked at me — he was two hundred and forty years old, he had done on three worlds what we would now do on one, and he did not look like a man defending something but like one who had long since stopped spending strength on it — and he said: "I know, brother. I have done that too."

That was all. That was the whole argument. Six seconds.

I have thought for a hundred and thirty-five years about what I ought to have said, and I have found nothing that would not also have been merely a sentence.

I helped with the loading.

That is the sentence this is about. Not: I did not stop it. Not: I was forced. I helped with the loading. I stood for eleven hours in the loading bay of a Thunderhawk and passed equipment along, because I am tall and because my hands were free, and at some point in that eleventh hour I noticed that I had found the rhythm. One always finds the rhythm. The body is a traitor with excellent manners.

The bombardment run lasted four minutes and eleven seconds. A virus bombardment does not look spectacular from below. There is no fireball, no shock wave, no sound greater than a distant tearing. What there is, is a colour. The sky over Serrivan became for about twenty seconds a very pale, very clean yellow, like the inside of an egg, and then it was as before again, and then the air began to move, because air moves when forty-two billion bodies stop consuming it.

From my position I could see Ramp Seven. I could see it clearly. I had spent fourteen hours walking up and down it, I knew every bend, I knew the place at kilometre two point three where the railing was missing and where I had taken the child over to the other side, because I did not want it to look down.

I could have looked away. The armour permits it. One turns the head, and then there is a rock.

I did not look away. I counted. I do not know what I counted. I know only that I was at seven thousand four hundred when someone touched my shoulder and said it was over, and that in that moment I did not at once understand what was meant by over.

Wir stiegen auf. Die Gehütete Glut nahm uns bei drei-null-zwei auf. Ich brachte meine Ausrüstung in die Apothecarion, verzeichnete den Verbrauch — vier Ampullen Stimulans, zwei Kompressverbände, nichts, was der Rede wert war —, ging in meine Zelle und schlief acht Stunden und vierzig Minuten.

We lifted. The Guarded Ember took us aboard at three-zero-two. I brought my equipment to the Apothecarion, recorded the consumption — four ampoules of stimulant, two compression dressings, nothing worth mentioning — went to my cell and slept eight hours and forty minutes.

Das ist es. Das ist der Punkt, an dem es begann, und ich habe hundertfünfunddreißig Jahre gebraucht, um zu verstehen, dass es nicht der Grat war.

That is it. That is the point at which it began, and I needed a hundred and thirty-five years to understand that it was not the ridge.

It was the eight hours and forty minutes.

IV. Das Zweite WortIV. The Second Word

Ich ging zu Ordenspriester Hadrek Vurn im vierten Monat.

I went to Chaplain Hadrek Vurn in the fourth month.

Nicht in der ersten Woche. Nicht im ersten Monat. Im vierten, und der Grund dafür ist, dass ich in den ersten drei Monaten nichts gefühlt habe, worüber man hätte sprechen müssen. Ich schlief. Ich arbeitete. Ich führte in Kaldraths Winter zweiundsiebzig Aspiranten durch die Erste Prüfung und verlor neun, was ein guter Schnitt ist. Ich war, nach jedem Maß, das der Orden anlegte, vollständig einsatzfähig.

Not in the first week. Not in the first month. In the fourth, and the reason for that is that in the first three months I felt nothing one would have had to speak about. I slept. I worked. In Kaldrath's winter I took seventy-two aspirants through the First Trial and lost nine, which is a good average. I was, by every measure the Chapter applied, fully fit for service.

Was mich schließlich zu ihm trieb, war eine Kleinigkeit. Ich hatte einen Novizen zu untersuchen, sechzehn Jahre alt, aus der Nordkette, Rippenbruch nach dem Fall von einer Leiter. What finally drove me to him was a trifle. I had to examine a novice, sixteen years old, from the North Range, a broken rib after a fall from a ladder. And as I laid my hand on his ribcage to feel for the break, he held his breath, not from pain but from awe, and I noticed that I felt nothing. Not impatience, not warmth, not the small, silly affection one feels for a sixteen-year-old trying to look brave. Nothing.

Vurn sat on the floor before it, without armour, in a smock of coarse wool, and pushed coals into place with a stick.

You are right that it tears you apart. A brother of our Chapter whom it did not tear apart would be a greater worry to me than you."

Bei uns ist das kein Bild und keine Redensart, sondern ein Verfahren. Der Ordenspriester antwortet einem zweifelnden Bruder zweimal. Die erste Antwort gilt dem Menschen und wird nicht aufgeschrieben. Die zweite gilt dem Orden und steht seit der Gründung fest, Wort für Wort, und wenn sie gesprochen ist, gilt die Sache als beschieden. Nicht als gelöst. Als beschieden. Man geht dann und tut seine Pflicht, und man kommt in dieser Sache nicht wieder.

With us that is no image and no figure of speech but a procedure. The Chaplain answers a doubting brother twice. The first answer is for the man and is not written down. The second is for the Chapter and has stood fixed since the founding, word for word, and once it is spoken the matter counts as decided. Not as solved. As decided. One goes then and does one's duty, and one does not come again in that matter.

I could write it out here. It is seventy-one words. They are not false — that is the part one has to understand. There is nothing false in it. It says that mankind is greater than any man; that he who protects it burns his hands on it; that the ember we keep is not ours and that it is not for us to say where it burns. I have tested those seventy-one words like a tissue sample, for a hundred and thirty-five years, from every side, and I have found no sentence in them that is not true.

I dressed eleven hundred wounds and harvested sixty-four brothers and twice brought a company through a siege, and in all those thirty-two years I thought of Serrivan exactly seven times, each time briefly, each time without a barb.

845.M41. A space hulk in the void between Vandau and the Kaldrath jump point, eighteen hulls driven together, the oldest piece of it perhaps four thousand years. Such a thing is always a question of time: either one goes in, or one waits until what is inside comes out.

It was splinters of a warband that had lived there for decades, and it was a corridor that turned a corner after two hundred metres, and in that corner were nine automatic guns that had been on not a single auspex image, because they lay under four metres of frozen promethium.

I twice let my hands shake, which had not happened to me since the third year of training, and with Sennik I had to make three attempts, because a splinter sat in the fourth vertebra and because Sennik was twenty-two years old and because I had known him from the day of his admission.

One harvests the gene-seed from the throat and from the chest. The throat gland is the first; it ripens in five years, and in a Chapter like ours one takes it from a brother in his lifetime, in a chamber with candles, with a formula and a cup of water afterwards. The chest gland is the second. It needs ten years, and it stays where it is until he falls. In the youngest the throat gland still sits soft in the tissue, and one must take care not to go through.

"Ilvane Sarr. My people call me the Host, because they think themselves witty. Are you coming, or shall we discuss this here until your cooling fails?"

I shall not tell you that your Emperor is a lie, because you either know that already or will never believe it, and in both cases it would be wasted time. I shall tell you one thing only, and then you get in or you do not."

"And you have nineteen compartments occupied and have kept a cooling alive for three hundred hours instead of sleeping properly once. I know what sort of man that is. I have had many of them at my table."

He made a small pause. "I am not asking whether it was. I have no right to. I say only: in a hundred years no one from your Chapter has said to you that it was wrong. Not necessary and wrong. Only wrong. I say it now, it costs me nothing, and you may do with it what you like."

He said a sentence that my own Chaplain had also said to me, in the first answer, the answer that is for the man — and then my Chaplain had spoken the Second Word and closed the matter, because he had to, because he was a Chapter and not a man.

They seek dying worlds. Not worlds they could destroy — there are enough of those and they are uninteresting — but worlds the Imperium has already written off. An agri world behind a warp storm that has not seen a transport for nine years. A mining moon whose allocation a clerk in the Munitorum misposted half a century ago and that no one has looked for since. Places at which the administration has already answered by not answering.

They choose. That is the part I longest took for a proof. The Host never helps himself. He lets them choose, and he waits, and he takes what they give him, and in forty years I saw exactly twice that a world said no. Both times he went. Both times without a single word and without taking the tanks back with him.

The first: I treated their wounded. Six weeks after my admission, a brother with a gut shot, and I stood beside it and watched a man who understood nothing of surgery poking about in him with a cauter. I pushed him aside. I did not consider. If I could go back a hundred years and undo one single step, it would not be this one, for this step was right, and therein lies the whole problem.

That was my calling, literally, in exactly the form in which my Chapter had taught it to me. For nineteen months I was happier than I had been in the thirty-two years after Serrivan.

That is a word with a long and honourable history. It means: to choose out.

It was the most humane solution within the bounds of the possible.

Terle Hausk came to me in 904.M41, at fifteen, because she had small hands and because her mother was dead. She was born aboard. Her grandmother had been a twentieth, somewhere, long ago, on a world whose name no one knew any more. Terle could read, which was rare, and she had the ambition of a person who knows she is replaceable.

The Host decided to go, and to take the tithe beforehand, and because there was no time, not to have the tithe chosen but to seize it. It was the first time in seventy-eight years that he had done that. He told me himself, in private, and while doing so he looked like a man who has had something broken.

Age, condition, training, prospect. Fourteen categories. I had refined those categories over seventy-eight years, and they were better than anything the Apothecarion of my Chapter ever produced, and I was proud of them, and in a sick little chamber of my head I am so to this day.

Terle was waiting for me when I woke. She stood at the door of my chamber, which in nineteen years she had never done, and she had her hands before her, like a person who has practised what she means to say.

It came well. It came complete. It came in closed sentences, with a beginning and an end, and I listened to myself doing it as to a stranger. I told her that an order does not decide who dies but only in what order; that a physician who refuses to choose has thereby chosen too, only worse; that pity which cannot count kills more people than any cruelty; that we had saved a hundred and twelve thousand, which is a hundred and twelve thousand more than the Imperium did for that world in sixty years. I told her that the ember we keep is not ours and that it is not for us to say where it burns.

Hadrek Vurn hatte wenigstens gewusst, dass sein Zweites Wort älter war als er. Er hatte es nicht erfunden. Hadrek Vurn had at least known that his Second Word was older than he was. He had not invented it. He had carried it, as one carries a burden that was given to one, and I needed a hundred and twelve years to see how he had looked while doing it, when he straightened up: he had looked like a man doing something he is ashamed of, and doing it all the same, because it is his office.

How I came to Kaldrath does not belong here. It took nineteen months. It cost three ships, six truths and a man who did not deserve it, and I shall not write about it, because I do not want anyone to think that that was the hard part.

XI. Der PreisXI. The Price

They did not shoot. That was the first surprise, and I heard afterwards why: I had come in with an open vox and without weapons and with the heraldry of the Ember Watch on my chest, which I had not ground off in seventy-eight years, and a scout in the reception station had recognised the Chapter number and woken the Chapter Master.

Achtundzwanzig Tage Quarantäne in einer Kammer aus versiegeltem Ceramit unter der Feste. Vier Untersuchungen täglich. Twenty-eight days of quarantine in a chamber of sealed ceramite beneath the fastness. Four examinations daily. A Librarian, three times, eleven hours each, so thorough that afterwards I could not find a word for two days. They were not cruel. They were careful, which is worse, because cruelty one can hate.

On the twenty-ninth day they fetched the cold drawer.

Apothecarius Sevrin Ott war siebenundvierzig Jahre alt. Er war nicht geboren, als ich fiel. He had light amber eyes and the thin, ash-grey skin of the children from the North Range, and he wore the white plate I had not worn for seventy-eight years, and he treated me with a courtesy that had displaced everything else he might have felt.

The throat gland they had taken from me at thirty-three, as from everyone. That left the second, the one in the chest, which an Apothecary gives back to his Chapter at the end. Ott took the sample himself, cleanly, with steady hands, and I watched his face while the instrument worked, and I knew the answer about four seconds before he did, because I knew the instrument.

„Verworfen", sagte er.

"Rejected," he said.

„Wie stark?"

"How strongly?"

He had been embedded in 889.M41, on Herrenmark — on the same world on which thirty-four years earlier I had written my first order, which no one but me will ever find funny. He was now four metres tall. His casing was black and bore the death's head and the coal of the Chaplain's office, and the voice that came from the grille was his, only lowered by two tones, because such a device simply works that way.

"Death is a service," he said. "You are out of the service. We shall not honour you by burning you, and we shall not lie by taking you back. There is a third thing for you, and it is old, and with us it has been imposed seven times, and none of the seven has come back."

It runs thus: the condemned leaves Kaldrath and does not return. He bears no heraldry, no rank and no name; his name is taken out of the Chapter books, not struck through but cut out, so that at that place there is a hole and everyone sees it. He travels through the void and seeks the dead of other Chapters — the forgotten, the left lying, those for whom no one came back — and he takes their gene-seed and brings it home to their brothers and does not say who he is. He does that until his body stops. It is recorded nowhere. He is not thanked for it.

Sevrin Ott brought me to the lock. That was not his task. A Chapter serf would have done it.

He had the empty cold drawer under his arm — they gave it back to me, because I would need it, and because it was the only object in the Chapter's possession that no one wanted. Nineteen compartments open, the twentieth empty, as for eighty years.
