Eskil was on the roof because he knew they would come, and he knew it because he had been counting for four years.

The roof was shingle over rafters, and the shingles were damp from the morning, and he lay flat on them with his toes in the angle of the gutter so that he would not slide. Below him the house was quiet. Above him stood the forest.

Der Wald von Varanthos stand immer. Er stand dreihundert Meter hoch und war so alt, dass die untersten sechzig Meter der Stämme keine Rinde mehr hatten, sondern etwas Glattes, Graues, Steinernes, in das man einen Namen nur ritzen konnte, wenn man drei Tage dafür hatte. The forest of Varanthos always stood. It stood three hundred metres high and was so old that the lowest sixty metres of the trunks had no bark left, but something smooth, grey and stony, into which a name could be cut only if one had three days for it. The village of Nine Springs lay in a hole in that forest which his great-grandmother had kept clear with fire, and her grandmother before her, and the sun came in at the fourth hour of the morning and was gone again by the ninth.

At the fifth hour the canopy tore open.

Nicht mit einem Geräusch. Das war es, was Eskil sein Leben lang nicht vergessen würde: Es fing lautlos an. Not with a sound. That was the thing Eskil would not forget for the rest of his life: it began silently. First a point, white, in the green dark above, like a hole in a cloth that someone is lighting from behind with a lamp. Then the point grew larger. Then the foliage around the point began to curl outward, very slowly, like paper over a candle.

It came from above and from all sides at once, a tearing one felt in the teeth, and the three points of fire, there were three of them by now, fell down through three hundred metres of forest, and everything they touched burned for two seconds and then went out, because the forest of Varanthos was wet to the marrow and did not keep fire that it did not want to keep.

Sie schlugen auf der Lichtung ein, vierhundert Schritte hinter dem letzten Haus.

They struck the clearing, four hundred paces behind the last house.

Eskil rutschte vom Dach. Er rutschte die letzten zwei Meter frei und landete falsch und spürte es nicht.

Eskil slid off the roof. He slid the last two metres free and landed wrongly and did not feel it.

His mother stood in the yard. She had the bucket in her hand and had not set it down, and she was not looking at the clearing but at him, and her face was quite calm, and in that calm was something Eskil could not read.

"Put on the brown one," said Ranna. "Not the good one."

"Why not the good one?"

An der Wand neben der Tür, wo im Winter das Holz lag, saß Halvard und schnitzte an einem Stiel. Er hatte nicht aufgesehen, als das Kronendach riss. Er sah auch jetzt nicht auf.

Against the wall beside the door, where the wood lay in winter, sat Halvard, carving at a haft. He had not looked up when the canopy tore. He did not look up now either.

„Halvard", sagte Eskil.

"Halvard," said Eskil.

Sein Bruder drehte den Stiel eine Vierteldrehung weiter und nahm einen Span ab, dünn wie Haut.

His brother turned the haft a quarter turn further and took off a shaving, thin as skin.

„Zieh das Braune an", sagte er.

"Put on the brown one," he said.

II. Die ZählungThe Counting

Sie kamen alle sieben Jahre, und dass sie alle sieben Jahre kamen, war das Einzige an ihnen, das die Dörfer sicher wussten.

They came every seven years, and that they came every seven years was the only thing about them the villages knew for certain.

Vier von ihnen. Immer vier: einer, der sprach, einer, der schrieb, einer, der die Kinder anfasste, und einer, der nichts tat und dabei stand. Four of them. Always four: one who spoke, one who wrote, one who touched the children, and one who did nothing and stood there. They stood on the clearing in the open fire circle that the villages laid out afresh every seven years and did not enter in between, and the fire circle burned although no one had lit it; they brought the fire with them, in iron pots, and it was red and smelled of nothing.

They were larger than Eskil had imagined, and he had imagined a great deal.

Their armour was dark green, the green of the forest in the last light, with black plates at shoulders and shins, where the forest most readily tears a man open. On the shoulder plates there was no heraldry but a burned-in notch, and the number of notches differed. Their faces were black as coal and their eyes red as smouldering wood, and that frightened no one in the village, because on Varanthos it had been known for six hundred generations what a Dragon Warden looks like.

Nine Springs brought fifty-one children.

"You will stand in a line," said the speaker. His voice was quiet and carried to the last hut. "You will say your name, the name of your mother, the name of the village and your summers. If you have miscounted, you will say so. Miscounting is not a fault. Lying is one."

They had the line walked down. It took a long time. The second wrote, with a stylus on a tablet that was neither wood nor metal, and he wrote quickly and without looking up.

The third touched. He went from child to child and laid a hand round the neck, the way one tests a jug, and held still for three heartbeats. Then he let go and moved on, and sometimes he said a word to the writer and sometimes he did not.

When he came to Eskil, the hand was hot. Not warm. Hot, like a kettle handle left too long over the fire, and Eskil set his teeth and did not move and counted in his head: one, two, three.

At four the Dragon Warden did not let go.

At five he said: "Brother."

The fourth, who until then had done nothing and only stood there, came over.

"Summers?" he asked.

"Thirteen," said Eskil. "Lord."

„Ranna, aus Neun Quellen."

"Ranna, of Nine Springs."

"And your brother," said the fourth, "is Halvard, of Nine Springs, and he went with us three Countings ago and came back in the same year."

It was not a question. The line went quiet, in the way it goes quiet when a thing is spoken aloud that everyone knows and no one says.

Eskil hatte sich vier Jahre lang Antworten zurechtgelegt. Er hatte sie auf dem Dach geübt, im Kopf, beim Wasserholen, beim Einschlafen. Er hatte eine gute Antwort für diese Frage, und sie war ehrlich und stolz und wohlklingend, und als er den Mund aufmachte, kam sie nicht.

Eskil had spent four years preparing answers. He had practised them on the roof, in his head, while fetching water, while falling asleep. He had a good answer for that question, and it was honest and proud and well-sounding, and when he opened his mouth it did not come.

„Ich weiß nicht, was da passiert ist", sagte er. „Er redet nicht darüber. Ich weiß nur, dass er noch da ist und dass er jeden Tag arbeitet, und dass niemand im Dorf ihn ansieht, wenn er über den Platz geht."

"I do not know what happened there," he said. "He does not talk about it. I only know that he is still here and that he works every day, and that no one in the village looks at him when he crosses the square."

Der Vierte betrachtete ihn.

The fourth regarded him.

„Wie heißt du?", fragte er.

"What is your name?" he asked.

„Eskil."

"Eskil."

„Ich bin Ossmar", sagte der Drachenwächter. „Merk dir den Namen nicht. Wenn du ihn brauchst, wirst du ihn wieder hören, und wenn du ihn nicht wieder hörst, hast du ihn nicht gebraucht."

"I am Ossmar," said the Dragon Warden. "Do not commit the name to memory. If you need it, you will hear it again, and if you do not hear it again, you did not need it."

III. Der WegsteinThe Waystone

Es wurden neun genommen aus Neun Quellen. Das war viel; zwei Zählungen davor waren es drei gewesen, und aus Sechs Bäume, dem Nachbardorf drei Tagesmärsche nach Süden, waren einmal null genommen worden, und darüber sprach man dort bis heute nicht.

Nine were taken from Nine Springs. That was many; two Countings before it had been three, and from Six Trees, the neighbouring village three days' march to the south, none had once been taken, and they do not speak of it there to this day.

Sie gingen am nächsten Morgen los.

They set out the next morning.

Die Drachenwächter fuhren nicht. Das war eine der Sachen, die Eskil nicht erwartet hatte: Sie hatten Schiffe, die durch dreihundert Meter Wald fielen, und sie ließen die Kinder trotzdem laufen. Elf Tage nach Osten, zur Kette, wo der Wald aufhört, weil der Berg anfängt. Wer nicht ankam, kam nicht an. Es gab keine Bewachung und keine Nachhut. Der Weg war der erste Teil der Prüfung, und man sagte es ihnen nicht, weil das Nichtsagen dazugehörte.

The Dragon Wardens did not fly them. That was one of the things Eskil had not expected: they had ships that fell through three hundred metres of forest, and they let the children walk all the same. Eleven days east, to the Chain, where the forest stops because the mountain begins. Whoever did not arrive did not arrive. There was no escort and no rearguard. The road was the first part of the trial, and they were not told so, because the not telling was part of it.

Ranna brachte ihn bis an den Rand der Lichtung und nicht weiter. Sie hatte ihm ein Bündel gepackt, und darin war zu wenig, und Eskil verstand erst am vierten Tag, warum: Wer zu viel trägt, geht langsam, und wer langsam geht, kommt nicht an. Ranna brought him to the edge of the clearing and no further. She had packed him a bundle, and there was too little in it, and Eskil did not understand until the fourth day why: whoever carries too much walks slowly, and whoever walks slowly does not arrive. She had known what belongs in a bundle. Forty years ago she had packed one for a brother.

„Sag es nicht", sagte sie, bevor er etwas sagen konnte. „Wenn du es sagst, muss ich es beantworten."

"Do not say it," she said, before he could say anything. "If you say it, I have to answer it."

She laid her hand on the back of his neck, there where the Dragon Warden had laid his, and her hand was cold.

Halvard kam mit.

Halvard came along.

Das hatte niemand erwartet, am wenigsten Eskil. Sein Bruder war einfach da, als sie loszogen, zwei Schritte hinter der Gruppe, mit einem Beil im Gürtel und ohne Bündel, und er sagte in den ersten drei Tagen ungefähr elf Wörter, und neun davon waren „links" oder „nicht da lang".

No one had expected that, least of all Eskil. His brother was simply there when they set off, two paces behind the group, with an axe in his belt and no bundle, and in the first three days he said about eleven words, and nine of them were "left" or "not that way".

But he walked at the front when it grew dark, and he knew which of the ferns stung and which did not, and on the second evening he built a windbreak in eighteen minutes that would have taken the nine of them an hour.

On the sixth day they came to the waystone.

It was an upright block, the height of a man, so old that the notches in it were only shadows now, and it stood for no discernible reason in the middle of the forest, where there was no path and no crossing. Halvard stopped twelve paces short of it.

Eskil ging weiter und merkte nach vier Schritten, dass er allein ging, und drehte sich um.

Eskil walked on and noticed after four steps that he was walking alone, and turned round.

„Komm."

"Come."

„Nein."

"No."

„Es ist ein Stein."

"It is a stone."

„Ja", sagte Halvard.

"Yes," said Halvard.

Er stand da, mit dem Beil im Gürtel, und sah nicht zu dem Stein, sondern daneben, in den Wald.

He stood there, with the axe in his belt, and did not look at the stone but past it, into the forest.

„Was passiert, wenn du weitergehst?", fragte Eskil.

"What happens if you go on?" Eskil asked.

„Nichts", sagte Halvard. „Niemand kommt. Niemand sieht zu. Es steht kein Wächter da und es passiert überhaupt nichts, und deswegen geht keiner von uns weiter."

"Nothing," said Halvard. "No one comes. No one is watching. There is no warden standing there and nothing at all happens, and that is why none of us goes on."

He took the axe out of his belt and held it out to Eskil, haft first.

"Do not take it with you," he said. "They will take it from you at the gate. I only wanted you to have it for the last five days."

Eskil took it. It was their father's axe, and Halvard had spent three years carving at it because the haft had broken, and Eskil understood in that moment that his brother had spent three years carving an axe haft that he himself would never need again.

„Halvard."

"Halvard."

„Nein", sagte Halvard. „Frag nicht."

"No," said Halvard. "Do not ask."

„Ich frage nicht, was passiert ist." Eskil hielt das Beil mit beiden Händen. „Ich frage, ob du es noch mal machen würdest."

"I am not asking what happened." Eskil held the axe in both hands. "I am asking whether you would do it again."

Sein Bruder sah ihn an. Er war achtzehn und sah aus wie dreißig, und in seinem Gesicht war nichts Bitteres, und das war das Schlimmste.

His brother looked at him. He was eighteen and looked thirty, and there was nothing bitter in his face, and that was the worst of it.

„Jeden Tag", sagte er.

"Every day," he said.

Dann drehte er sich um und ging nach Westen, und er sah kein einziges Mal zurück, und das war keine Härte, sondern eine Regel, und Eskil verstand die Regel erst sehr viel später.

Then he turned round and walked west, and he did not look back a single time, and that was not hardness but a rule, and Eskil understood the rule only much later.

IV. Die KetteThe Ridge

Von den neun aus Neun Quellen kamen sechs an.

Of the nine from Nine Springs, six arrived.

Einer war am achten Tag umgekehrt; das war erlaubt und wurde nicht gezählt, und er würde zu Hause ein normales Leben führen und irgendwann jemandem erzählen, dass er es sich anders überlegt habe, und irgendwann würde er es selbst glauben. Zwei kamen nicht um und kehrten nicht um. Der eine war in eine Senke gestiegen, in der Gas stand, und der andere hatte nachts einen Laut gehört und war ihm nachgegangen. Der Wald von Varanthos war nicht böse. Er war nur sehr groß und hatte keine Verwendung für Vorsicht.

One had turned back on the eighth day; that was permitted and was not counted, and he would live a normal life at home and would one day tell someone that he had changed his mind, and one day he would believe it himself. Two did not die and did not turn back. The one had climbed down into a hollow where gas stood, and the other had heard a sound in the night and had followed it. The forest of Varanthos was not evil. It was only very large and had no use for caution.

An der Kette warteten schon andere.

At the Chain others were waiting already.

Sie kamen aus zweihundert Dörfern, und sie standen in Gruppen nach Dörfern, und keiner sprach mit einer anderen Gruppe, weil man auf Varanthos nicht mit Fremden sprach, bevor man ihren Wald kannte. Eskil zählte, weil er immer zählte. Es waren zwischen dreihundert und vierhundert.

They came from two hundred villages, and they stood in groups by village, and none spoke to another group, because on Varanthos one does not speak to strangers before one knows their forest. Eskil counted, because he always counted. There were between three and four hundred.

Am Fuß des Berges war ein Tor, und über dem Tor war kein Wappen und keine Schrift, sondern eine Reihe von Kerben, und die Kerben liefen über den ganzen Sturz, und niemand konnte sie zählen, weil sie um die Ecke weitergingen.

At the foot of the mountain was a gate, and above the gate there was no heraldry and no writing but a row of notches, and the notches ran across the whole lintel, and no one could count them, because they carried on round the corner.

Brother Ossmar stood beneath it.

„Ihr habt euer Dorf verlassen", sagte er. Wieder diese leise Stimme, die überall ankam. „Ihr habt gedacht, ihr geht zu uns. Das stimmt nicht. Wir sind nicht hier. Wir sind da, wo ihr herkommt."

"You have left your village," he said. Again that quiet voice that arrived everywhere. "You have thought that you are coming to us. That is not so. We are not here. We are where you come from."

He let that stand. No one understood it. That was plainly intended.

„Was hier oben passiert, ist die Werkstatt", sagte Ossmar. „Nicht das Werk. Die Werkstatt ist laut und schmutzig und viele Stücke brechen. Ihr seid die Stücke."

"What happens up here is the workshop," said Ossmar. "Not the work. The workshop is loud and dirty and many pieces break. You are the pieces."

Er trat zur Seite.

He stepped aside.

„Wer hinter mir durchgeht, kann nicht zurückgehen. Ich sage das nicht, um euch zu drohen. Es gibt am Berg keinen Weg nach unten außer über die Straße, auf der ihr gekommen seid, und ihr werdet in acht Tagen nicht mehr in der Verfassung sein, sie zu gehen. Wer jetzt umkehrt, hat einundzwanzig Tage vor sich und kommt an. Wer in einer Stunde umkehren will, kommt nicht an."

"Whoever passes behind me cannot go back. I do not say that to threaten you. There is no way down from the mountain except by the road you came on, and in eight days you will no longer be in a condition to walk it. Whoever turns back now has twenty-one days ahead of him and will arrive. Whoever wants to turn back in an hour will not arrive."

Elf gingen. Eskil sah ihnen nach und stellte fest, dass er sie nicht verachtete, und stellte danach fest, dass ihn das mehr beunruhigte als alles andere an diesem Tag.

Eleven went. Eskil watched them go and found that he did not despise them, and then found that this disquieted him more than anything else that day.

"The rest," said Ossmar, "will pass through in ranks of twelve. At the gate you will hand over what you carry. You will get none of it back. Take now into your hands what you want to keep, and look at it, for afterwards you will not see it again."

Eskil nahm das Beil in beide Hände.

Eskil took the axe in both hands.

Er sah es zwölf Atemzüge lang an, den Stiel, die drei Jahre Arbeit, die Stelle am unteren Ende, wo Halvard eine Kerbe gesetzt hatte, damit die Hand wusste, wo unten war. He looked at it for twelve breaths, the haft, the three years of work, the place at the lower end where Halvard had set a notch so that the hand would know where down was. Then he laid it in the chest at the gate, on top of a knife and a woollen scarf and a small stone that some child had brought from some brook.

Er ging durch.

He went through.

V. LäufeRuns

Die ersten neun Tage im Berg bestanden aus Laufen, und danach hörte Eskil auf, die Tage einzeln zu zählen.

The first nine days in the mountain consisted of running, and after that Eskil stopped counting the days singly.

Sie liefen die Straße hinauf, auf der sie gekommen waren, bis zum ersten Knick, und wieder herunter. Sie liefen mit Steinen, dann ohne, dann mit Steinen und im Dunkeln. Sie liefen zu zweit an einem Seil, was bedeutete, dass der Schnellere den Langsameren zog, bis der Langsamere fiel, und dann wurden beide gestrichen. Nicht der Langsamere. Beide.

They ran up the road they had come by, as far as the first bend, and down again. They ran with stones, then without, then with stones and in the dark. They ran in pairs on a rope, which meant that the faster dragged the slower until the slower fell, and then both were struck off. Not the slower. Both.

On the third day Eskil grasped the system, or believed he grasped it: they were not being tested on what they achieved but on how they divided it. On the fifth day it turned out that he was wrong, because a boy was struck off who had divided it excellently. On the seventh he stopped interpreting. That, he decided later, was probably the purpose.

Sein Seilpartner hieß Brannt und kam aus Elf Steine, zwei Täler südlich, und er redete.

His rope partner was called Brannt and came from Eleven Stones, two valleys to the south, and he talked.

He talked while running, which was forbidden, and while eating, which was allowed, and at night, which was neither the one nor the other, because at night no one said anything and so no one had needed a rule for it. He talked about his sisters, about a dog, about a girl he had said nothing to, and about the question of whether there were seas in the east.

„Es gibt Meere", sagte Eskil.

"There are seas," said Eskil.

„Hast du eins gesehen?"

"Have you seen one?"

„Nein."

"No."

„Dann weißt du's nicht."

"Then you do not know it."

„Es steht in den Liedern."

"It is in the songs."

„In den Liedern steht auch, dass die Drachenwächter aus dem Berg gekommen sind", sagte Brannt. „Und wir wissen jetzt, dass sie aus dem Himmel kommen. In Feuertöpfen. Meine Großmutter würde das nicht glauben."

"The songs also say that the Dragon Wardens came out of the mountain," said Brannt. "And we now know that they come out of the sky. In fire pots. My grandmother would not believe that."

Am elften Tag rutschte Brannt an der Nordkante ab, und Eskil hielt das Seil.

On the eleventh day Brannt slipped at the north edge, and Eskil held the rope.

He held it for thirty seconds, his back against an outcrop, and in those thirty seconds it went through his head that he ought to let go, because both were struck off if one fell, and that no one would see it if he let go, because up there in fact no one was standing — exactly as at the waystone.

He did not let go. Brannt came up. They ran the rest.

The next morning Brannt's niche was empty.

Eskil did not ask. One did not ask. He took the niche for his things, as everyone did, and he found that in doing so he set his teeth so hard that his jaw cracked, and that he laid his things in it all the same.

Wochen später, in einer schlaflosen Nacht, rechnete er nach und kam darauf, dass Brannt gestrichen worden sein musste, bevor er abrutschte. Die Listen wurden abends geschrieben, das wusste inzwischen jeder. Er war also nicht wegen des Seils gegangen.

Weeks later, in a sleepless night, he worked it out and arrived at the conclusion that Brannt must have been struck off before he slipped. The lists were written in the evening; everyone knew that by now. So he had not gone because of the rope.

It did not help. That was the thing Eskil learned that winter and never unlearned: it never helps to know afterwards that it was not your fault.

VI. Das AufsagenThe Reciting

The Dragon Wardens prayed in the fire. Not at the fire, not before the fire — in the fire, and that was the point at which other Chapters of the Vulkan line shook their heads, and some of them used a harder word.

The hall beneath the mountain had no benches. In the middle lay a bed of coals, sixty paces long, and above it ran a grating of black iron, and one knelt on the grating. That was bearable. The knees could stand it if one made it short.

"You will recite your dead," said Brother Ossmar. "Not the dead of the village. Yours. Whoever owed you something and whoever gave you something, and you will say both in the same list, because you are not clever enough to keep them apart, and neither are we."

Er kniete selbst hin, an der Stirnseite, und legte beide Handflächen in die Kohlen und sagte sechzehn Namen, in einem Ton, in dem man eine Bestandsliste vorliest. He knelt down himself, at the head end, and laid both palms in the coals and said sixteen names, in the tone in which one reads out an inventory. At each name nothing moved in his face. When he had finished, he took the hands out, and Eskil saw that the palms were white, scarred into the fingers, without lines.

„Ihr habt keine solchen Hände", sagte Ossmar. „Ihr habt Kinderhände. Deswegen macht ihr es kurz."

"You do not have such hands," said Ossmar. "You have children's hands. That is why you will make it short."

Es dauerte drei Stunden, bis alle durch waren.

It took three hours until all had been through.

There were no screams. That was not down to courage; it was down to the fact that the first four who screamed were taken out and led away, and that afterwards everyone knew what the rule was. The boy in front of Eskil said two names and wept without a sound and kept his hands in until Ossmar said, "Enough," and Ossmar said "enough" to him later than to others, and Eskil did not grasp whether that was a distinction or a punishment.

"Father," he said. "Tovar of Nine Springs. He read a tree wrongly and was under it."

"Grandmother Sela. She taught me counting and I never thanked her for it."

The pain was everywhere now, not only in his hands; it was in his neck and behind his eyes, and something in Eskil's head was demanding, very matter-of-factly and very urgently, that the hands come out at once.

Beside him Ossmar moved for the first time.

"Who is Jorin?"

"My mother's brother." Eskil was getting the words out only in bursts now. "He went forty years ago. At a Counting. No one ever came."

"Then he is not dead," said Ossmar. "Then you do not know it."

„Ja."

"Yes."

„Und du sagst ihn trotzdem auf."

"And you recite him all the same."

„Ja."

"Yes."

„Warum?"

"Why?"

Eskils Sicht ging an den Rändern weg. Er hörte sich selbst antworten und er hatte die Antwort nicht vorbereitet und wusste hinterher nicht, wo sie hergekommen war.

Eskil's sight was going at the edges. He heard himself answer and he had not prepared the answer and did not know afterwards where it had come from.

„Weil wir seinen Herd offen haben", sagte er. „Seit vierzig Jahren. Meine Mutter kehrt ihn jeden Sommer aus. Wenn niemand ihn aufsagt, hat sie vierzig Jahre lang einen Stein ausgekehrt."

"Because we keep his hearth open," he said. "For forty years. My mother sweeps it out every summer. If no one recites him, she has swept a stone for forty years."

Ossmar sagte: „Genug."

Ossmar said: "Enough."

Eskil bekam die Hände nicht allein heraus. Der Drachenwächter nahm sie ihm heraus, an den Unterarmen, ohne Umstand, wie man Werkzeug aus einem Feuer nimmt.

Eskil could not get his hands out by himself. The Dragon Warden took them out for him, by the forearms, without ceremony, the way one takes tools out of a fire.

VII. Was übrig bleibtWhat Remains

Of three hundred and eighty-seven, after thirteen days a hundred and nine were left, and after thirty-one, forty.

Eskil hätte nicht sagen können, wonach ausgesiebt wurde. Das war die eigentliche Prüfung, verstand er später: nicht die Läufe, nicht der Rost, nicht die Nächte im Schacht ohne Licht. Es war, dass man nie erfuhr, warum jemand ging. Der Junge, der der Schnellste von allen war, war am neunten Tag nicht mehr da. Ein dickliches, langsames Mädchen aus einem Dorf im Norden, das dreimal Letzte geworden war, war am einunddreißigsten Tag noch da und blieb bis zum Ende.

Eskil could not have said what they were being sifted for. That was the real trial, he understood later: not the runs, not the grating, not the nights in the shaft without light. It was that one never learned why anyone went. The boy who was the fastest of all was no longer there on the ninth day. A plump, slow girl from a village in the north, who had come last three times, was still there on the thirty-first day and stayed until the end.

Man gewöhnte sich daran, morgens zu zählen. Man gewöhnte sich nicht daran, dass es nichts brachte.

One got used to counting in the mornings. One did not get used to it being of no use.

He came without a light and without announcement and sat down on the floor between the niches, which made an Astartes in armour look roughly like an anvil that someone had set down in a nursery, and he said: "Ask."

They asked nothing. For one minute.

"And the others?" Eskil asked.

Es steht in unserem Gründungsprotokoll und es steht dort, weil ein Mann namens Kessler vor achttausend Jahren die Rechnung aufgemacht hat und feststellte, dass sie anders nicht aufgeht."

"We are eight hundred. Eight hundred warriors on a world of four million people and a forest that grows over every path we cut into it. If tomorrow all eight hundred of us fall, the Chapter is not dead. If tomorrow the villages disappear, it is." Ossmar spoke without emphasis, as though reading out something self-evident. "The trunks are the Chapter. That is not a saying for feast days. It stands in our founding protocol, and it stands there because a man named Kessler drew up the reckoning eight thousand years ago and found that it does not come out any other way."

„Und die Zurückgegebenen?", sagte Eskil.

"And the Returned?" said Eskil.

"Are the part of the Chapter that has children," said Ossmar. "You think we send back the unfit. We send back the ones we need there. After a year here, a fifteen-year-old can build a windbreak in eighteen minutes, knows which hollow has gas, can cauterise a wound and settle a quarrel without anyone drawing an axe. We set him back in his village, and in twenty years that village has twice as many children who live long enough to stand at the Counting." A pause. "They do not know that. We do not tell them."

„Warum nicht?"

"Why not?"

"It is cruel, and it has held for eight thousand years, and I know no third way, and if you ever find one, Eskil of Nine Springs, then bring it to me." He went to the door. "And if you do not find one, tell no one about this. Least of all your brother."

VIII. Die, die heimgehenThose Who Go Home

Im fünften Monat ließ Bruder Ossmar die verbliebenen einundzwanzig antreten und führte sie in einen Hof, den sie noch nie gesehen hatten.

In the fifth month Brother Ossmar had the remaining twenty-one fall in and led them into a courtyard they had never seen before.

Dort standen zweihundertsechzig.

Two hundred and sixty stood there.

Es waren die Gestrichenen. Nicht die vom letzten Monat — alle. Alle, die seit dem Tor gegangen waren, in fünf Monaten, aus dreihundertsiebenundachtzig. Sie waren nicht weggeschafft worden. They were the struck. Not those of the last month — all of them. All who had gone since the gate, in five months, out of three hundred and eighty-seven. They had not been taken away. They had been in the mountain the whole time, three levels lower, in a part the aspirants did not enter, and there for five months they had been learning something else.

Eskil erkannte Gesichter. Eskil recognised faces. The fastest, who had vanished on the ninth day, stood in the second rank and had a scar over the back of his hand that looked like a cauterised wound someone had tended himself. Four ranks further stood a girl who had wept at night in the third month, and she stood straight and held a rolled-up map under her arm.

Brannt war nicht dabei.

Brannt was not among them.

„Ihr seht sie einmal", sagte Ossmar zu den einundzwanzig, „damit ihr aufhört, euch etwas Falsches vorzustellen. Sie gehen morgen. "You see them once," Ossmar said to the twenty-one, "so that you stop imagining something false. They leave tomorrow. Each of them brings three things to his village: a map of his valley more exact than anything that has ever existed there; the ability to treat a wound that before would have led to death; and a calendar with the date of the next Counting in it."

Er ließ sie hinsehen.

He let them look.

"They will not say that they have it from us. They will say that they learned it on the way, or say nothing at all. Their villages will take them for failures, and they will allow it, and in forty years the child mortality in their valleys will be half what it is today, and no one will know why."

IX. Der Schacht ohne LichtThe Shaft Without Light

The last trial was the easiest to describe and the only one Eskil later remembered only in fragments.

One went into a shaft. The shaft was vertical, sixty metres, with iron rungs, and at the bottom was a chamber, and in the chamber there was nothing. No light, no water, no sound but one's own. One stayed until one was fetched. One did not know how long that would be. One had no means of measuring it.

Three days in which no one made them run, no one counted them, no one taught them anything. They were given food, as much as they wanted, for the first time in seven months, and most of them were made ill by it. They were given hot water. They were given a room with a window.

You will not want that, and it does not go away."

"And because he is needed in the village and I am not. That is why I am here and he is not. That is the division. If I overturn it now because he is my brother, then the whole division was never a division at all, but only a thing that happened to the others."

Ossmar sagte nichts.

Ossmar said nothing.

Of eleven, five or six will not complete the twenty-one days. I tell you this because you should know it, and because every one of you who imagines it otherwise makes my work harder afterwards."

"And I shall not look it up," said Delvar, "and you will not ask me to. Because I would not be permitted to tell you if I knew, and because you would then think of nothing else for twenty-one days, and because in twenty-one days I need you and not what is left of you when you think."

What happened in those twenty-one days no one could have recounted, least of all the one to whom it happened.

There are records. Apothecary Delvar kept them, as he kept everything, in a cramped, very straight hand, and the entry for Niche Seven is seventeen lines long and contains values that mean nothing to a layman: pulse spread, temperature curve, the number of convulsions in hours eighteen to forty, a note on the night of the eleventh day that the patient had spoken, and after it, because Delvar held it worth mentioning, the word that had been spoken.

On the ninth day two died in the same hour, and on the twelfth one, and on the fifteenth one.

A body that does not accept a second heart does not fight against it. It negotiates for two weeks with a stranger in its own chest, and at some point it breaks off the negotiation, and then it is quiet.

On the eighteenth day Brother Ossmar walked through the room. He did that every evening. He did not mean it as comfort: they were not conscious, and comfort was not provided for in any case. He did it because he was the Master of Aspirants and because one looks at the things one stands behind.

He stopped at Niche Seven and looked for a long time.

"Because he recited one of whom he does not know whether he is dead," he said. "All the others recite the certain ones. The certain ones cost nothing. He took one where the reckoning stays open, and he bore it open, with his hands in the coals." He turned to go. "If this Chapter needs one thing, it is brothers who can bear something open. We have enough who like balanced accounts."

The open hearth stood at the north wall, to the left of the great one, and it was a shallow hollow of four stones with a floor of tamped ash. There was no wood in it. There had been no wood in it for forty years.

One laid no wood on an open hearth. One only kept it clean, so that the one it stood open for, if he came, would find nothing he need be ashamed of.

Sie richtete sich auf. Sie war zweiundfünfzig und sah aus wie sechzig, weil man auf Varanthos so aussah, und sie hatte in ihrem Leben einen Bruder und einen Mann und jetzt einen Sohn an den Wald gegeben und stand aufrecht in ihrer Küche.

She straightened up. She was fifty-two and looked sixty, because on Varanthos one looked like that, and she had in her life given a brother and a husband and now a son to the forest and stood upright in her kitchen.

„Ich habe deinem Onkel ein Bündel gepackt", sagte sie. „Ich war zwölf. Ich habe zu viel hineingetan, ich wusste es nicht besser, und ich habe vierzig Jahre lang gedacht, dass er deswegen nicht angekommen ist." Sie hängte den Besen an den Haken. „Bei Eskil habe ich zu wenig hineingetan. Und jetzt denke ich, dass er deswegen nicht angekommen ist. Es ist immer dasselbe. Man findet den Grund, weil man einen braucht."

"I packed your uncle a bundle," she said. "I was twelve. I put too much in it, I did not know better, and for forty years I have thought that this was why he did not arrive." She hung the broom on its hook. "With Eskil I put too little in. And now I think that this is why he did not arrive. It is always the same. One finds the reason, because one needs one."

Draußen stand der Wald, dreihundert Meter hoch, und behielt, was er behielt, und gab zurück, was er zurückgab, und tat beides ohne jede Absicht, und die Menschen von Varanthos hatten sich vor sechshundert Generationen entschieden, das eine Gnade zu nennen, weil ihnen kein besseres Wort eingefallen war.

Outside stood the forest, three hundred metres high, and kept what it kept, and gave back what it gave back, and did both without any intention, and the people of Varanthos had decided six hundred generations ago to call that a mercy, because no better word had occurred to them.

Er schrieb sie ohne Kommentar, weil ein Kommentar an dieser Stelle nichts genützt hätte, und weil in einundzwanzig Tagen niemand etwas weiß, und weil in vierzig Jahren vielleicht ein Mann in dunkelgrüner Rüstung durch ein Dorf im Westen gehen und die Hand in ein Feuer legen würde, und vielleicht auch nicht.

He wrote it without comment, because a comment would have been of no use at that point, and because in twenty-one days no one knows anything, and because in forty years perhaps a man in dark green armour would walk through a village in the west and lay his hand in a fire, and perhaps not.

Der Herd blieb offen.

The hearth stayed open.

Sie sind alle offen. Das ist die Sache mit Varanthos, die kein Fremder versteht: In jedem Haus ist einer. Vier Millionen Menschen halten achthundert Krieger, und dazwischen liegen dreihundert Jahre Warten pro Familie, und niemand hat je jemandem gesagt, dass das ein Preis ist.

They are all open. That is the thing about Varanthos that no stranger understands: in every house there is one. Four million people keep eight hundred warriors, and between them lie three hundred years of waiting per family, and no one has ever told anyone that this is a price.

They only call it the second stone and sweep it out in the summer.

Halvard aß auf und stellte den Napf ins Wasser und ging wieder hinaus, weil das Holz nicht gespalten war und weil es niemanden gab, der es sonst gespalten hätte.

Halvard finished eating and put the bowl in the water and went out again, because the wood was not split and because there was no one else who would have split it.

Am Abend, als es dunkel wurde, kam er noch einmal herein, blieb in der Tür stehen und sagte in den Raum hinein, ohne jemanden anzusehen: „Wenn er es wird, dann hat er den Wegstein nicht gesehen, und wenn er es nicht wird, dann sieht er ihn irgendwann von der anderen Seite. Beides ist auszuhalten."

In the evening, when it grew dark, he came in once more, stopped in the doorway and said into the room, without looking at anyone: "If he becomes it, then he has not seen the waystone, and if he does not become it, then one day he sees it from the other side. Both are bearable."

Ranna sagte nichts.

Ranna said nothing.

She swept it out again the next summer, and the one after, and the one after that.
